chapter one bang alice donna-rose radke tried to get her mother s death out of her head it had been years ago but ali could still see and smell the blood at night she had been moved from family to family until last year at the age of fourteen she ran away from the last foster parent and found herself at a farm the farm was old and looked like it was abandoned she was surprised to find a girl that parents died and now lived with her grandfather hannah joe harper had to share a room with ali one reason was that there were only two bedrooms in the small house the other reason was that hannah was a light sleeper so it was easy to calm ali from her fears hannah might be a year younger but grandfather said that age didn t matter get up grandfather yelled across the house making it harder to fall back asleep no hannah yelled back oh come on we need to find a good hiding place before grandfather announces class alice moved over to hannah pulling the covers from her head fine but i am only moving to skip the lesson in u.s history soon both girls were out of bed and in their work clothes it was going to be a long morning to hide from grandfather it was his farm so he obviously must know all the hiding spots hannah took ali into the barn it was small but the attic was filled with hay that was easy to hide in the hay was itchy to their skin but they didn t complain they barely even breathed when they heard someone s footsteps come into the barn there was some moving of tools from down below hannah dared to lift her head up just a little to find that grandfather was grabbing a box and moving it outside he then came back in and said get out of the hay and play in the box i have no time to talk about learning to people that don t listen alice was surprised that he knew exactly where they were hiding she also felt guilty on how bitter grandfather s words came out she wanted him to know that she did listen but she couldn t see why it was so important to know the past she had spent so many days and hours trying to forget about hers hannah was the first one to get into the box she didn t care because she was so tired of everyone wanting her to be perfect that is why she got out of the car seconds before it was destroyed by the train her family was so transfixed on that their baby should be perfect that they didn t even notice the train alice grew impatient standing by hannah while she was lost in thought so she finally asked don t you think that we are a little too old to be playing in a box

hannah shook her head and pulled ali into it they were laughing so hard that they couldn t feel the box move they couldn t feel being moved in time when they were finally catching their breath they realized that something was wrong ali stepped out of the box with her blonde hair in a bun she was wearing a blue long sleeve dress and shoes that were attached to her feet hannah had her long blonde hair in a ponytail she was wearing a long sleeve shirt with a vest over top she was wearing baggy pants that only went to her knees she had on long white socks that covered the rest of her legs her shoes also were on her feet but seemed to have a little more room where are we hannah stuttered adjusting her eyes to the sun there is no electronics this place looks new or old you get what i mean alice looked at the horse and buggy bring dirty men into what looked like a bar we got to go back hannah replied turning around only to find a piece of paper what happened to the box don t look at me i have no idea alice went over to grab the paper with shaking hands she opened it up she was surprised to see grandfather s handwriting she had to read it repeatedly to make it finally make sense then she handed it to hannah who saw the words as one big blur the letter said welcome to the year of 1731 girls what does this mean hannah whispered i think we have traveled back in time chapter two hannah and ali walked around the road trying to make sense of things it didn t make sense that a cardboard box could make them travel in time maybe they were just dreaming they thought that that was it it was just a scary dream that was the only thought that could calm them could we sit my feet are killing me alice sat in the grass i m sorry i will give you five minutes to complain hannah sighed alice went on about how her dress was so tight that it was hard to breath she talked about how it was dumb that they were here she went on about complaining that it was hannah s fault that she got into the box then alice apologized and got up and started walking her five minutes were up and she had to be a big girl and suck it up.

they had made it to a town and watched as all these people went running around something big must have happened but all the girls wanted was a cool drink and a comfy chair hey why thou budge a man yelled shoving hannah to the side sorry i just want to get over there hannah pointed to the bar on the other side of the man what is the line for alice asked wondering what the big deal was thy waiting in line for book of enlightenment the man talked like it was utterly ridiculous that they didn t know what is that hannah yawned thy book is about science and natural laws of the universe the man now had the book in his hand the man then took the book and gave it to the girls he told them to read and understand what the value of new york was about which wasn t clear to the girls but they nodded and moved into the bar they asked for tea while ali read and tried to translate it back to hannah who was scratching the itches formed from the wool she was wearing i don t understand the book alice whispered flipping through the pages that doesn t matter we need to find a place to sleep and the cardboard box hannah whispered back one of the men that worked there gave them the tea and asked are thy new yes alice took a sip and tried not to spit it out since it was gross thou can sit hannah questioned herself if she said that right but the man was to busy pulling up a chair to notice thy hear about the great awakening he asked studying them the girls shook their head so the man went on for years thy forgot about religion then thou preachers went around talking about god thy realized that he should respect god just like everyone else in the beginning didn t the colonies get split by religion alice tried to remember what grandfather had said so many days before the man nodded and talked about how things were different you could believe in what they wanted no matter where they were then he talked about how he is now a preacher the curiosity from the girls was so strong that they finally asked him what his name was he responded with jonathan edwards sinners in the hands of an angry god he demonstrated his work your famous in our town hannah fixed her mistake not wanting to ruin the future.

why thank you with that the man was gone soon the girls were walking again to find a place to stay they had learned quickly that hannah must pretend that she is a boy which wasn t that hard the also pretended that they were a couple that came up from virginia they found a farm outside of town by a mile and would work for a place to stay they then decided to ask the two sons that the family had everything they knew before anyone else got suspicious well the king isn t following the magna carta the youngest son started the whaty what hannah said giving the pigs some food you never heard of the magna carta the oldest boy chuckled the girls shook their head ready for the answer the magna carta is a document on how the king isn t above the law and gave the citizens political and civil liberties king charles ii is not following this the youngest boy spoke monotoned like he was reading this out of a book i even heard he was going to send some soldiers over here the oldest boy grabbed the bucket in hannah s hand and put it in the barn i am tired how about you ali stated before hannah could even answer she was being pulled up to the house they grabbed some blankets and headed for the guest room ali was in front of her the whole way hannah had barely made the bed when alice had her head buried in it alice tried to hold the tears how could she be homesick she didn t like the smell or the small house what could she possibly miss i sure wish we could have contact with grandfather hannah sighed yes thats what ali missed she missed when his strong arms were around her telling her that everything was all right she wished this nightmare would be over with she wanted to go home she felt sorry for these people but she was from the future their lives were completely different do you need time to yourself hannah asked wishing the answer was no she couldn t be by herself in this world alice was the nice one that everyone liked hannah was just the one to get in fights no let s just go to bed tomorrow will be another day alice was hoping it was home in her warm bed besides this cold and itchy one this bed feels like hay bails it probably is now go to bed

the morning brought in sunlight that was bright to hannah s eyes when her eyes adjust she realizes that she is all alone gasping of shock she tried to move her legs they were in a cramped position and were being very stubborn she wasn t in the guest bedroom she wasn t in her house she was standing on cliffs how she got there she didn t know are you okay a soldier asked her where are we again she asked afraid of the answer we are in the french and indian war we are on the cliffs of quebec i am british general james wolfe our mission is to take down the french do you understand he bitterly whispered yes but i really could have used that we are on the cliffs of quebec hannah mumbled soon the army was moving to grass hannah heard someone say that they were heading to the plains that meant nothing to her but her heart wasn t keeping the command of being quiet soon there were gunshots coming from all around it only seemed to last for seconds hannah had hidden behind the general trying to keep breathing the general died right in front of her he fell to the ground sputtering out blood hannah didn t know what to do she barely even moved over to him when she was being pulled up afraid of who it was she started to kick and scream she heard a man say that montcalm would be dead by morning she thought that must be the leader of the indians then she screamed out ali ali woke up in another bed it was a tad bit more comfortable but not by much a girl sat at the bottom of her bad and sighed it is time to get up sister when the girl left the room ali moved up to find a mirror she had to bite her tongue to hold back her scream she was staring at a brunette girl with brown eyes alice forced herself to say that she was blonde with blue eyes the girl in the mirror looked older and had a round face she breathed in maybe this was how hannah was able to look like a boy because to everyone else she was one alice turned around to find that hannah wasn t there how stupid alice breathed how could she have lost her best friend she quickly got dressed in the same outfit that she wore yesterday and ran outside there sitting at the table sat the girl a man and a woman they didn t look surprised to see her that was good alice took a seat where the girl pointed i know that you are excited for your brothers arrival the lady spoke to alice in a teachers voice but that doesn t mean that you have to run in the house

sorry alice ate the oatmeal in big gulps she wasn t tasting anything she was hoping that her `brother was hannah she felt guilty on losing her but she was also curious where had she gone what time was it how did they leave that farm in the country why had they left anyway hannah walked into the room absolutely shocked she was supposed to be in the war she was just taken away from the general seconds ago the other 3,999 soldiers had to drag her away what was she doing in this house it is good to see you brother alice screamed running towards her what just happened hannah whispered in ali s ear alice promised to tell her later at the moment hannah was being steered to grains in a bowl and told to eat the man talked about how the indian had died he also talked about how the treaty of paris was just signed in this year of 1763 the man also talked about how people could move since the britain s colonial empire was expanded this was just mumbles in the girls ears finally the woman suggested that alice and hannah go out for a walk like they always use to do this gave alice the time to get hannah caught up on things hannah stuttered yesterday it was 1731 now we have gone through a french and indian war that lasted for seven years then they signed the treaty of paris to end the war this year hannah seemed to get lost in thought trying to make sense of it all yes this year is 1763 we look like the brother and sister of that family to everyone else alice tried to slow down her thinking so that hannah could catch up didn t that man also say that we gave smallpox to the indians and people wonder why they are upset with us hannah sighed without noticing the crowd in front of them i am sorry but you can t pass this line a soldier was yelling from above what book came out now hannah grunted the british don t want us to pass this line it apparently is some law now a man yelled beside them the proclamation of 1763 alice groaned yes that is right the man cried is that our box hannah yelled pointing to the box alice grabbed hannah s hand and went running into the crowd they had just made it to the box before a soldier went running to catch up with them the box moved even farther away from the dirt line the girls kept on moving trying to get their hands on the box it had finally stopped about a mile away from the line panting hannah

grabbed and tried to move inside then came an arrow then another alice and hannah moved into the box and held their breath the proclamation was supposed to protect the indians i guess it is also to protect ourselves alice yelled then the box started to move it felt like being on a roller coaster it went up and down sideways and upside down it made you sick and wonder how you didn t feel this on the first time you moved through time chapter three hannah opened the box and laid on the stone road it was cold and bumpy at the touch she let out a low growl saying i think that i am going to be sick yes thy quartering act is horrible isn t it a man yelled over the noise that started to erupt what is a quartering act alice mumbled laying on the ground herself where have you been don t you have to feed and shelter them soldiers that king sent in the man looked puzzled the king makes us fight for him but then doesn t trust us hannah asked in confusion that sound about right the man left with the questions sticking to the roofs of the girl s mouths we should follow the crowd to find more answers why are we both wearing boy s clothing alice yelped sure enough they were both wearing an orange vest and pants they both had long socks and a white shirt this time grandfather had left a watch and a note saying to watch the time since it goes fast when having fun what on earth is that supposed to mean hannah complained throwing the paper on the ground this is a horrible color alice picked at the vest no more quartering act the crowd shouted no more sugar act the crowd yelled the girls looked at each other in confusion no one told them about that no more stamp act the same crowd was saying i am so confused hannah yelled over the shouts grandfather did say to watch the time alice screamed hannah then realized that alice had another note in her pocket she grabbed it and started to read it said that the sugar act was a law placing a tax on sugar molasses and other products shipped to the colonies the stamp

act was a law requiring all legal and commercial documents to carry an official stamp showing that a tax had been paid the acts were taxes hannah didn t understand what the big deal is she shared her feelings to alice ali was puzzled too until another note came this one said that the colonies had no share on making the acts he then went on to say that parliament just made them which made the colonist s furious grandfather then said that they had boycotts and instructed the girls to become a member of the son s of liberty confused the girls walk farther into the crowd trying to find the other side they were pushed and grabbed by the people alice had to grab hannah s hand for fear that she would get lost they weren t paying attention and ran right into someone surprised they all looked at each other the girls mumbled an apology hey aren t you thy people that had asked about getting into the son s of liberty the man yelled sure hannah replied sorry that i took so long to answer back oh where are my manners i am samuel adams sam said aren t you like famous alice said jumping up and down the man laughed and told them to meet some other time alice feeling better trudged off leaving hannah chasing after her soon they were having a race and didn t notice that another crowd was forming the girls didn t notice that the watch also said the year they didn t notice that it was now march 5 1770 oops sorry alice giggled after she ran into another man i am crispus attucks the african man replied i am ali and this is my friend hannah ali blurted out the man looked confused and moved farther into the crowd ali bit her tongue realizing that they were dressed as men and not the girls that they were she had made a mistake and was going to try to fix it she grabbed hannah s hand and moved her into the crowd she got to the man just in time to see him get shot hannah moved ali from where she stood hannah knew they had to get out of the crowd who were now trampling trying to get out of there the british soldiers stood there with their guns raised shocked it took all the force that ali had not to scream she hated guns she hated the soldiers she hated her father for killing her mother she just was filled with hate and it scared her it s called the boston massacre the crowd scared the soldiers and they shot five people including that man crispus attucks the soldiers went to court they had a lawyer named john adams cousin to samuel adams because he believed that everyone had a right and was a subject to the rule of law the jury agreed with john that the soldiers shot in self-defense and let them free hannah read the note that their grandfather sent them.

alice got up and walked down the road hannah followed not talking she knew that ali needed some space to think they didn t notice that people rushed into a building they only realized when they were pushed into it themselves hannah pointed out samuel adams right before he spoke thy parliament has repealed the townshend act thy one that was passed in 1767 to tax our imports thy act that we are going to waste tonight is thy tea act he yelled the cheers and screams were so loud that the girls didn t hear the rest of the speech they were soon dressed in indian clothes and had chalk on their face people were cheering about going on a boston tea party hannah who hadn t realized that grandfather had sent another not asked alice i thought that they were boycotting the tea and if we are going to a party why are we dressed like indians this isn t an actual party they are going to go on ships and dump all the tea out this is a disguise so we don t get caught hannah the british get angry i do not want to do this ali cried out neither do i let s sneak out hannah screamed pushing the men aside outside the girls walked slowly wondering what would happen to them they were surprised that the man had let them out they were called cowards and foal names they were cursed at which made them feel even more guilty they were still in shock that they didn t notice that they were being followed what are you two doing asked a soldier the girls reacted with running the man behind them started shouting chasing after them the girls took off the costume and tried to hide soon the shouting turned to a whisper the girls found themselves standing beside a man on a horse the british are coming he said paul revere hannah smiled as the man nodded hannah look ali said pushing her forward they rushed into a building where alice had seen samuel adams he was surprised to see them and even more surprised when they asked what is going on the british are coming to find us all the people outside are going to protect john hancock and i since we are holing guns from the british they have destroyed some of our supplies but do not worry everything will be okay sam said i have news that they are coming and william and paul were captured a man yelled from the doorway.

soon their were gunshots every where hannah took a peek outside to realize that their box was in the middle of the fight she told alice and soon they were running for their lives there was shots blood and screams that made lexington and concord a nightmare it was like a scene from a scary movie luckily the girls made it to the box in one piece they got in the box to be transported again chapter four they should really put seat belts in there hannah said moving out of the box alice nodded while checking her pockets she was not very happy to realize that they were not back at the farm she wasn t even happy to find another note about what had happened while they were in the box there was the declaration of independence sent to the king you know the one where they said that they will go to war if they don t get their rights the king refused the war started off bad for the colonist until 1777 at the battle of saratoga when burgoyne and his army surrendered then the french started to help alice started why is it so cold hannah interrupted welcome to valley forge a man mumbled george washington what are we doing here alice grew big eyed thy british made us move up here i am sorry i am being called george called out oh i remember this place this is where the army camped in the winter of 1777 through 1778 hannah recalled hannah grabbed blankets from the box before it disappeared there were ton of them so they handed them out it wasn t that long until they were moved even farther into time soon they were sitting in a school house looking at a teacher does anyone know anything about thy battle of charles town the women asked thy battle by south carolina in 1780 which is where we suffered our worst defeat a little boy stuttered who was sitting by alice very good henry what was the battle of yorktown the lady quizzed the last battle in the war where the french and american forces led by george washington defeated the general cornwallis on october 19 1781 a girl in the first row replied soon there was bell and everyone was running toward the door saying give me liberty or give me death patrick henry alice announced.

soon they were in another room hiding in the curtains they hear voices and decide it would be better to be quiet which is a good thing sitting in the room is benjamin franklin john adams and john jay they are talking about the treaty of paris alice looks at the watch to find out that it is september 3 1783 the room was very dusty ali wrinkled her nose she had to sneeze she tried to keep it in she thought that since the rest of her was frozen that a sneeze couldn t come out it did it was so loud that people in the next town could of heard it who is there john adams called run hannah screamed they ran into another room and hesitated was it worth it to go into the box it was either that or get into trouble and ruin their future.it also could take them home they dashed into the box feeling that stomach turning roller coaster that the box did when it went through time chapter five the girls almost get trampled coming out of the box people that look like farmers have guns and are pushing them to the curb startled ali grabbed hannah moving her farther away from the crowd they rushed into a house and asked what was going on shay and some other workers are upset about the taxes and how they are not being paid the man shook his head in disapproval after the chaos was over the girls made their way back onto the road and into town hannah waited until no one was around and asked what did we miss ali picked out the note in her red vest and stated we missed the northwest territory which is land northwest of the appalachians covered by the land ordinance of 1785 oh the land ordinance of 1785 is the law that establishes a plan to dividing the federal owned lands in the northwest territory there are now the articles of confederation that was a plan for national government ratified in 1781 then there is the people that are the confederation congress which is basically like our congress today that man named shay had a rebellion which is called shays rebellion he gets caught but people start to think about giving more power to the national government i have no idea what you just said so i will leave that up to you hannah yawned.

hannah started to mess with her blue vest when she realized that the clock said it was may 25 1787 she sighed when she saw a note in her pocket too she picked it up and gave it to ali hannah was not going to get stuck reading that one she knew that ali would get back at her by doing the same exact thing oh great james madison washington morris roger sherman scotsborn james wilson and other people making 55 delegates are having a secret meeting to make the constitution that we have today alice hummed great but what are we doing here then don t look at me i have no idea i just read the notes hannah was puzzled it didn t make sense they couldn t learn anything else about the convention since nobody knew about it they couldn t be inside to find anything there was no reason the be here then she saw a man she walked up to him and asked him what was on his mind maybe that would get her out of her own problems oh this virginia plan he stuttered what is that didn t you hear edmond randolph told thy plan that james madison made it had three branches thy executive branch would enforce laws thy judicial branch will interpret law thy legislative branch then would make laws then it will also have an upper house and a lower house there will be representatives in both houses by thy population and wealth hannah smiled and nodded she knew that the branches worked she hopped off to see that ali was talking to another man she didn t want to interrupt so she didn t hear that they were talking about the new jersey plan william paterson made this plan for the smaller states it called for a single-house congress in which states have one vote the man said that makes sense thank you she said rushing up to hannah soon the girls talked about what they had just heard they soon were getting into arguments about which one should be passed they weren t the only ones either all the americans were fighting over it it made the girls very nervous they had never really fought before finally they were moved to june 11 1787 they hadn t spoke in a while but hannah broke the silence there has to be a way that we can both get our way there is the house of representatives has legislatures based on state population alice squealed.

the senate has an equal votes from each state hannah smiled they didn t know that a man was overhearing their conversation.this man was hiding in the shadows out of sight his name was roger sherman he liked the idea so he showed it to congress it was passed and was know as the great compromise i don t understand ali said as the moved through time after being in september 17 1787 understand the three-fifths compromise hannah rolled her eyes to the thought yes that three-fifths of the slaves will count as taxation and population in the legislatures i understand that i just wonder why slaves sound useful in the first place relax ali they are free in the future we don t have slaves where we live they were now walking down the street ali was having another five minutes to complain and was using her time wisely hannah who never really paid attention to ali s complaints spent most of the time watching the people and the houses it was very peaceful but it wasn t home are you a federalist or an antifederalist a man asked interrupting the girls thoughts a federalist is a person who wants the constitution and the antifederalist want a bill of rights ali said reading grandfather s note we are antifederalist hannah yelled nudging alice to the box yes since the bill of rights work in our time alice said oops she was just joking hannah closed the door to the confused man chapter five george washington is president hannah breathed yes and there is a federal judiciary act made in 1789 that was a law passed by the first congress that set up lower courts you know like judges ali spoke in monotone were are we hannah asked as the marched with other soldiers into a forest that looked like a tornado hit we are in the battle of fallen timber the time is 1794 it was or is a battle between native americans and american forces ali kept reading the note we moved again we are now in the u.s government i think at least that is what is says hannah kept walking oh the treaty of greenville in 1795 treaty where 12 tribes of native americans gave us much of ohio and indiana poor native americans
