automotive technology 2012 tech prep student of the year each year one student is recognized as the moberly area technical center career technical student of the year to be eligible for this award students must meet the following criteria personal commitment to career and technical education program in which enrolled or completed success in core requirements evidence of personal character and leadership involvement in school/community activities involvement in career and technical student organizations commitment to post-secondary career and technical program or 2+2 program this year alex egley was chosen as the moberly area technical center career technical student of the year alex is a senior from moberly high school and is enrolled in the computer aided design drafting program he intends to continue his education at the university of kansas majoring in architectural engineering alex is pictured with mark hawkins computer aided design drafting instructor at matc because working on cars was my hobby and i had family members who were i n the automotive field i have always been interested in cars and thought i would like to further my knowledge as a junior i learned about engine repair brakes tires alignment electrical and how to use a scan tool after my junior year at matc i got a job at lee tire company in moberly working through the summer doing suspension repairs and alignments it wasn t like going to work students are also trained in the proper use of it was fun this experience helped me decide diagnostic test equipment in the repair that i wanted to pursue a career as an automotive process the course is divided into the eight technician automotive service excellence ase training last year i was recruited out of mr magruder s areas class at matc to further my training with mckenworth i started by spending the summer in automotive technology you will study at the mhc-kenworth shop in columbia i then engine repair went to oklahoma state university in okmulgee engine performance oklahoma for 8 weeks of classroom training i suspension and steering will continue this rotation from school to work for brakes two years when i will then be a full time diesel electrical systems technician automatic transmissions manual drive trains aaron findling heating and air conditioning i have been working on trucks for a while with you will perform wheel alignments engine my dad we build trucks to race in the mud and teardowns and repairs transmission teardown we also do trail riding i decided i wanted to and repairs brake overhauls engine tune-ups know more about mechanics so i signed up for the automotive technology class at matc i am and electrical repairs a second year student and have learned about i use my advisory board as a link to the real world tools shop safety steering and suspension and they help me stay up to date on current vehicles we are now studying electricity and electronics they also advise me on changes needed in the earlier this year i totally rebuilt a chevrolet v8 shop and curriculum sometimes they will hire engine i hope to compete in the skillsusa and ford aaa contests later this year i plan to attend my students and allow others to job shadow the mhc kenworth school when i graduate dylan huffman i enrolled in the automotive technology class charlie magruder instructor automotive technology is a two-year automotive service excellence ase certified program open to juniors and seniors designed to prepare students to service and repair automobiles course content includes development of inspection skills diagnosis of defects or malfunctions disassembly repair overhaul and replacement of automobile engines power trains steering brakes and electrical systems.

building technology building technology i is an introduction into the world of construction and all things related to it the skills attained range from things as basic as reading a tape measure to things as complicated as using a transit building technology ii is more advanced and gets more in-depth into the world of construction so students get a real feel for how the field the real world is going to be students are expected to have mastered competencies from building technology i and have more to master in building technology ii what students learn in building technology basic carpentry basic plumbing basic cabinet making introduction to iron working tie steel and some welding skid loader operation use of layout tools such as a builder s level and transit basic roofing projects each year the building technology program gets to work on various projects throughout the district and community we do at least one roof each year pour concrete and we have framed up a pitched roof sheeted and put tin on it other projects could include pole barns and maybe a house the other kinds of projects will be ones the students want to do in the winter when it is cold each student is allowed to do a pre-approved project in the shop it can be anything from a deer blind to a china cabinet all the student needs is a print with shop drawings to work from a material list or take off sheet and the material itself material will not be provided for personal projects possible projects concrete decks cabinetry skid loader operation and maintenance personal projects plumbing exercises adam smith instructor the embedded credit program is an opportunity for students to earn one 1 credit in mathematics and/or communication arts along with the six 6 credits students will earn in their technical program at moberly area technical center during the student s junior and senior years to enroll in the embedded credit program a student must have their home school counselor verify that the embedded math and/or embedded communication arts credit is needed for the student s graduation requirements counselors will then initiate embedded credit enrollment of the student at matc communication arts mathematics student must be a junior or senior student must be enrolled in a 3-hour technical program student will take a pretest covering 28 math concepts to determine weak math skills the embedded mathematics will be taught within the technical program where the mathematic concepts and topics will be applied to the technical program s competencies and may include assignments outside of the technical program s classroom/shop/lab six 6 math topics will be mastered each semester for .25 credit therefore one 1 credit may be earned over a two-year period each math topic must be completed at 70 or higher accuracy the embedded mathematics credit will be granted at the end of each semester that the student has successfully completed six 6 math topics student must pass the technical program to earn the embedded mathematics credit student must be a junior or senior student must be enrolled in a 3-hour technical program the embedded communication arts will be taught within the technical program where the concepts and topics will be applied to the technical program s competencies completion of some assignments will require time outside of the technical program s classroom/shop/lab four 4 objectives or assignments will be completed each semester for .25 credit therefore one 1 credit may be earned over a two-year period each assignment must be completed at 70 or higher accuracy the embedded communication arts credit will be granted at the end of each semester that the student has successfully completed four 4 assignments student must pass the technical program to earn the embedded communication arts credit embedded credit terry soendker coordinator

computer applications computer application is another name for computer software it is software that is developed by a company or single person that performs a task computers are an integral part of the business landscape they are an effective tool in so many different aspects of a business s daily operations including bookkeeping business communications product design manufacturing inventory control and marketing microsoft office 07 is an essential skill for today s employee having critical business information stored electronically and the ability to easily extract specific data from the database is a valuable asset to a business database programs such as access are used to print high quality and professional looking output many companies use a spreadsheet for numerical and financial data and to analyze and evaluate information excel spreadsheets are used for creating financial statements preparing budgets managing inventory and analyzing cash flow being an effective communicator is o n e of the most marketable job skills you can possess microsoft power point is a presentation graphics program that can be projected through a computer to a large screen or other formats including slides or transparencies communicating and managing information are needs that drive our entire economy word is a program that helps individuals and companies organize analyze and present information students quotes i chose to take computer applications so i can better understand how microsoft office works and to learn to type faster and more accurately in this class i have learned how to use microsoft office 07 programs for example word and excel i have also learned to type more quickly and efficiently gabe warren moberly high school i chose to take computer applications because some day i want to become a photographer in order to become one i must learn how to use the photoshop software i need this core class in order to learn more advance software in classes like graphic arts and multimedia ­ kiatcha schultz moberly high school student services accounting i ii accounting provides business people with the ability to track all aspects of the financial side of a business no matter what your chosen role in the business world accounting can provide a solid foundation for the financial side why should my student attend ma tc matc combines technical skill training with traditional academics to prepare our students to meet the challenges of a continually changing workforce as you read through this publication and view the many unique opportunities available to prerequisite successful completion of medical anatomy or high school level anatomy and physiology this course is designed to build on prior basic anatomy and physiology knowledge the curriculum makes pathophysiology the changes symptoms that accompany a particular syndrome or disease incredibly easy to learn by using vivid graphic characters the characters and pictures help students maximize their power of visual thinking in understanding pathophysiology content includes basic descriptions of how disorders occur what signs to look for and if there are risk factors that contribute to disorders all of which help prepare students pursuing medical careers medical contemporary issues grades 10-121/2 creditsemester this course is designed to build an awareness and understanding of current issues technology collision repair technology is an automotive class offered in which we work on the bodies of cars the work we do can be on the outside of the car or your interior the types of job we do range from fixing dents to frame work it is one of the programs that offers articulation which is free college credit that will transfer to certain schools if you like hands-on work and are passionate about cars this is a class you may consider taking the class is three periods long and taught by lonnie oliver five things you will learn how to apply primer properly how to repair dents how to work a frame machine how to weld properly how to write an estimation five class projects you will do i car welding test painting projects s.e.m certification skills usa competition optional restoration projects why students enroll in the program cody-wanted to pursue a career in collision after high school austin-thought the program looked cool lauren worked on cars all her life and enjoys doing it jessie-wanted to go to college for collision lonnie oliver instructor mental health issues in health care grades 10-121/2 creditsemester this course is designed for students interested in pursuing a medical career and learning about mental health issues covered within this class include assessment diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in a long term and community based setting diagnoses covered include but not limited to depressive disorders anxiety disorders bipolar affective disorder manic depressive schizophrenia chemical dependence and eating disorders legal and ethical issues in health care grades 10-121/2 creditsemester this course is designed for students interested in pursuing a medical career and will introduce them to legal moral and ethical dilemmas health care professionals deal with on a daily basis students will research and debate malpractice cases investigate cases of license revocation criminal and civil law right to die privacy rights within health care along with current controversial issues within health care the legal and ethical implications of these issues will also be discussed in this course gtawtig ofc/ofwtorch cutting and welding brazing plasma arc cutting carbon arc cutting the use of semiautomatic cutting and welding equipment and are encouraged to work at their own speed second year students will complete projects and have on-the-job training opportunities at some of the community businesses students also have the opportunity to become american welding society aws certified see below this course is a two-year half-day program open to juniors and seniors for 2-3 units of credit each year to enroll in welding ii students must successfully complete welding i american welding society certification level i matc is approved by the american welding society aws to train and certify entry-level welders we are a level 1 sense school schools excelling through national skill standards education students are pre-tested to determine how much training is needed in order to receive certification which requires passing a written exam and hands-on welding tests the written exam consists of 225 questions covering the following topics safety electrical principles math/measuring smaw stick gmaw mig gtaw tig fcaw flux core mig pac plasma arc cutting cac-a carbon arc cutting-air and ofc/w oxy-fuel cutting and welding principles visual exams welding terms and definitions students must also pass hands-on welding tests using the above welding processes records of successful applicants are maintained by aws in a nationwide welding registry this system allows employers to verify individual welding qualifications easily and with confidence without additional testing successful applicants are maintained on active status with the national registry for at least one year 13 welding technology-articulated and dual credit is available for this program embedded credit is available in this program in distribution financing marketing-information management and product service management opportunities are provided for students to apply problemsolving information gathering processing and reporting emphasis will be placed on promotional planning and public relations through community involved research projects and event planning activities financial considerations related to business profit/loss will be explored throughout the course students are presented with problem-solving situations for which they must apply high-level critical thinking skills as with marketing the students are also in charge of operating the matc cornerstone school store on a rotation basis throughout the year and participation in the work cooperative education program is an option yet it will give students an first aid body mechanics etc students will also have opportunities to meet and talk with current health care professionals tour of health care settings and interact with patients by participating in screening clinics at various local businesses ex blood pressure vision etc medical anatomy grades 10­12 1/2 credit 1st semester this course is designed for students interested in pursuing a medical career the curriculum of the program is designed to help students develop a solid beginning foundation in anatomy and physiology the anatomy in clay curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning as students use manikins and clay to build the anatomy systems of the human body the content of this class will enhance students knowledge base needed for pursuing a medical career medical skills grades 10­12 1 2 creditsemester this course is designed to help familiarize students with some of the basic safety and health care skills a medical professional first develops included in the curriculum but not limited to is the practicing of such skills as cardiopulmonary resuscitation first aide vital signs transfers and principles of infection control medical terminology grade 10-12 1/2 creditsemesterarticulated credit is available for this course this course is designed to help students acquire the medical language used by health care professionals the curriculum is presented in an easy format which helps students break down every term into its components by understanding how each term is formed students can then better identify and understand new medical terms in addition each chapter profiles a different health profession and body system while prompting students to master each term and its pronunciation by practicing pronouncing new terms with the aid of an audio glossary introduction to medical administration grade 10-12 1/2 creditsemester this course is designed to review students basic math skills then apply those skills to practical math applications utilized by medical career professionals the curriculum is presented in a problem solving format utilizing applications from different medical fields the content of this course is intended to build a beginning foundation of knowledge by applying and using examples of medication administration and procedures used by medical care professionals no medication will be administered in this course medical volunteer their time to work with the medical technology instructors to insure that the program keeps current regarding new health care and educational trends advisors make many suggestions regarding class has helped me so much in pursuing a career in the health field giving me and teaching me about all the different career options has helped out in directing me towards a career in the dental field once i graduate from college shelby aleshire ­ moberly i took the preparations for medical professions class because i want to go into the medical field it s a very informative class and it helps with the basics of the medical field it includes things like learning 300 root words it s easier than it sounds trust me and how to check vital signs it s a must for those interested in anything medical kelli westhues ­ moberly i took preparations for medical professions because i found out if you re going into the medical field this would be a very good class to prepare you for whatever medical field you are seeking at first i didn t know how it was going to be but it has turned out to be very helpful and lots of fun zach vomund ­ moberly mental health issues in health care ­ learn about the history of mental illness and examine the different diagnoses such as anxiety disorder schizophrenia addictions and much more i took mental health issues in health care to learn more about the mind when working in a health field you have to know how to treat the whole person mrs kelly is a great teacher and she has exposed us to other topics that i haven t learned in any other class before logan nichols ­ moberly legal and ethical issues in health care ­ want to dive into legal and ethical dilemmas by debating discussing and researching issues such as stem cell research euthanasia the right to die etc then join us as we learn laws and ethical issues that concern health care the legal and ethical issues in health care class room itself is very mellow and calm the materials and books covered the curriculum very well opinions from experts and physicians were added and reviews of court cases that covered the subject of the chapter were included this class would
