olympic winter games to tromsø -a realistic possibility tromsø wishes to host the olympic winter games this idea was launched in may 2003 when the municipality of tromsø announced this ambition the national process and work involved have since taken place within the sporting and national political bodies so far the work has on the whole been successful however the goal had to be changed from 2014 to 2018 along the way the project is now stronger than it has been for a long time and it looks like the decision at the ioc congress in 2011 may well be tromsø however the national voting process has to be undergone first and we re aware that this is extremely difficult together we shall create a trailblazing celebration of sports and give the world a moment of arctic magic

unique the warm arctic city the city of tromsø and its surrounding environment will provide a wonderful framework for the most spectacular compact winter games ever its modern infrastructure and well-functioning knowledgeable city society are available for international attention and sports at the highest level tromsø s coastline and proximity to major marine resources with huge mountains as its nearest neighbours provide irresistible contrasts tromsø is extremely accessible by sea or air the large ice-free harbour is one of its advantages as are two airports within the core area snow ice and coldness are a few of tromsø s distinctive characteristics tromsø is a winter city and proud of it it is perfect for hosting the world s biggest winter sports event in the winter sports nation of norway.

enchanting weather and light despite its location far north of the arctic circle in a sub-arctic zone tromsø has a unique climate compared to corresponding areas in siberia and alaska no other city on the same latitude has the opportunity to arrange the olympic winter games there is a lot of weather in the north and many weather phenomena are of great interest to the rest of the world the northern lights aurora borealis and midnight sun are the most important of these the time between the sun not being visible from 21 november to 21 january and tromsø having lighting that any stage lighter would envy is short light measurements have documented that the winter games in tromsø in 2018 can start on friday 23 february and have 8 1/2 hours of daylight the length of daylight will thereafter increase to almost 11 hours by the end of the games on 11 march.
