from the president dear alumni family and friends n june 4th 301 seniors celebrated their graduation with family and friends at the cathedral of mary our queen bishop denis madden presided over the baccalaureate mass while michael lemon and robert walker offered valedictory and salutatory addresses respectively you can view michael s speech on the homepage of calvert hall s website 99 of the class are college bound and have been accepted into prestigious schools including the art institute of chicago bucknell carnegie mellon catholic duke emory fordham howard johns hopkins la salle loyola manhattan marquette maryland mica nyu notre dame penn pitt rpi savannah college of art and design syracuse tulane villanova wake forest usna and uva we are very grateful to the class of 2011 for their various contributions and wish them well in their future endeavors the classes of 1951 and 1961 recently commemorated their special jubilees it was impressive to witness their fidelity camaraderie and enthusiasm several alums spoke proudly of the generations of family members who also call themselves hallmen and are excited to have grandsons and other relatives entering calvert hall in september looking back on the last fifty years on our towson campus the school has advanced significantly since our days at cathedral and mulberry streets we continue to cherish our distinctive lasallian heritage and the considerable contributions made by our alumni the 50th anniversary gala provided an opportunity to reflect and celebrate and to also speculate about calvert hall s bright future i would like to share my appreciation to the many supporters of the 2010-11 hall fund the hall fund calvert hall s annual fund provides the resources necessary to sustain calvert hall s exceptional faculty outstanding programs and provide financial support to qualified families it is through your assistance that calvert hall is able to provide an excellent educational environment in the tradition of st john baptist de la salle as you enjoy all that these summer months have to offer know plans are well underway for the 2011 homecoming the turkey bowl game and many other exciting activities more details are forthcoming prayerful best wishes to you and your family st john baptist de la salle pray for us live jesus in our hearts forever sincerely o br thomas zoppo fsc president

c ov erfe at u r e calvert hall announces answer the call a $10 million capital campaign brother thomas zoppo fsc announced the school s current capital campaign answer the call during calvert hall s 50th year in towson gala on may 14 2011 the community has been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the school s move from cathedral and mulberry streets in downtown baltimore to its present day campus at 8102 la salle road in towson throughout 2010-11 answer the call is a $10 million campaign to fund renovations to keelty hall the school s main administrative and academic building and increase the endowment for tuition assistance and faculty development mr francis x kelly iii 82 chief executive officer kelly associates the success of calvert hall is due to the generous benefactors who believe in the mission of st john baptist de la salle and the christian brothers mr kelly said i am grateful to calvert hall for the education that my brothers sons nephews and i have received dr smyth added calvert hall has a compelling mission and exposes young men to the widest and finest array of educational and extracurricular opportunities offered anywhere in baltimore guided by a caring and committed faculty every young man has a chance to succeed as a parent i could not find a better educational value anywhere during the silent phase of the campaign 319 donors committed $7,803,867 toward the $10 million goal as the 50th year in towson celebrations culminate for calvert hall we thank the many alumni faculty and staff parents friends and corporate foundations gifts toward `answer the call brother thomas said this campaign will allow calvert hall to enhance its mission of educating men of intellect men of faith and men of integrity insurance group inc kelly associates financial services inc kelly integral solutions llc and dr thomas b smyth sr 77 partner/vice president chesapeake urology associates are the co-chairmen of the campaign thecardi na l summer 2011 3

institutional advancement calvert hall featured in ncea publication calvert hall college high school uses anniversary to reflect on the importance of the school and to create increased awareness an article written by doug heidrick 89 director of communications was featured in the february/march 2011 edition of momentum the magazine is published by the national catholic educational association the hall fund exceeds $1.2 million mark on behalf of the christian brothers faculty/staff and students at calvert hall thank you for helping us exceed our goal by over $300,000 gifts to the hall fund provide the resources necessary to sustain calvert hall s exceptional faculty and outstanding programs from state-of-the-art technology to teacher salaries to maintaining our campus annual gifts provide a flexible resource to fill a variety of basic school needs the hall fund has assisted sustaining the tuition assistance program which supports over 40 of students who rely on financial aid thank you for your continued support of the hall thanks for your support of calvert hall members of the class of 1958 and the class of 1961 recently gathered at calvert hall to present brother thomas zoppo fsc president with generous donations to help current hallmen with tuition assistance parents from the 2011 jv baseball made a donation to the brother tom miller 65 fund which was created by chris bengel 83 admissions director and jv baseball coach following br tom s death on march 24 2008 in the last four seasons over $20,000 has been raised for the fund by the baseball team and the men of calvert hall who established the brother tom miller 5k run/walk www.calverthall.com/giving 4 w w w .c a lv e rt hall c o m

student news school news miles for montana c alvert hall has built a relationship with the de la salle blackfeet school a middle school run by the christian brothers on the blackfeet reservation in browning mt each year calvert hall sends stu presentations on blackfeet spirituality and economics and learn about the issues the reservation faces in terms of poverty abuse and alcoholism seven seniors in the lasallian spiritually and service elective course with mr christopher barczak 93 organized miles for montana a race-foreducation fundraiser to benefit the blackfeet school over 120 faculty /staff and students participated and raised $3,627 to help purchase gym uniforms and textbooks dents and teachers to the reservation to tutor at the school learn about life in the 21st century for the blackfeet tribe see catholic charities honors sophomore class students take the plunge students participated in the polar bear plunge s frigid friday cool schools challenge at sandy point state park on january 28 2011 the challenge kicks off the 15th annual plungefest an event sponsored by the maryland state police to benefit special olympics maryland the calvert hall community raised over $4,200 the sophomore class received the anne lindsey otenasek youth service award from catholic charities of baltimore during an evening with catholic charities on april 5 2011 the award is presented to high school students in recognition of outstanding volunteer service with catholic charities in memory of ms otenasek a passenger on pan american flight 103 it honors the spirit that was the hallmark of ms otenasek s volunteer work at gallagher services thecardi na l summer 2011 5

school news cardinals work with bso calvert hall has partnered with the baltimore symphony s orchkids program since november 2010 by sending upper classmen to lockermanbundy elementary school to volunteer as tutors and mentors each tuesday after school under baltimore symphony orchestra music director marin alsop s leadership and direction the bso offers this education initiative to provide social and learning opportunities for baltimore city youth march madness has special meaning at calvert hall it s academic wins two titles it s academic won the 2010-11 catholic academic league with a 9-1 record and also won the baltimore academic league the roster included 26 students and was led by tom hartka president john bennett matt bressler bryant jacob paul lashier alex wilson and john young calvert hall joined jim valvano s team to show your spirit in the fight against cancer by wearing gear from their favorite college teams during the 2011 ncaa men s college basketball tournament over $1,100 was collected and donated to the v foundation for cancer research valvano former north carolina state basketball coach and award-winning broadcaster recruited friends and family to lead the foundation in his quest to eradicate the disease that ultimately claimed his life students spend weekend immersed in baltimore during the weekend of march 18-20 2011 mr john nagib campus ministry accompanied 18 students on baltimmersion the urban project a service immersion trip to baltimore city the students spent friday night at the beans and bread resource center sponsored by st vincent de paul of baltimore and served meals on saturday morning the weekend also included presentations on poverty and homelessness opportunities for one-on-one interaction with people who are materially poor or experiencing homelessness and time for prayer reflection and discussion 6 w w w .c a lv e rt hall c o m

school news congratulations class of 2011 o n june 4 2011 at the cathedral of mary our queen the class of 2011 became the 50th class to graduate from calvert hall since the school moved to its current campus in towson in september 1960 the 301 graduates join a network of over 16,000 alumni and are challenged with continuing the legacy of men of intellect faith and integrity auxiliary bishop denis j madden was the celebrant michael lemon was the class valedictorian robert walker was the salutatorian and john bennett won the prestigious brad meagher award included in the senior class were ben curtis justin fratantuono rip goodman stevie johnson and chris sutton who joined calvert hall for their senior year following the closing of cardinal gibbons high school we congratulate them and all the graduates best of luck and continued success facts about the class of 2011 · 99 of the senior class are college bound · 363 scholarships awarded to the graduates · over $12 million in merit scholarships · 2 military academy acceptances · 27 student-athletes continuing their careers in college · 60 students recognized by the maryland distinguished scholars program · 106 seniors took 221 ap exams · over 12,000 community service hours completed in the last 4 years · 16 eagle scouts · 46 graduates have fathers who are also graduates · 85 were involved in activities in the last 4 years thecardi na l summer 2011 7

faculty &staff news in the br kevin strong receives award b r kevin strong fsc past president of calvert hall and current guidance counselor received the brother carl shonk distinguished faculty award from the board of directors of the immaculata-la salle high school alumni association at their 2011 hall of fame induction dinner in miami fl on may 7 2011 in the early 1960s br kevin joined the founding brothers of la salle high school in miami at immaculata-la salle he taught thousands of cuban refugee children and is remembered affectionately by many alumni as our first english teacher in america elisabeth mueller mathematics department will participate in dena s young lasallian workshop in washington dc july 24-28 2011 verena brown computer science became a member of loyola university maryland s honorary math society pi mu epsilon and was the keynote speaker at an induction ceremony on april 4 2011 she spoke about the changes in mathematics and computer science education over the years as part of a grant awarded to purchase robotics equipment for calvert hall mrs brown and senior benjamin lelonek presented a poster session on applying robotics in the java programming classroom at the maryland society for educational technology conference held at the baltimore convention center on april 12 2011 brian ecton director of bands received the birney sabbatical grant and will use the grant which is awarded annually to one faculty member for the purpose of professional and educational development to attend the band director academy through the jazz at lincoln center in new york june 24-27 2011 thomas fan social studies was selected as calvert hall s recipient of the archdiocese of baltimore s teaching excellence award which recognizes candidates who have distinguished themselves as exemplary teachers truly committed to the witness of christian teaching david culotta 02 associate director of instrumental music ear ned a master of business administration with a concentration in finance from loyola university maryland in january 2011 eileen giordano language department earned a master of arts in leadership in teaching from college of notre dame of maryland in may 2011 and caitlin lynch-huggins religion department earned a master of science in counseling psychology from loyola university maryland in may 2011 brother thomas zoppo fsc president and louis eckerl athletic director were inducted into baltimore s boys of summer hall of fame in april 2011 the non-profit association which donates proceeds to charitable organizations was formed to provide for the continued promotion of fraternalism good fellowship and sportsmanship through amateur and professional baseball for more information or to become a member please contact paul dipino sr 55 at 410 302-1246 or mriegger@verizon.net 8 w w w .c a lv e rt hall c o m

student news paul lashier university of delaware andrew mills university of maryland christopher procopio university of richmond and christopher sutton duke university were recognized as calvert hall s distinctive scholars at the archdiocese of baltimore s 19th annual distinctive scholars convocation on april 14 2011 baltimore county executive kevin kamenetz recognized seniors michael bell christian grier jacob kring and d sean williams-brown for winning the don t drive distracted 3d project psa contest the r adams cowley shock trauma center maryland state department of education maryland highway safety foundation and wbal-tv 11 sponsored the competition in order to pro 2011 best of the independent schools art competition winners for the 2011 best of the independent schools art competition were announced on april 2 2011 in the landow gallery at landon high school in bethesda md the winners were selected from 88 finalists with 180 entries submitted in sculpture photography drawing painting and mixed media the competition now in its fifth year is sponsored by the landon fathers club and is organized by landon art teacher walt bartman painting first place jack keller honorable mention james kuhn sculpture second place christian bernier drawing third place haengsoo lee duce a video to be made into a public service announcement for the campaign jb batinelli dan binette todd buttner hayden nugent and mr marc parisi campus ministry attended the rally and march for life in washington dc on januar y 24 2011 the event included a rally with popular catholic recording artists and mass celebrated by donald cardinal wuerl archbishop of washington the band and choral music departments received high ratings at the baltimore county solo and ensemble festival at dumbarton middle school on february 19 2011 the saxophone ensemble and the brass ensemble under the direction of mr nicholas marini and the string ensemble under the 9 thecardi na l summer 2011

student news sutton 11 involved with mentoring program at northrop grumman christopher sutton 11 participates in worthy worthwhile to help highschool youth a mentoring program with northrop grumman electronic systems that offers a unique opportunity and a valuable resource to high-school students driven to make a difference worthy encourages and advances mentees pursuit of technical degrees by providing hands-on experiences and improving access to postsecondary education once a month chris visits the facility to work with mentors on a yearlong engineering project in 2010 he designed a 3d model of an ergonomic backpack that was comfortable functional and included a built-in ipod remote to control music chris gathered data on the areas of pain people felt from carrying backpacks and on the features people would like in their backpacks from the data he concluded the pain was due to improper positioning of the backpack or the design of the backpack his 3d model on google sketchup had s shaped gel straps for better distribution of weight over the shoulders an aluminum frame for back support and an ipod remote for functionality this year chris who will attend duke university in the fall is working on a project to better understand blood flow through the heart and lungs in order to construct an artificial heart © bill mcallen direction of mr david culotta 02 received superior ratings in all categories and an overall rating of superior to qualify for the maryland state solo ensemble festival in may 2011 under the direction of mr george wilkerson jr students from the solo vocal music class received excellent ratings for their solos and the madrigal singers received an overall superior rating as an ensemble choral music also had very successful performances at the maryland music educators association s district 7 choral music festival march 911 2011 the concert choir for beginning singers received an excellent rating at their level and a superior score in sight-reading the chamber singers a new group at calvert hall this year and the hallmen who were participating in the festival for just the second time each received an overall superior rating to advance to the mmea state choral festival on april 29 2011 both groups improved upon their scores from districts as the chamber singers received an overall superior rating and the hallmen received straight superior scores in all performance and sight-reading categories junior ben weise was selected as a 2011 carson scholar and received a $1,000 college scholarship award during the carson scholars fund 15th annual awards banquet on april 10 2011 all 29 students who took the 2011 national spanish examinations received recognition including thomas gruebl spanish iii and brian healy spanish iv who earned gold medals fifteen students received silver medals 5 received bronze and 7 were honorable mention junior patrick mcquay a member of the carroll county 4h club sonic super sparks attended the 2011 vex robotics world championship a gathering of top robotics teams from around the world at disney world in orlando fl the event included top teams from over 200 vex robotics competition tournaments from may 2010 to march 2011 10 w w w .c a lv e rt hall c o m

student news patrick s team which won the teamwork and excellence awards was one of over 400 high school teams who received invitations the team also attended the emc world conference in las vegas nv in early may 2011 senior robert frevel received a certificate from the maryland council for economic education and a legislative citation from the maryland general assembly for placing first in the northern division of the stock market game with investments that gained over $24,000 for the ten week competition junior matt dragonette won the national society of the colonial dames of america essay contest and will attend the 2011 congressional seminar in washington d.c june 18-24 junior azariah coppin placed 1st in dramatic interpretation at the national forensic league district championship to qualify for the national forensic league tournament in dallas tx he was also the baltimore catholic league champion for oral interpretation and finished 2nd in dramatic interpretation and 6th in duo interpretation with classmate matt anderson both qualified for the national catholic tournament in washington dc senior justin gough received the eagle of the cross award from archbishop edwin o brien during a ceremony at the catholic center on june 1 2011 the award recognizes students who best exemplify apostolic action moral integrity and christian leadership the team of sean creel dan gonzales curtis hughey and paul lashier finished 3rd out of 52 teams at the central md physics olympics john stetka 13 was concerned about the traffic and the safety of drivers at the intersection of la salle road and putty hill avenue in december 2010 he decided to make a difference and sent a letter to baltimore county traffic and engineering asking them to install a left turn arrow from putty hill onto la salle to make the turn safer for drivers coming to school every day after receiving the letter baltimore county studied the intersection and agreed to traffic changes due to the high traffic volume and safety issues the traffic signal changed in march 2011 making the turn safer for all drivers matthew berger herbert grueninger iv cody jenkins justin liberatore christopher patrick matthew schuele joannes valkenberg and julian zuzarte were recognized as mock trial all stars dan moorhead placed 1st and nick fleming was 3rd in the ancient order of hibernians essay contest mr robert brandell mathematics department and seniors ben gross kevin hagin sean tracey and junior kevin needer attended the ieee power and energy society s dinner and tour at the national electronics museum on february 24 2011 the evening also included presentations about bge s smart-grid technology robotics competitions and engineering programs for high school students at johns hopkins university central maryland history day results senior paper first place daniel mattheiss second place henry vido senior individual documentary first place mark marciszewski second place akeem henry senior individual performance first place phillip swanson senior group documentary first place calum briggs r.c burton andrew dobson daniel gonzalez second place daniel fetcho steven gercken tanner lamberti aiden oates ben schiavone thecardi na l summer 2011 11

student news rugby continues to build program in miaa varsity rugby lost to mt st joseph 29-24 in the miaa a conference championship match while the jv and f/s teams won miaa titles in 2011 during the season the cardinals hosted london st george from canada and traveled to harrisburg pa to play in a night contest against west shore rfc seniors donnie carroll joe desnoyer nick dipietro alex derito colin pribula bradley rockstroh juniors sean haynie joe maranto sophomore chris rothmann dan smith and freshman nick auvil were selected to represent the miaa as pru select side all-stars calvert hall rugby alumni chris difatta 09 and tony maranto 10 joined kenny ames 79 sean rogers 81 and head coach tom fan social studies department on the coaching staff this season football team travels to annapolis the varsity football team which won the 2010 miaa a conference championship and finished the season ranked #1 in the state of maryland visited the maryland general assembly at the state house in annapolis on april 5 2011 the visit was sponsored by senator james n mathias jr legislative district 38 somerset wicomico worcester counties a 1969 graduate of calvert hall the team was escorted to reserved seats in the senate gallery viewed the legislative session which included recognition of their season and toured the historic rooms and chambers of the state house the team received the a paul menton award from the greater baltimore chapter of the national football foundation and college hall of fame senior andrew mills was honored at the chapter s scholar athlete awards dinner and classmate michael wade was calvert hall s representative at the mccormick unsung heroes awards banquet 71st celebration of unselfish team play turkey bowl update due to a ravens home game at m&t bank stadium on thanksgiving this season the 2011 turkey bowl will be played at unitas stadium at towson unviersity at 10am on thanksgiving thursday november 24 2011 lights added to crispino and russo stadiums following the success of night football and soccer games in the fall of 2010 permanent lights have been added to paul angelo russo and carlo crispino stadiums the lights for russo stadium were donated by the alumni association while a donation from john t carey 76 covered the cost of lights for crispino stadium the first night games under the new lights for each stadium will be played during the 2011-12 school year 12 w w w .c a lv e rt hall c o m
