what reformer saw nellie bly observed the cruel conditions faced by the mentally ill the hospitals for the impaired were dirty bugs existed where food existed and waste material was ubiquitous the food that was fed to the patients was terrible they were given hard bread and grey meat the patients bathed in cold water and were given a thin piece of cloth to wear to bed doctors and nurses were nonchalant about patients and did not show any respect to the patient s well being what nellie bly thought nellie bly thought that it was inhumane to treat someone as an inferior because of being abnormal especially because being abnormal is not a choice it s a condition that people are just born with and will have to endure regardless she pitied the mentally unstable she knew it wasn t their fault for being how they are she couldn t stand the fact that mental hospitals were taking advantage of them knowing that the patients were too impaired to realize that they deserve better the hospitals practically tortured their patients when they should be doing the exact opposite she believed that the mentally ill should be nurtured and given love just like any other individual a hospital is supposed to be a place of solace not terror what nellie bly did nellie bly did what most reformers could not do she was dedicated and sacrificed many years of her life to somehow better the lives of the mentally ill she decided on a plan she faked insanity to matriculate herself into a mental institution this way she can get the intensive experience of being an impaired patient and also receive primary evidence after undergoing her entire plan of impersonating an impaired person she wrote a news column to convey her whole experience when the public read her news column they were in awe government reform new york city officials approved additional funds to approve the treatment of the mentally ill treatment of the mentally ill improved and living conditions for the impaired was enhanced michelle tsang sharmin shaikh and guljar nahar 8235 december 1st
