learner analysis peachtree city elementary is located in the suburbs of atlanta georgia peachtree city elementary is forty years old and it is the oldest school in fayette county the mission of peachtree city is to foster the development of the whole child through a supportive caring and challenging learning environment the average median income for residents of fayette county where peachtree city is located is about $78,000 both the county and city are considered to be areas of high socio-economic status peachtree city elementary has a combination of students from different socio-economic backgrounds i have students in my class that live in everything from rented apartments to purchased homes worth over half a million dollars peachtree city elementary is one of the most diverse schools in the county the enrollment is approximately 436 students with an average class size of 17.3 students in pre-k to fifth grade according to the school improvement plan the ethnic makeup of the school is sixty-eight percent caucasian percent african american eight percent hispanic twelve percent asian and four percent multi-racial about twelve percent of the student population receives free or reduced lunch the focus i chose for my collection assignment is habitats more specifically i am focused on georgia s regions and habitats the study of habitats is located under the strand of life science several grades address standards related to plants and animals however habitats of plants and animals are primarily covered once this is covered through the georgia performance standards in third grade there are four third grade classes to teach the 69 students that are enrolled for school at peachtree city elementary all of the classrooms are heterogeneously grouped classes it will be necessary to have access to materials at all ability levels some of the students

consumables related to the purchase the textbooks series is new and should directly correspond to the new gps curriculum standards students would not be enthusiastic about only reading textbooks and listening to me teach from the books all day third grade teachers are striving to find other reading materials and resources to help teach the subject matter we would like to be able to do mini research projects make mini-books research animals for sorting projects and coordinate read alouds that integrate curriculum strategies the standards will be listed below in full but any other references made to the standards will be shortened all materials needed for the library are aimed at addressing these curriculum standards in the best possible way s3l1 grade 3 description s3l1 students will investigate the habitats of different organisms and the dependence of organisms on their habitat elements a differentiate between habitats of georgia mountains marsh/swamp coast piedmont atlantic ocean and the organisms that live there b identify features of green plants that allow them to live and thrive in different regions of georgia c identify features of animals that allow them to live and thrive in different regions of georgia d explain what will happen to an organism if the habitat is changed s3l2 students will recognize the effects of pollution and humans on the environment a explain the effects of pollution such as littering to the habitats of plants and animals b identify ways to protect the environment · conservation of resources · recycling of materials in order to complete an evaluation that is good enough to stand the test of time i decided to review the current collection first the library has approximately twelve thousand five hundred books this results in about 25 items per student based upon a title wise and bound to stay bound collection analysis there is an average of about 1,543 items in the natural sciences collection the average printed

date is about 1995 with the specific item total for life science plants and animals materials being about 1,000 the life science s section makes up about one percent of the total library collection when assessing the collection through the opac destiny system about 76 items directly related to habitats this included both print and non-print items collection evaluation another way to evaluate the collection and decide what additional resources to add was to review the current collection of materials hands on i went through the current non-fiction resources on habitats by hand to see what was already available to students and teachers all of the items were in good condition the librarian stated that this was one of the sections she and the parapro weeded last year since there were only seventy-six items listed in the opac system it only took two days for me to put my eyes on all of the items the one thing i discovered was that many of the items were about individual animals or plants you had to read to find the small amount of information on the topic of habitats i located only five items with the name habitat in the title i then looked for specific habitat names the list is printed below to reflect my findings please note that i did the search via destiny which is our opac system some of the reflected numbers include the same materials under different headings an example would be the 2 wetland books that also showed up under the swamps category all numbers reflect items of all types and not just books my focus for the collection review was specifically for habitats in georgia those would be mountains wetlands marsh swamps oceans coastal and georgia s piedmont region habitat you can observe that there were no books specifically on georgia s habitats the piedmont region habitat or the coastal plains region habitat.

asking why i had them lined up on the whiteboard many of them were asking because i put them up there the morning i was starting the habitat unit this really stimulated their prior knowledge and interest in the subject the interesting information i found was that students do not seem to be using this area very much most of the titles have only been checked out one to two times this year the only book checked out more than thrice was the magic school bus on the ocean floor it has been checked out five times this year but not in the same format a book about mountains was checked out three times in order to gain input about what items would be helpful to teach habitats i sought the insight of other third grade teachers we discussed what the county provided versus what we felt we needed to do an effective job of teaching habitats to our students we decided on the following information 1 not enough printed books were available for checkout from the nonfiction section there were only enough books for one class to enjoy at a time however we tend to teach units at the same time 2 no information is available for teaching about the regions of ga most of the information is obtained from searching the web 3 no guided reading sets available for small group reading related to habitats and regions of georgia 4 we have two videos available about habitats neither one is just about the habitats in georgia and neither covers all of the habitats in georgia 5 we do not have e-books available on any topic 6 magazine selections are slim and not really helpful in teaching about habitats we only have mailbox magazines to use in the library.

7 we have a large selection of fiction books about animals that live in different habitats as their setting however the collection needs to be updated with books from the last five years one of the other surveys i did was with students from third grade i wanted them to think about what types of materials they feel we need in the library most of the surveys covered the same general genres and areas not very many students requested more non-fiction books they mainly wanted more junie b jones wimpy kids a to z mysteries and magic tree house books the only requested nonfiction books were about languages fun activities like karate and ancient treasures they all related with something the student had studied recently or do as an extra-curricular activity i asked them to specifically address whether they thought we needed more non-fiction books and if they thought we needed more to be specific on topics they felt were missing i did receive three responses out of sixty that said we need more books about dogs twelve students stated we need more books about reptiles specifically snakes finally i had two students that stated we could use more books about horses they both ride horses for fun none of them mentioned that we needed more books about animals and where they live based upon information obtained from the three other teachers our primary goals were reviewed and established by the county we need to be able to do the following tasks listed in the chart below i did not include art materials or other materials we don t normally find within the confines of the library we have an extensive array of materials for science investigations we do not have many hands-on materials like animals and plants but most other items are provided in the kits there is not much available that can help teachers teach habitats hands-on most of it would need to be read about or viewed on a video the teachers and schools can order habitats of georgia

boxes through the georgia museum of natural history it is a loan program and consideration will be made on whether we should invest in this for the library for the year students will be able to locate and label different regional habitats on a map of georgia research organisms from different georgia habitats and record their findings using drawings surveys and observations needed resources black line maps and video about regions and habitats books audio and video on different habitats this would be a good time to make ebooks available for students video recordings of how to gather information would be nice apply communication skills to write a report about an organism from research online or computer program that allows students to write a report about their organism create a mural diagram diorama etc of a habitat in georgia including the organisms that live there books audio or video about habitats would be helpful to help students visually represent their habitats

chart similarities differences and patterns of organisms living throughout the various georgia habitats support claims with facts and sources of how changes in a habitat affect the organisms that live there classify animals and plants based upon their primary habitat in georgia timeline software books and video for research on organisms in georgia s habitats powerpoints books audio video and webquests would be good for completing this assignment posters picture books and videos would be great for helping to classify plants and animals in georgia habitats based upon the standards to be covered and the resources available to teach the standards related to habitats i have created a prioritized list to follow for my collection plan 1 locate as many ebooks printed books audios and videos as possible to teach about regions in georgia 2 secure books audio video and magazines about separate habitats related to life in georgia these would include books about mountains the piedmont coastal marsh swamps and ocean habitats 3 purchase any books audio video magazines and teacher guided reading sets as possible on different animals based upon where they live in georgia.
