organisation · as in every school within the locality following regeneration in the area some children are taught in mixed year group classes however the adult to child ratio at wybourn community primary is still higher than average all our staff are able to maintain a purposeful and orderly working environment through the provision of a good quality curriculum appropriate to the ability of each child class teachers are supported by extra staff so it is common to find two adults working in the classroom parents are encouraged to join our classes to support their children s learning whenever possible this received much praise in our inspection report of 2007 wybourn school is very proud of the quality of support for pupils who have special needs including those who are gifted talented we have a highly experienced inclusion team who target intervention strategies to groups of children who need specific input the school places great store in providing an especially welcoming and supportive environment for pupils and parents at nursery and reception age a transition member of staff is employed to make beginning school an exciting and stress free experience for families recent improvements have enhanced our exclusive outdoor play area for under 5 s we have a policy of setting appropriate homework for children of all ages pupils are encouraged to read every day at home with their parent/carer as we find that when this happens it is reflected in children s progress in some cases teachers may suggest other activities for parents to help their child with learning at home · · · · · wybourn learning community currently accommodates pupils from 0 to 10 years of age the primary school has an admissions limit of 45 per year group and within the children s centre we can accommodate 16 places 0-3 childcare 16 places foundation 1 childcare and 78 places foundation 1 the expected population for the year 2009-2010 is 300 approx the building which was opened in 1928 as an infant junior and secondary school has had a number of internal improvements in recent years the facilities are of a very good standard and include a well fitted gymnasium hall ict suite and library parents wishing to look around the school before enrolling their children-can make an appointment by either ringing or visiting the school office learning for today tomorrow and life 6

curriculum policy the school aims to enable the children in its care to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their five every child matters outcomes · stay healthy · making a positive contribution · enjoy and achieve · economic well-being · being safe this will be achieved through an appropriate broad balanced and creative and practically based curriculum to entitle our pupils to the benefits of · fully inclusive good quality learning experiences whatever gender race culture ability or disability · a stimulating varied and enjoyable learning environment enabling each child to make the best possible progress working in close partnership with parents local community and other support agencies · respect of self and others in order to produce a happy and orderly school community the curriculum · wybourn school curriculum is operated within the national curriculum framework and foundation stage framework based on the philosophy that we are involved in developing the whole child with the introduction of `every child matters there remains a strong emphasis on the basic skills of maths science and english however there is an equally strong emphasis on the social development and enrichment of each child pupils are taught in mixed ability classes under the guidance of a class teacher at times children may work in smaller groups being taught by other members of staff learning from first hand experience plays an important part in the curriculum and so we plan a number of educational visits during the year on occasions parents may be called upon to make a donation towards the costs of visits but this will always be kept to an absolute minimum classes now follow creative half-termly themes which link areas of the curriculum providing meaningful and more relevant learning opportunities for pupils parents/carers are made aware of themes through class newsletters this school adopts a fully inclusive policy the needs of individuals and their capabilities will be considered and catered for within the school as far as possible in order to ensure optimum achievement and progression the curriculum will provide a wide range of educational experiences which will be common to all pupils but which will vary according to individual ability needs and development the curriculum will fully comply with the entitlement subjects as set by national legislation re will comply with the sheffield agreed syllabus · · · · learning for today tomorrow and life 7

curriculum content and summary foundation stage our reception classes continue to build upon the strong start provided in wybourn children s centre and other local providers developing basic numeracy and literacy skills alongside a strong emphasis on personal and social development children will also be involved in creative activities and opportunities to extend their `knowledge and understanding of the world through geography history design technology information technology and religious education the curriculum is taught through practical activities visits and structured play as young children learn through real experiences the outside reception play area encourages pupils physical development as well as other areas of their learning we encourage children to take home reading books and key words to work with their families for five minutes every day children are assessed against the early learning goals before moving on to national curriculum levels ofsted 2007 have stated that children have a very good start to their education in our school years 1 2 children work on all subjects covered by the national curriculum at this age we believe children learn through exploration and creative play can have a positive impact on this process close links are maintained with parents and carers and adults often work alongside their children on early morning activities children will get the chance to go on a residential visit to whirlow farm children are encouraged to take reading activities home every night if this does not happen please ask your child s teacher during year 2 pupils participate in a teacher assessment process statutory assessment tasks sats the results are given to parents in a written report at the end of the school year years 3 4 as children enter key stage 2 the focus is on increased independence pupils are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their own learning and increase their confidence in working alone some work is carried out in pairs or groups and children with special educational needs will often receive extra support teachers provide children with a relevant and meaningful curriculum which is creative and exciting for them children will continue to follow the national literacy and numeracy frameworks working at a level which is appropriate to them themes will be covered on a two year rolling programme to eliminate repetition during the year pupils will also have the opportunity to go swimming as part of the pe curriculum learning for today tomorrow and life 8

years 5 6 in these years we expect pupils to become independent learners and take further responsibility for their actions by considering consequences many have jobs to do extending their role as leaders of the school towards the end of y6 children take part in statutory assessment tasks sats these are formal tests marked externally booster sessions and other strategies are used to support children in their sats revision attendance at these sessions is most important in addition pupils have the opportunity to expand their experience by participating in educational visits which provide learning opportunities and bring the curriculum alive a y6 residential has run for several years and has been very successful this develops the children s personal social and teamwork skills during year 5 pupils will also have the opportunity to go swimming as part of the pe curriculum in year 6 pupils are using their skills of being independent learners to extend themselves in preparation for the transition to secondary education several transition activities are introduced which carry through into secondary schools across the city curriculum areas english through the provision of the literacy learning opportunities we aim to provide an environment in which children can develop and communicate through the four modes of language reading writing speaking and listening we have a wide range of books available for children to read both in school and at home including ict based materials parents/carers can purchase book bags from school it is important for parents to be supportive enabling their child to make progress in reading children are taught both to read and understand books from a variety of different styles and for different purposes we encourage pupils to form opinions and be able to discuss what they have read writing opportunities are closely linked both with work children have done in reading and other subjects across the curriculum children are helped to develop a writing style that is both joined and legible we also encourage children to develop their writing for a range of different purposes we have placed an increasing emphasis on speaking and listening this is developed through weekly speaking and listening assemblies in which all children are given an opportunity to participate pupils are also encouraged to respond to others using more detail as they progress through school children are assessed throughout school to give a clear picture of their progress those children needing extra support will have access to a range of different strategies the school is currently running to enable children to make the best progress possible learning for today tomorrow and life 9

mathematics mathematics is a core curriculum subject that covers the understanding and application of a wide variety of skills concepts and experiences children are encouraged to learn through a variety of practical and problem-solving approaches in number shape space measures and handling data children are developing a wide range of mental and oral approaches to all aspects of mathematics and are encouraged to apply this across the curriculum in real-life situations and also for fun we encourage pupils to work at home with parent carers on basic mathematical skills e.g times tables science science is organised to provide a range of experience including practical experimentation posing and testing ideas and organising fair tests the aim is to provide the opportunity to develop a knowledge and a progressively deeper understanding of science the national curriculum is delivered under the headings of life processes and living things materials and their properties and physical processes they are governed by the ideas of experimental and investigative science the work is related at all times to pupils knowledge and experience information communication and technology ict in today s world we see the teaching of ict as an integral part of the school curriculum to facilitate this we have a purpose designed computer suite the school is connected to broadband and fully networked all classrooms have interactive whiteboards and pcs to enhance children s learning religious education children are encouraged to develop attitudes of tolerance understanding and sensitivity towards different beliefs they gain knowledge and understanding of christianity and other major world religions through the use of stories discussion art ict and drama a scheme of work has been written for the school which ensures continuity and progression in the area of religious education the policy adopted within school is to `teach not `preach parents requiring more information about the re syllabus should contact the head teacher learning for today tomorrow and life 10

collective worship/assembly there are daily assemblies which include an act of christian worship in line with national requirements regular visitors from local christian organisations lead whole school assemblies in addition to whole school assemblies children take part in key stage affirmation assemblies singing assemblies and class assemblies with a pshe theme families can choose not to participate in the christian element of these assemblies physical education each child participates in two hours of pe each week work in pe covers the national curriculum strands of gymnastics dance games athletics outdoor adventurous activities and swimming dress code for pe for all pupils indoor activities plain dark shorts white t-shirt bare feet or plimsolls outdoor activities as above and jumper or tracksuit plimsolls or trainers no jewellery is to be worn for pe this includes earrings parents who wish to have their children s ears pierced are encouraged to do this at the start of the summer holidays to allow six weeks healing time the swimming pool policy does not allow any jewellery to be worn during swimming lessons either music music is taught by a specialist music teacher across the whole school at key stage1 pupils will regularly listen to and join in with music of many kinds as well as songs and music which relate to theme work group work with instruments and voice will cover ideas such a loud and quiet fast and slow at key stage 2 pupils do more detailed work about the appreciation and content of music they will examine rhythm and explore forms of writing music there will be opportunities for group composition and performance quality of singing and performance will always be emphasised the ability to make judgements about music will be encouraged and developed learning for today tomorrow and life 11

personal social health citizenship education pshce health education is taught through various science topics across the whole school the school welcomes relevant speakers during `healthy week each year each class has a timetabled pshce seal social and emotional aspects of learning session every week here children are encouraged to take part in circle time or discuss other personal social health and citizenship education issues sex education is discussed in context for appropriate ages parents are invited to preview any materials that may be used during these sessions and will be notified before projects begin at wybourn community primary school we aim to develop the `whole child other subjects following the cross-curricular themed approach other subjects design technology geography history art are incorporated within relevant meaningful and creative halftermly project themes in line with national curriculum programmes of study from 2009 all primary schools have had to include the teaching one hour a week of a modern foreign language mfl at wybourn community primary school we have offered this exciting curriculum opportunity ahead of schedule spanish and french being taught across the junior year groups following a structured programme learning for today tomorrow and life 12

assessment at the end of year 2 and year 6 children will do sats standard assessment tasks and the results will be given to parents in the end of year report the year 2 sats include an element of teacher assessment the y6 sats are marked externally at the end of years 3 4 and 5 children will complete qca tests similar to sats formal assessment of children s progress will be made according to the national curriculum level descriptors nc subw 1c 1b 1a 2c 2b 2a 3c 3b 3a 4c 4b levels year group r y1 y2 y3 y4 y5 y6 expectatio ns at wybourn community primary school assessment is a process that moves forward children s learning by identifying areas for improvement and strengths teachers assess on an ongoing basis in each lesson feedback to children may be given verbally or through developmental marking comments in books helping children to realise the next steps they need to take to further their understanding when appropriate pupils will be involved in their own assessment process reception children are assessed against the early learning goals assessment results are closely monitored and targets are set for improvement suitable intervention strategies are implemented where appropriate special educational needs at wybourn school we are strongly committed to equal opportunities we aim to give children the chance to achieve their full potential because of this the support of children with special educational needs takes a high priority in the school in addition our gifted talented children also receive support through a wide range of activities organised by our gifted talented co-ordinator we believe that all children are entitled to a first class education and we endeavour to provide this the school follows guidelines in operating a staged approach to the support of children with special educational needs at the first stage a member of staff may register an initial note of concern and their teacher then monitors the child at school action it has been noted that the child requires additional support the school provides this at school action plus the child will receive support from an agency outside of the school in a few cases the local education authority may assess a child and a statement of special educational needs may be written at all stages of the sen process targets are set for the child and these are shared by teachers parents children and other members of staff who are involved we aim to involve parents as fully as possible in the sen process through the planning and sharing of targets we have a dedicated inclusion team headed by our inclusion officer julie pinto learning for today tomorrow and life 13

attendance · · attendance and punctuality are a high priority at wybourn community primary school if a child is absent from school for any reason parents should inform their class teacher so they do not receive an unauthorised absence mark taking holidays in term time causes problems children miss out on valuable learning experiences and some find it difficult to catch up the head teacher will only authorise two weeks holiday in term time in one school year however if there have been concerns about a child s low attendance then the head teacher will not authorise the holiday at all holiday forms can be collected from class teachers parent/carers could possibly face fines for unauthorised absences due to taking holidays at the beginning of the school year during sats week and in excess of two weeks punctuality is very important so children can take full advantage of the curriculum and not interrupt the learning of others by arriving late registers close at 9.20am children attending after this time are given a late absent mark · · behaviour policy it is expected that 1 everyone will treat others as they would like to treated themselves 2 everyone will work hard and allow others to learn 3 everyone will look after the school and all the things in it 4 everyone will work together to solve problems and make a better school · all partners connected with school must understand and agree to the behaviour policy including parents pupils staff we aim to ensure that all pupils are self disciplined independent learners with positive attitudes towards themselves other people and the school in general children are encouraged to behave positively using a `green card reward system children earn green cards by working hard and adopting good attitudes if a child earns 10 or more green cards a token prize is awarded in a celebration assembly children who do not achieve expectations enter a system of sanctions white card initial concern yellow card cause for concern red card serious concern when these cards are issue the child spends a short time-out in another class the card must be signed and returned by a parent/carer if a red card is issued an emergency meeting will be convened involving parent pupil behaviour intervention worker and a member of the senior management team records of these cards are kept and remain on file a similar record is also kept of issues which arise at lunchtimes · · · · learning for today tomorrow and life 14

some children may work with mrs worsnop the school learning mentor behaviour mrs worsnop s role is to support children who are experiencing difficulties with their behaviour either in class or at lunch times children will set a target together with mrs worsnop and this will be monitored regularly in rare circumstances it may be necessary to seclude or exclude pupils from the core education provision parents will be informed at every stage of this process school uniform following a consultation with parents we adopt a school uniform which governors have approved as compulsory dress for school pupils must wear · a red royal blue or white polo shirt with the school logo · or a plain white polo shirt · a red royal blue or black sweatshirt fleece cardigan with the school logo · plain dark trousers or skirt dark blue black or grey no stripes or logos · black shoes or trainers · red and blue gingham dresses can be worn by girls in the summer months uniform is available to buy from mrs mckenna on monday wednesday and friday from 3:00pm in the ict suite parents are asked to mark all items of clothing clearly with the child s name standard procedure is that schools are not liable for damage or loss of property lost property is taken care of by mrs mckenna items will be kept for one term and then unclaimed property will be donated to local charities children can attend school in `non-uniform clothes on their birthday if their birthday falls at the weekend or in a holiday they may have their `non-uniform day on the first day back jewellery policy · the greatest concern for our pupils is their safety and well-being jewellery can often pose a problem to safety during playtimes swimming and physical activity for this reason all pupils are asked to remove all items of jewellery when staff feel this is necessary for example pe swimming dance and drama a small pair of stud earrings can be worn for most other lessons in school pupils are allowed to wear a watch one plain ring sleeper or stud earrings no other jewellery is allowed the school accepts no responsibility for the safety of these items of jewellery parents are asked to allow children to have their ears pierced during the summer holidays only · learning for today tomorrow and life 15
