www.westernweekender.com.au opinion from the editor s desk troy dodds will santa claus bring mr rudd a scalpel the people of penrith probably want a little bit of a rest from politics next year hence a political leave pass is on many people s lists no such luck we have a council election in september next year and you can expect plenty of hype and activity in the fi rst half of the year on the list of new panthers gm phil gould is a trouble-free 2012 season and perhaps a major sponsor which is still eluding the club at the moment troy.dodds@mediaview.com.au christmas season and the jury seems to be out on whether or not it will happen judging by the increased parking pain in penrith of late i d suggest plenty of people are giving the credit card a workout most parents of course would just be happy to have their kids at home this christmas tragically many won t the unfathomable death of young jake flannery over in bali this week is a parent s worst nightmare here was an 18-year-old bright young kid about to enter the real world with seemingly everything at his feet jake inadvertently grabbed a neon sign while walking down the street and was electrocuted somewhat unbelievable christmas means different things to many people but this time of year is somewhat fragile moments of happiness and joy and celebration can often turn to unthinkable tragedy a girl in her early 20 s lost her life in a car accident just a few suburbs away earlier this week in an instant that family s christmas is destroyed now and forever over the next three issues in the lead-up to christmas you ll read about stories of tragedy and of triumph you ll also read about countless christmas appeals and opportunities to give to those less fortunate i implore you all to not just turn the page think about the families left behind when tragedies occur and what it really means we need to listen we need to give and we need to care whatever you may `want this christmas let s not forget what we already `have youth fridays 6 8pm 9.30am 5.30pm see page 16 1031wwd3527 sundays once upon a kingdom i cnr northern rd m4 orchard hills ph 4736 3000 inchurchpenrith.com a member of australian christian november you can scoff at those already putting up their christmas tree and smile nervously as you walk past decorations in the major department stores not so easy in december and it s during these early december days that you really start to think about what you want for christmas now i m aware that come christmas day i ll get the obligatory cologne shirts undies and maybe even a gift voucher but one can dream can they not about a 3d television overseas trip and new car all of this got me thinking about what others may be wishing to have under their tree this year there seems little doubt now that kevin i m happy being foreign minister rudd would love the leadership of the labor party under his tree rudd is seemingly an expert at feeding the media what it wants to hear and it earned him front page last sunday and media coverage for several days about his dire concerns for labor and what he d do to reform the government s direction rudd told sky my overall fear is reflected in the speech that i delivered in brisbane yesterday in launching troy bramston s book on the light on the hill is that unless we undertake some serious organisational surgery that we end up being a third party in australian politics moments of happiness and joy and celebration can often turn to unthinkable tragedy let s hope that by christmas the panthers have a strong fi nancial deal on the table because the club deserves to go forward with major corporate support penrith may not be winning any competitions in the next two or three years but the structures being slowly implemented during those times will ensure the club eventually becomes the powerhouse it deserves to be a little boy i overheard in the shops last weekend simply wants a dinosaur for christmas tough ask but his quick-thinking father offloaded the concept straight to santa claus who i am presuming will be the bad guy come christmas day many retailers just want people through the doors and cash in the registers this hese days plenty of people work from home but back in the early 1950 s it was almost unheard of so it was perhaps unsurprising that back in september 1953 penrith city council knocked back a woman s application to open a hairdressing business in her home the nepean times reported that the lady had previously owned a hairdressing t turn back time shop in victoria street at st marys but wanted to start styling hair from home no such luck said council ald reddan said that council would not be fair to business people if they granted the request we have a business area and those places have to be licensed and inspected by our health inspector he said ald blair seconded the motion which was carried meanwhile around the same time business in st marys was booming council approved of a sketch plan of a wine lounge proposed to be erected in queen street at st marys by mr j d swales we re not quite sure if the wine lounge was ever built phone 02 9833 2913 address shop 1/159 queen st st marys 2760 www.westernweekender.com.au opinion dear weekender email penritheditorial@mediaview.com.au post suite 2 42-44 abel street jamisontown 2750 as a training ground for state and national sporting talent greg davies mayor of penrith brought to you by merv was a legend we ve lost a local legend with the passing of merv cartwright who helped put penrith city on the national and world sporting stage thank you merv western weekender november 25 merv made an enormous contribution to our community in particular to the st marys junior rugby league and the penrith panthers a leading figure in founding panthers rugby league club merv was instrumental in getting panthers into the nswrl competition in 1967 he worked tirelessly to promote our local club and make it the proud community and family oriented club it is today merv will be remembered as a talented and passionate coach and mentor who always brought out the best in people on and off the field he did what he did out of a love of the game and of our city his legacy continues through his children cliff david john maryann and michael and many grandchildren and our thoughts are with them at this sad time i d like to congratulate fastbowler pat cummins who at 18 is being celebrated as australia s next test hope after his great performance against south africa this week his seven wicket haul for the match was integral to australia s win and saw him take out man-of-thematch honours in his test debut a former penrith u16 squad member cummins is another example of our city s success the western weekender 1500 1650 maree as much as you did that is why our beloved penny panthers are in the elite comp today wendy runge via facebook thanks for honesty i would just like to say a big thank you to the kind person who handed in my wallet on monday night to the staff at coles cambridge gardens i must have dropped it while putting my groceries in the car the wallet was handed in with all my cards and cash still in it i would just like to say thank you as i didn t even realise i had lost it until coles rang me to say someone had handed it in it is great to see there are still kind hearted and honest people around especially at this time of the year helen fitzpatrick via email another bottle shop how many bottle shops does this city need bottle shop go-ahead western weekender november 25 i think we need to sober up dan stephenson via website as i reflect on 2011 through my news eyes it comes up as a remarkable one remarkable for the sheer ability of nature to turn happy good lives into ones of great sadness and struggle i reported from the queensland f loods and cyclone yasi and the christchurch earthquake then of course there was the massive tsunami in japan to this day i wonder how people are coping here in australia still battling insurance companies with no soul or moral compass or trying to fi nd employment after their jobs were wiped out by nature s brutal force and then there s japan cities townships industries obliterated and survivors to this day still w ithout anywhere to call home i know i write with a sad theme and do it as we head into the holiday season many of us are lucky enough to be preparing for wonder fulchri st ma s celebrations maybe a beach holiday mixed with the joy of watching kids opening their pressies from santa and yes we are off to the central coast and there will be plenty of christmas cheer at our place but there will also be a true understanding of just how tough the holiday christmas period can be for many many people believe it or not the suicide rate is especially high at this time of the year loneliness can bite people very very hard and even domestic violence can spike as families and friends come together mix in the alcohol and boom bravado can take over w it h d ist u rbi ng consequences all i am saying is if you feel lonely or on edge or if you know that one of your relatives or good friends is doing it a little tough in the mental health department do something about it reach out to someone and tell them things are not the way they should be i have spent many a christmas day checking on people i know just to make sure they are okay this christmas let s all spare a thought for our queensland comrades plus those from the wa bushfi res who have had their homes destroyed and of course our friends in christchurch and japan still wondering about what s ahead so on that note from my family to yours have a christmas of good fun and good mental health peter overton tom steinfort the faces of nine and the western
