my dream of getting my work out there i want people to see what i do right before i closed my store i had a talk with a very smart woman man did she piss me off but i believe it was one of the single most influential conversations i have ever had she said april if you are an artist why are you trying to be a business woman so i am embracing being an artist i am embracing being broke all the artists can feel me on this one i am embracing taking chances and being uncomfortable and above all else i am embracing hope so what inspires no good riding hood you knew it was coming this is easy two things keep me going everyday i want my daughters luna and vega to look back on these times and remember how i fought i want that to make them fight when the time comes that they need to and second i want to inspire others to find beauty in the unconventional it is easy to look at something sparkly and new and see its appeal it is quite another to look at something weathered and a little beaten and see its grace underneath the age and the condition that is the soul mission of what i do so this year my hope for all of you is that you keep going find whatever it is that lights that fire in your belly and chase it i have learned that it really is okay to fall down you just have to have the courage to keep getting back up when you do.

is it cold enough for ya yes it is it s pittsburgh in january and if you can t think of anything more original to say to me please turn your attention to someone else i m not a cliché kind of guy as a matter of fact i hate cliché i m typically a guy who can cut the mustard and i can stand the heat in the kitchen i don t typically have an axe to grind but i m about at the end of my rope and at my wits end with people who think they re going assover-tea-kettle to be friendly by offering me a cliché as a salutation if you re that person maybe you should go back to the drawing board get out from behind the eight ball and come up with something a little original like hey what s your sign a common cliché this time of year for those weak in social skills is so did ya make any new year s resolutions you my friend get a zero goose egg zippo zippy zilch for originality pardon me if i don t answer you or even worse if i use my iphone to merely flash you a picture of the monument to my last year s resolution a treadmill with clothing hanging from it you can bet the farm and your bottom dollar that even though you might be busier than a one-armedpaper-hanger i am too but i m still creative you should burn the midnight oil or even burn the candle at both ends and come up with a greeting that actually means something to the who you re talking wtf is perfectly acceptable because i understand that if you don t go back to the drawing board and find something more original to say to me especially if you ve known me for the last 12 months or more i might have to call a spade a spade call you on the carpet and bust your chops but i m not sure that i really want to open that can of worms i might just let the sleeping dog lie look i don t mean to sound like a broken record but the bottom line is you don t have a snow ball s chance in hell of me acknowledging you if you can t be original in your approach that s right you re spinning your wheels and if you lead off with a cliché it s over from the start because you can t put toothpaste back in the tube we re gonna have to start from scratch if you want to be bffs or even just fs put it this way if you re trying to talk to me and you lead with a cliché you are going to feel as frustrated as a 16-year old no-armed kid sitting in the front row at club erotica i made that one up on my own pretty good huh so if you make one resolution this year make a promise that you will keep your nose to the grindstone on finding ways to be more creative in conversation especially with strangers if you did i d be as happy as a clam or a lark and this promise to change is just the tip of the iceberg if you are a traditional cliché user you gotta man up give 110-percent and leave it all on the field 24/7/365 if you want to have someone go head-over-heels for you and offer you a job or a date if i were someone looking to hire you or even worse a girl you were trying to hook up with and you threw a cliché on me i would probably tell you to stick it where the sun don t shine go pound salt and go f yourself but then again like i said i m not a cliché kind of person ya jagoff new year s is a harmless annual institution of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks and friendly calls and humbug resolutions mark twain we added this `cause people that use cliché s usually also use quotes happy new year author s note if you make one resolution for 2012 please make sure it s that you will read our blog posts www.yajagoff.com more often!

the restaurant critic jackson s by mercedes pelka over the flame all of this was a-top mashed purple potatoes and the applevanilla swede sauce now i had some reservations about the sauce but it turned out to be a great addition to the apple wood chicken as a dipping sauce the menu is very reasonably priced the food is distinguished and the service is very attentive to the customer throughout the whole experience i would recommend jackson s to anyone whether for date night a big sports game or an evening out with the girls they also have a very abundant wine and alcohol list that is sure to please any pallet by the way if anyone was curious my date went very well and a few days later he asked me out again it was probably because we went to jackson s recently i went out on a first date i had the feeling it was going to be one of those awkward first dates where you need to make casual conversation and keep it interesting enough so there is no uncomfortable silence thankfully we went out to a restaurant called jackson s located in moon township pa it is a sophisticated neighborhood restaurant with an open demonstration kitchen they serve artfully presented american cuisine with an international influence they pride themselves on their appeal to all groups from the fully loaded bar area with a booth section equipped with televisions for the sports fanatics to the gorgeous back restaurant dining area for the traditional dinner guest walking into the restaurant confirmed my perception that it was going to be a four star evening once seated and looking over menu options i realized how important presentation was to the staff and owners i chose the apple wood grilled chicken breast with apple and vanilla swede sauce smashed purple potatoes and baby carrots as my dinner when i received my plate it looked like something out of a magazine and much to pretty to eat but i knew it was going to be delicious the chicken was done to perfection many restaurants overcook their chicken causing it to be dry this apple wood chicken was cooked in tip-top condition and very juicy the carrots were brined in a butter sauce and roasted the place of relaxation for healthier rejuvenated younger looking skin without the harmful chemicals needles or undergoing surgery all natural spray tanning hydration station red light therapy paraffin wax treatments plus hempz and body drench products 412-828-8500 www.sweetestlounge.com 416 allegheny river boulevard suite 202 oakmont pa 15139 located within village square

sports new years resolution by jon anderson every january thousands upon thousands of people make new years resolutions to try and improve their lives people buy gym memberships go on diets attempt to quit smoking and much more it is great that people want to physically and emotionally better themselves and i do not want to discourage anyone from doing so but right now i want to propose something different for this round of resolutions when was the last time you stepped back and took a look at your personal sports fan hood have you ever thought about challenging it trying to improve it and get more out of watching and following sports unlike dropping 20 pounds you will not even have to get off the couch to keep this resolution alive true or false if ben roethlisberger throws for 150 more yards than the opposing quarterback he automatically outplayed said quarterback true or false if andrew mccutchen goes the whole 2012 season without making an error you could automatically say he was one of the best center fielders in the league if you answered those questions with true you need to seriously consider taking this resolution into consideration i am talking about deceptive sports statistics and beliefs we have been watching these sports all our lives and somehow so many of us are uninformed about what really matters total passing yards says very little about a quarterback s value to his team during a given game that statistic is dependent on pass attempts which the quarterback himself has very little control over the flow and situations of the game are key determinants of passing attempts which directly influences passing yards knowing that how could you possibly say that roethlisberger played a better game than the opposing team s quarterback just because he threw for more yards you need to look at more telling statistics those can be as simple as completion percentage and yards per attempt or you can go deeper and get into some advanced statistics like win probability added and expected points added you are not going to see those statistics in a newspaper box score you would have trouble finding them on conventional sports websites for that matter.

that s just one of many examples in football you can go to www.advancednflstats.com to get the whole picture baseball is an even harder sports to fully understand there is a ridiculous amount of statistics for the sport but a lot of them tell you very very little take runs batted in for example that statistic is largely determined by where a player hits in the batting order two players could have the exact same season at the plate but their rbi totals would be different just because of who they hit behind which they have no control over there is no reason to even look at rbi totals when you are trying to determine what kind of season a player had also take the situation mentioned above with mccutchen and errors the fact is that different center fielders have different range one center fielder can get to a ball that another center fielder cannot the faster fielder can make an error on a ball that another fielder could never even get to and therefore not he would not have the opportunity to make an error again there are various other situations like this one and you can read more at www.fangraphs.com these are two specific examples but this really all comes down to how you see the big picture stop blindly buying into the elementary views and analysis that has been fed to you all of your life by espn and other large media outlets there is so much more to sports than you see at the surface you just have to find it for yourself when 2012 rolls around hit the gym try to stop smoking fight the urge to eat that chocolate cake and do some reading about advanced sports metric and do not be afraid to let it change how you watch the game the mceffect is the web site to jon anderson http www.mceffect.com the mc effect is always looking for new ideas and external writings so feel free to contact jon with suggestions or anything you would like you can also find jon on twitter.

preach love and music walking down penn avenue on a dreary cold night i heard the beat of the bongos emitting from beyond the walls of the tapas bar seviche within just a few moments i could tell the gray mood the weather created would seen be transformed into one of color that s just the energy preach freedom exudes one of vibrance one of life and one of cool enthusiasm erie native keeps good vibes alive in the steel city by chelsey engel what s bad one might ask anything that don t make my booty move preach states matter-of-factly good music has a message and agitates the grave this is the exact mindset preach maintains when writing his music singing about what s going on in the world around us and turning the negatives into beautiful music is what preach s style is all about frustration from issues and of course talent in a white tribal-inspired shirt and two lonesome dreadlocks hanging from beneath his woven hat preach freedom looked at home sitting behind his bongo drum behind him hung vintage cubanesque paintings adding to the very latin feel of the evening of course preach was the main contribution to the ambience joined by puerto rican turned pittsburgh singer gena and rusted root guitarist colter harper the trio filled the bar with their african and caribbean beats a far cry from what is commonly known of preach s hometown of erie pennsylvania the musician is tearing down those typecasts however as he explores the music world which for him and so many other artists began in the church if you went to church you had to sing in a choir preach states hands casually folded on the dimly-lit table in seviche but to be honest i came up in church before they let secular music in luckily enough for preach however his family s love for music allowed him to be introduced to the greats such as jimi hendrix janis joplin and marvin gaye to preach going against discrimination doesn t end with race or gender but continues with music as well his list of influences ranges from gospel to country from reggae to rock it is obvious that there are no boundaries separating preach from enjoyable tunes to me there are two types of music good and bad preach claims such as schools losing funding for the arts and gas companies contaminating people s water supply from fracking really burns my butt according to preach these woes inspire the artist in an intense and swift way which is exactly what happened with his soon-to-be released album `freedom must be it took me two weeks to write that album and i woke up one day and occupy wall street happened perfect timing

preach reflects performed perfected and produced at the church recording studio here in pittsburgh the album is an assorted mix of african caribbean and reggae styles at least as is reflected in the 5-track ep called `ashe in the first song `unity preach s desire to send a positive message is easily heard along with his varied influences played to a beat that transports you to a tropical beach drink in hand of course the lyrics state children hush/somebody s calling our name freedom drums are playing again/i m not missing this train the tracks continue with their upbeat style all causing you to sway back and forth with a smile on your face preach s contribution to rusted root most definitely has the same infectious effect on concert attendees it s hard if not impossible to stand still at their shows as preach slams his drumset his dreadlocks flying from side to side when it s time for his solo the crowd goes wild as he plays a hulusi flute with one hand keeps the symbols going with the other and maintains a heart-pounding beat with his feet from the concert-goer side there is nothing crazier than a rusted root show and according to preach it s the same from their point of view it is an incredible energy there s a party on stage just like there is in the audience preach states laughing in his deep soulful tone it s balls to the wall every night preach s involvement with the band spans back four years to a show he was performing with his hometown band one world tribe the tour manager for the new yorkbased group big leg emma approached preach to inform him that rusted root was in need of a drummer and although he was not familiar with the band s music at the time he nailed the audition and has been rocking it out with the eclectic gang ever since preach does not forget his beginnings however as he continues to jam with his erie crew of one world tribe formed in 1993 the tribe represents the human family to preach their sound is music for the people from the people the group now dedicates their time to working in the community and keeping the collective vibes alive we have played more in schools and communities recently than in bars and venues preach says one world tribe as a group itself represents the people which is evident when you see the diversity on stage this is an accomplishment that the world has said to be impossible according to the lead singer fathers mothers catholics jews muslims black white we have every nationality in the band preach states we have broken that stereotype that says we can t be in the same room together and not kill each other twenty years later we re still making music preach is hopeful that 2012 is going to be a big year for the group although his time touring with rusted root has kept him from reuniting with the tribe recently he is ready to get back to those roots as the group has recently signed with little fish records and will be hitting the road more often in the near future with his wide range of talent and commitment to the community preach manages to keep his head from floating into the sky to him it s not about success or competition or gaining recognition getting his message out to his fans and keeping music alive is number one on his list so what is his message support art everywhere all the time because without you the people we wouldn t exist preach states with a smile one love
