our next stop was to learn how to clean and use wool before we went in we sat on benches outside while we waited we saw a huge black and white ox with a long tail it was looking at us after a few minutes we went into a small white cottage to learn about wool there was a fire burning in the fireplace to keep us warm there was also a wheel colored yarn hanging on the wall baskets small tables and benches to sit on while we warmed up by the fire everyone got a small piece of wool that came from the sheep at philipsburg manor they get sheared during the spring time because the weather gets warmer and they no longer need such a heavy coat the babies don t get sheared because they don t have a thick coat yet when the wool is sheared it is very dirty and needs to be washed.

the next step is to pick the wool apart to remove more of the dirt after that we put the cleaned wool on different cards that had metal teeth on them we had to rake the wool over the teeth the last step was to use two cards to comb it once the wool was ready we carefully removed it from the cards it was ready to be spun into thread to make it strong using the wheel is much easier than doing it by hand that job would be done by a girl who was 10 11 or 12 years old before we left everyone was allowed to keep a small piece of wool from the sheep!

our next stop was to meet the farmer we talked about pets and how we take care of them he talked about the purpose of having animals on a farm animals provide food and clothing for people to use this cow s name is mabel she gave birth to a calf that is with her at philipsburg manor and gets milked each day the milk can be used to drink or make butter or cheese when the cow has no more milk it would then be eaten and its thick skin could be used to make blankets clothes or shoes while we were talking about animals mabel surprised us by going to the bathroom!

everyone had a chance to brush the cow with a special brush it had 3 circles inside of one another we were told not to brush near mabel s head or her tail to stay safe it was okay to brush as hard as we wanted because she has very thick skin using the tools to brush her helps to remove some of her thick winter skin brushing too lightly can tickle we kept on hearing roosters yelling cock-a-doodle-doo while we were talking about the animals there were chickens and roosters walking all around there was also a fat cat walking around.
