to stand by and watch as winnings of a$1.14 million suddenly slipped out of his hands on the flipside driefontein=s connections headed by star thoroughbreds denise martin who put together the partnership went absolutely crazy the new winning connections who were in the paddock not to mention the large group of supporters lining the rail shouted cheered and chanted for a long time afterward truth be told i felt pretty bad for nick vass to go from that high to that low has to be crushing in fact he came by to commiserate with a few people nearby and looked absolutely gutted i must admit however he handled the whole thing with such class and grace that in my books he gets the award for sportsmanship getting an honorable mention is gai waterhouse who respectfully hung back away from all of her clients as the new winners cheered wildly i=m told that normally she would be in the thick of the celebration but on this occasion she opted for a more subdued approach that display of good judgment is just one of the reasons why she is so highly respected and continues to be one of australia=s greatest racing ambassadors one of the most unfortunate occurrences of the day was the tote after the race jon freyer team arrowfield walked over to the irish contingent team coolmore and while i was curiously awaiting the exchange it consisted of only a polite and respectful banter it made me realize that despite all the plots and subplots inherently involved in the leadup running and aftermath of every race contested anywhere in the world people understand the basis of this game you might be the winner today but you can just also be the loser tomorrow so you better make sure not to kick anybody when they=re down because you=re turn is invariably right around the corner after the races the crowd streamed over to the magic millions sales grounds which is conveniently located just across the street from the racecourse in my opinion that convenience creates an atmosphere like of nothing i have ever experienced before by the time the sale got under way a little after 6 p.m a crush of bodies some standing some walking many stumbling and most drinking jammed the grounds let me tell you the mix of people was something to see women and men dressed to the nines were haphazardly tossed in with folks wearing t-shirts shorts and flip flops on the grounds one could see the old the young and everything in between i found myself highly amused when i happened to chance upon a very welldressed woman fascintor high heels and all-languishing on the ground nearest the barns while chatting nonchalantly on the phone and drinking beer from a bottle nice truthfully i can=t even use the word >electric to describe the feel in the air because it doesn=t even begin to describe the mood accurately maybe the more appropriate word is >volcanic despite all the hoopla the auctioneers went on with their business and lo and behold the horses got sold i guess you can say that it=s not their first rodeo a quick follow up to a note earlier in the week i had mentioned channel 9 s personality and farm owner anthony mithen had a few horses in th sale and after four of six sold thus far i am happy to report and so is he that each one was sold for a profit of about 30 also happy with its results magic millions is pretty pleased that despite a sluggish first day the sale picked up from day 2 onward and overall numbers appear to be up over 2011 in this day and age that=s very good newsfor any sales company and hopefully the sale can maintain its momentum until the very end cont p9
