security and the olympic games the events of september 11th in the united states have prompted the international olympic committee ioc to undertake a thorough review of the security plans for the 2002 olympic winter games in salt lake city the ioc and the international winter sports federations have pledged to fully cooperate with american authorities and the salt lake organizing committee so that all participants including qualified athletes may attend and perform their olympic function at the games the international winter sports federations unanimously supported the ioc s position that next year s winter games will go on as scheduled february 8 to 24 they reiterated the important role of the olympic games in conveying olympic values of peace universality and respect of each other mitt romney president and ceo of the salt lake organizing committee says the olympics are all about courage the games represent the greatest qualities of the human spirit including world peace the message of the olympics is even more important today than before we are making the necessary efforts to ensure that the games are safe and that the olympic message is preserved for the vancouver whistler 2010 bid corporation security is also an important issue the ioc wants to see detailed security plans from all potential host communities as part of their official bids for the olympic winter games and paralympic games bid book themes when the international olympic committee ioc evaluates the bids for the 2010 olympic winter games it will be looking for detailed plans on a wide range of themes that deal with components of hosting a successful games this vital work creates a foundation for the development of the vancouver whistler 2010 bid the ioc will be looking for detailed logistical plans showing our capacity to host the winter games and paralympic games says 2010 board chair marion lay the bid corporation is working on 18 themes that deal with issues such as · the attributes of vancouver whistler british columbia and canada and our ability to host the winter games · determining the venues that will give athletes the chance to achieve their best performance · ensuring the games have a minimal impact on the physical environment · accommodation plans for olympic athletes coaches officials spectators media and volunteers · health and medical services along with public security measures · transportation plans within the greater vancouver and whistler regions work groups consisting of technical experts and sport and community representatives have been established to develop the details surrounding each theme 2010 games applicants make their first submissions to the ioc in the summer of 2002 athletes give 2002 winter games vote of confidence the ioc athletes commission has confirmed its confidence in the salt lake organizing committee for its efforts to stage the 2002 olympic winter games a recent statement issued by the commission said the practice of sport is a human right it is essential that the athletes of the world who meet the qualification criteria and who have trained hard for several years have the right to participate in the olympic games the olympic counsel of asia oca also issued a statement to the ioc saying it had total confidence in the precautionary security measures being undertaken by the ioc the salt lake organizing committee the state of utah and the federal government of the usa prior to the 2002 winter games 2 vancouver whistler 2010 bid news
