the rise of the samurai before the edo period the people of japan had an emperor who ruled japan in kyoto the emperor was treated like god the emperor and the government were ve badly organized in the 12th century the emperor was losing his power in japan people in japan did not obey the emperor any more and people did not give taxes to the government the emperor and his army and the government became so weak that the emperor could not control any crime japan was filled with robbers all of the rich landowners needed a lot of protection and the landowners began to recruit for their own protection the landowner s armies were called samurai samurai means the one who serves they had to completely loyal to there lords the samurai were so good that the emperor wanted the samurais to be his private army the best samurai had so much power that they had the chance to become powerful lord themselves the samurai leaders got into groups to become rival clans the gempei war was in 1180 and ended in 1185 so the war was for 5 years the leader of the samurai was called yoritomo and they gave him the name shogun shogun means commander in chief shogun was the head leader of the samurai warlords shogun was leader of japan for 7 centuries but the emperor was still officially in charge by sofia 3

the farmers the second biggest group of people in edo were the farmers the farmers grew rice for edo farmers had no time to relax because everyday they had to work even if they were tired when the weather was bad their jobs were more difficult this job was very hard that not only one person from the family had to be a farmer the whole family had to be a farmer so it was hard for the family to be a farmer in winter farmers had to wear a cloak made of straw and a bamboo hat by sofia 4

craftsmen as more people come to live in the city of edo the craftsmen s job became more useful people who wanted to be craftsmen had to leave their families and be an apprentice which means that instead of them living with their families they lived with a master to learn their skills of craftsmen if the master gets old someone else takes his place and then he will be the new master the coopers live in a certain area and the smiths lived in a different area and each area had their master different craftsman had different jobs and that s why they lived in different places by sofia 5

merc the merchants the lowest positions of jobs in edo were the merchants the merchants did not make useful items for people to buy but the merchants had a very important role for setting up shops the government made a rule for the merchants that they were not supposed to wear silk expensive clothing the merchants had a way of working out to count bills they used abacus to count and add up bills the mitsui family were the most powerful merchants they had a shop called echigoya and it was the largest store they had the idea of making goods at permanent prices they sold materials cut the way that the customer wanted by sofia 6
