lady elizabeth 6th form christmas ball over one hundred students and members of staff had a fantastic night at the 6th form christmas ball held at the marriott hotel in denia the ball has become an annual event which is organised by the head pupils and a fabulous way to end the term it gives the opportunity for the 6th formers to relax for the night and momentarily forget the looming examination period and all the pressures of their a levels senior school newsletter december 2011 this issue 6th form christmas ball presenta on of cer ficates golfing talent p 1 p 2 p.2 emaus run p 3 p 4 p 4 p 5 p 6 christmas fayre christmas cake compe on tex les sociales and x-mas cards from around the world leo s silly sports day and ci zenship x-mas card compe on gcse ict and p 7 year 13 business studies les alumni natasha woodhams and maria durá p 8 as always the standard of dress was superb with every student going to great lengths to make the event one to remember they looked like they had stepped straight from the pages of a top celebrity magazine crystal goudie and daniel mcmenemy were voted best dressed and danielle williams and pj wickman were crowned king and queen of the ball a new award was introduced this year which was titled `the greatest transformation and this was won by josh ablitt congratulations to the head pupils for organising a great night which was enjoyed by everyone p.1

presenta on of cer ficates ceremony the presentation of certificates ceremony held on monday 12 december was an opportunity to recognise the wonderful achievements of students during the summer examination period our school choir opened the ceremony with songs from the rock nativity mr wijeratne gave a brief over-view of the results which have been heralded as some of the best ever and parents students and teachers were delighted to share this information natasha lakin pictured left with mr wijeratne was awarded the prize for the best gcse results for 2011 natasha received a parker pen for her fabulous efforts which included 9 as at gcse level and one a at as level natasha also gained an a for spanish in the previous year so in total 10 a s gcse and one a level at as level congratulations natasha the presentation of certificates ceremony was also the opportunity to present the outstanding cambridge learner awards to jordan byman ­ highest mark in spain for cambridge intenational as level english language sabina dewfield lohoar ­ taught privately by dr morris ­ highest mark in spain for a level literature in english adele somers ­ highest mark in spain for cambridge international as level business studies and danielle feesey ­ highest mark in spain for high achievement in cambridge igcse food and nutrition congratulations to all of these students for their commitment and dedication to studies golfing talent year 8 student paul pugsley and year 11 student maxim beard have risen to new heights in golf in the last few weeks twelve year old paul has been in fantastic form recently and in november won two out of his four tournaments whilst coming second in the other two his great run began at oliva nova in the first week of november where he was playing in an open tournament and finished a credible second place in very difficult and windy conditions the following weekend he played at his home course la sella in a members competition to celebrate the club s 15th anniversary on this occasion he won the junior category with 37 stableford points on november 19 and 20 paul and maxim travelled to villitania benidorm to compete in the spanish federation open doubles championship on the first day they scored a net 65 and on the second day a net 69 placing them in joint second place for the tournament paul s final competition for the month took place in the last week of november in oliva nova an open unicef tournament where paul once again scored 37 stableford points earning him the title paul is now playing off a handicap of 8 his fellow playing partners both adults and juniors always comment on paul s wonderful attitude both on and off the course his lovely demeanour and his great sportsmanship he also demonstrates all of these attributes at school and is a well-respected pupil among his peers and the staff well done paul maxim is an extremely talented sportsman in many different fields he is playing off a handicap of 5.9 in golf which is amazing considering he only has time to play golf on the weekends and does not have any time to practice he also plays football to a high level is a very good athlete and is currently busy with his gcse studies he has done very well in many golf tournaments in the past however he is very modest when it comes to talking about his achievements congratulations to both boys for their determination and efforts!

emaus fun run espite the cold over three hundred students and several members of staff participated in a run to raise money for local charity emaus this event which is always held on the last day of term is very popular with the students as they are eager to raise money for children and elderly people who are in d need of clothing food and shelter over 600 euros was raised which mrs carol saunders representative from emaus was delighted with as christmas is a difficult time of year for the children from the organisation and any extra money to make the festive period more special is greatly appreciated their a level practical course work and vicente ivars was first home followed closely by lucas manzanares socrates lozano pons was the winner for key stage 3 with jordan castle taking line honours in the combined key stage 4 and 6th form group year 8 student nora sondresen ran extremely well to be the first female to finish for key stage 3 and nicola williams was the first female to complete the run in the key stage 4 and 6th form group santa claus max butcher finished a very credible fourth congratulations to all students and staff who participated and to mrs lovell for organising accompanied by two members of staff were first to start the event a very special thank you to all as they were completing a 7 kilometre course around members of staff who stood in the freezing cold jalón and then into llíber finishing with every other directing traffic and marshalling the runners competitor this timed run for some of the participants was part of a group of 6th form students and some gcse pe students,

christmas fayre the annual christmas fayre at the senior school was as always a great success students and staff worked extremely hard to prepare the different stalls and activities that ran throughout the afternoon from christmas treats to fortune-telling nail painting to a donut eating competition there was something for everyone to enjoy and plenty of prizes to be won the choir treated the audience to christmas carols and christmas songs creating a festive atmosphere groups of other students also got together and entertained the crowd with christmas themed performances which included an excellent christmas melody from a group of year 8 girls and a very amusing christmas wrap song performed by polly cohen and harry mold it was wonderful to see so many of our senior school parents along with pupils and parents from the junior school and members of the local community enjoying the fayre we would like to thank all who attended and supported the fayre all proceeds over 2 300 euros will go to the combined school charities christmas cake competition the christmas cake entries in this year s christmas cake competition were of the usual high standard making the judging extremely difficult for mrs baker and mrs armstrong year 7 students were required to decorate a chocolate log year 8 students made and decorated a christmas pudding and year 9 had the choice of making a santa cake or a snowman cake years 10 11 and the 6th form were free to design and make a cake of their choice and there were some very creative entries well done to all participants for their efforts and congratulations to the winners of each category!

year 8 textiles weird wild wonderful and crazy creature project many thanks are due to trich penny who gave a very generous gift of rug wool to the school this coupled with one of spain s major artists joan miró inspired the making of three-dimensional fantasy figures created with wool and a wide variety of other materials such as feathers beads buttons threads ribbons etc the students made sketches from miró s constellation series developing their ideas experimenting with plaits pom-poms tassels to build a cast of characters with poetic titles such as star in the shadow of the moon fantastical family tree pink angel medusa etc the pupils worked with excitement and enthusiasm saying it was fun and imaginative allowing them to be playful and creative the results are currently displayed in the window and on the walls of the textile room and are a very colourful and eye-catching addition to the corridor mrs b cayley year 9 sociales classes during first term students from the year 9 sociales classes have been studying the middle ages for the topic of the romanesque period they had to find information on the different aspects including romanesque architecture particularly in churches cathedrals and monasteries paintings and the artists sculptures and the people and religion of the period once they had compiled the information they transposed and transformed all their research into two giant books the results were excellent and can be viewed on the school website under `latest press releases by way of an e-book sra soler and sra ferri christmas from around the world co-ordinator of tutor group activities mrs armstrong asked the year 7 and year 8 students to design christmas cards with greetings from their country of origin she was overwhelmed with the response and subsequently made a beautiful display board using the cards with christmas messages in the following languages spanish valenciano english german french italian norwegian russian and dutch pictured are four of the students who participated in the activity veronika murga arlette schuur marcelle schuur and victoria murga.

leo s silly sports day the leo s silly sports day was a fun afternoon of entertaining activities to encourage students to support the leo s club in raising funds for local and international charities the afternoon was organised and run by the joint presidents of the the throw the target leos karis goodwill polly cohen and janneke feenstra other 6th formers also assisted throughout the afternoon with events including an obstacle course sack races dodge ball a bush tucker trial balloon volleyball and a bouncy castle everyone enjoyed participating in the various activities and it was a welcome and fun change to regular classes over 130 euros was raised and will be donated to a local charity which supports homeless children well done to the leos especially to the presidents for their continued effort and hard work to help people in need year 9 citizenship deforestation in the amazon rain forest they typed and laminated question cards and instructions and made imaginative counters and pictures the results were excellent and the students all enjoyed assessing the work of each group by participating in the different games they had created the winners of the competition were eloise burns liberty glister and milly mitchell well done girls they discovered why deforestation has taken place in brazil and researched sustainable solutions they looked at the effects of all global issues and interdependence of our countries to consolidate their understanding of these issues mrs post and mrs cornwall organised a `board game competition in class and at home groups of 3 4 students created a 3d board game about the global issue of i n term 1 year 9 citizenship students studied and researched the effects of deforestation in the amazon rain forests.

winners of the ict christmas card compe on the winners of the ict christmas card competition are listed below once again the quality of the entries were excellent and each year sees an improvement in the student s technological skills congratulations to the winners year 7 1st susana ferrer 2nd jennifer dibley 3rd niko nalbantoglu year 9 1st liberty glister 2nd eloise burns 3rd sissi yi hu year 8 1st poppy stone 2nd natalia alexander 3rd paul pugsley year 10 1st claire broadley 2nd lena martini 3rd felipe ribes year 9 christmas card competition year 8 year 11 1st jo jo meylaerts 2nd alex burns year 7 get up get moving tudents in year 10 ict gcse are working on the issue of fitness this topic get up get moving is part of their gcse project the work being carried out now is to make a spreadsheet used to calculate the bmi of a person taking into account the physical activities they do every week and the diet they follow the result is a customized program for a s specific person of a specific age height weight etc to conclude this part of the project students have to create a poster to promote healthy eating sr altamira head of ict department year 13 business studies as part of the business studies syllabus which covers new product development the year 13 students are required to work in teams to make a mock-up/prototype of a new communication or transport basedproduct using a range of different scrap materials which are provided by the caretaker this challenge has an environmental angle in terms of using scrap materials and the idea is that the students try to think about how companies manage the product development process from market research through brainstorming ideas exploring the pros and cons of each solution assessing the features and benefits of the different options before making a decision on which product to develop and eventually launch on the market the activity allows the pupils to develop additional skills of creativity initiative teamwork and communication as ultimately each team is required to present their product to the rest of the class.

les alumni natasha woodhams youngest female golf professional in spain completed my gcse examinations in june 2011 and in july 2011 started working at el plantió in alicante with my wgtf world golf teachers federation qualified golf coach mr noel eastwell initially i was there just to observe lessons and get the feel for what it was like to be a coach i was also working on my own game as i have only been playing for just under two years and i thought that taking my wgtf exams would be absolutely out of the question that i was not ready for them at all however the president of the organisation encouraged me to take them saying that i was ready and that my game was great so on november 5 2011 i took my world golf teaching federation exams to become a professional golf teacher the week was so intense and i felt under immense pressure mentally with all of the things that i had to learn despite this i passed my exams and was told that i was the youngest female professional in spain and the youngest member of the wgtf in the whole world for me this was an amazing achievement one that many youngsters my own age could only dream about attaining i know that i couldn t have done it without the support of my mum and dad and of course my coach noel now i am concentrating on improving my game and working on achieving my final goal which is to go on tour as a golf professional in january 2013 i will attend tour school in la manga where i will hopefully get my `q card which allows me to play on the professional circuit natasha woodhams i maria durá ballester the american university washington d.c hello mrs wickman i m doing great over here it s starting to get chilly and rainy but apart from that it s all good finals are closer everyday but i m actually glad because i am soooooo excited to go back home and see everyone i ll come into school with my brother one of the last days because i get back on the 18th anyway i m actually doing a double major of business language and culture blc and international business the blc major is like business management combined with a language and a year abroad in the country of that language i m probably going to go to germany in my junior year how is everything over there how is the sixth form getting on i have attached a photo of me like you asked i hope everything is great over there and a bit hello to everyone from me best maria durá ballester
