lchs fabrications 10 20 30 course outline and expectations mr t.k mc bride tmcbride@wolfcreek.ab.ca lchs ­ 782 6615 the fab 10 20 30 courses are courses designed to give the student more specific skills related to working with metals many of the modules in the 20 course are extensions of the work the student has done in the fabrication 10 course in the rare event that a student has not received all 5 credits from fabrications 10 he/she may be required complete the failed modules from the 10 course before being able to move on to the 20 modules and 20 level modules must be completed before moving on to the 30 level modules course materials each day you are expected to attend and come to class prepared with the necessary materials these materials include assigned textbook eye protection safety glasses glasses must be worn in shop environment protective clothing coveralls and shoes 1 binder to keep modules organized and presentable pen pencil erasers supply of loose-leaf paper fabrication course content each module is worth 1 credit fab 1010 students investigate and describe operating principles related to the tools used in the welding industry fab 1040 the student develops basic skills in the safe handling and operation of oxyacetylene welding equipment fab 1048 the student will develop skills in the safe handling of semi-automatic welding equipment fab 1050 the student will develop basic skills related to the safe operation of one or more electric welding processes fab 20 30 level courses offered extend the students capabilities in welding techniques details may be obtained by looking at the program of studies note the individual courses listed may not be taught in the specific order as outlined course evaluation per module course evaluation per module theory practical habits ethics assignments are averaged 35 all jobs are averaged 35 work and safety skills are assessed 15 attitude responsibility and behaviour are assessed 15

lacombe composite high school cts strand fabrication studies personal protective equipment requirements item safety welding gloves description insulated welding gloves clear safety glasses oxy/acetylene welding goggles approved safety glasses with side shields shade #5 approved safety style either over glasses style or goggle type flexible are more comfortable than hard style beaked kromer cap your choice of colour approximate cost $4.00 $30.00 you get what you pay for $6.00 $25.00 welding hat available at l.c.h.s for $12.00 each starting at about $55.00 fire retardant or 100 cotton to reduce fire hazard these may be clean used coveralls as leather outerwear is long as they are not frayed top-pocket flaps provided for arc welding keep sparks out of your pockets polyester and synthetic blend coveralls tend to melt to your skin and are difficult to peel off in case of accidental fire steel-toed work boots high leather lace-ups so coveralls can cover the tops running-shoe height/style tend to be spark traps binder and loose-leaf to be duo-tang kept especially for fab an adequate supply of loose-leaf 50 sheets a pen and pencil are not supplied by the teacher required at every class coveralls overalls starting at about $90.00 note all safety wears may and can be provided however there are very limited supplies available first come first served.

classroom expectations 1 the welding course is a research course with hands on shop experience the student is responsible for his/her learning and achievement in each module reading and research skills are required to complete the theory aspect of the course self discipline and proper shop behaviour is essential to success in the practical work the student must attend class regularly and come prepared with necessary materials as outlined under the heading course materials the student is expected to complete all assignments and shop activities as outlined in each individual module in order to be successful and obtain 1-credit a all module due dates are mandated by the lchs cts department head and thus all module work must be completed on that date b it is the student s responsibility to check with the teacher or fellow students for missed assignments upon return from an absence due dates for each individual module will be posted in the classroom the student is required to bring their modules to every class a within each module is the list of assignments and shop activities that are mandatory for the successful completion of the module b when modules are due any shop activity that is not signed off with a grade will be marked as incomplete and will jeopardise the successful completion and therefore no credit will be awarded with discretion of the teacher special arrangement may be made in order to complete specific shop tasks 2 3 4 5 shop expectations 6 7 8 9 10 the shop facility its contents fellow students and teachers are to be treated with the respect and tolerance they deserve shop activities are to be performed on an individual basis however providing assistance to classmates in need is acceptable safety glasses and ppe clothing must be worn in the shop area at all times safety is of utmost importance and any disregard will result in removal from the shop area for a set period of time continued inappropriate behaviour will result in the removal from the course a zero tolerance for pushing shoving or any other form of physical contact b zero tolerance for verbal abuse including belittling another person in classroom or shop environment at no time will food or drink be allowed in the shop area 11 failure to comply with the outlined expectations and any additional rules and regulations put forth by the teacher may result in student dismissal from the course.

cts practical work grading scale the following table is used to grade each practical job the student assesses themselves on their work and then the teacher also provides a grade the teacher mark will be recorded on the report card value 9 description of skills demonstrated meets defined outcome using proper procedures while demonstrating superior leadership skills superior technical skills and has never forgotten to wear ppe meets defined outcome using proper procedures while demonstrating leadership skills above average technical skill and has never forgotten to wear ppe meets defined outcome working in a self directed manner with very limited assistance meets defined outcome with minimal assistance while following a guided plan of action meets defined outcome but requires assistance from others or has had time management problems throughout the module has not met the defined outcome due to a missed concept or procedure or has acted in an unsafe manner or has been off task repeatedly throughout the module has not met the defined outcome due to multiple errors or omissions observed or has created a significant safety risk has not met the defined outcome due to incompletion of project 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 not scorable the student has chosen to not attempt the job marking procedures · career and technology courses allow students to complete all assigned work to meet expected learner outcomes marks of zero will be placed in the teacher gradebook until the student completes the learning task for students who do not hand in the assigned work prior to last day of regular scheduled classes for the term or semester the zeros will remain in the calculation of their final marks · in the cts curriculum personal management skills ex positive attitude and behaviour being responsible and work safely and fundamental skills ex manage info think and solve problems communicate and use numbers must be demonstrated and meet expected learner outcomes as we prepare our students for the world of work · in addition lacombe composite high school cts dept has incorporated strategies of intervention for the success of all students please review the attached intervention document if any questions or concerns arise please feel free to contact me at:

fabrication technologies student safety pledge and permission form who is enrolled in fabrication will as a part for their learning experience operate equipment and tools provided that written consent by parental/guardian is given each student will be given proper instruction and correct safety procedures both in the use of equipment and tools before being allowed to work alone because each student must assume responsibility we ask that they subscribe to the following pledge 1 i will follow all safety rules as out lined by the teacher and as per machine safety handbook 2 i will only use an item tool or piece of equipment i have been instructed in its use 3 i will report all accidents or injuries immediately to the teacher 4 i will take care and be responsible for my own project work 5 i will not interfere with the learning or safety of my classmates 6 i will treat others in the class with the respect they deserve 7 i will respect the teacher s decisions made on my behalf i have read and understand the above guidelines for classroom expectations shop expectations and the seven pledge items listed date parents/guardians student signature i hereby give my consent to allow my child to operate all tools and equipment necessary to carry out the tasks related to this course i am also aware that safety is of greatest concern therefore classroom/shop misconduct is not tolerated and may lead to the expulsion of my daughter/son from the fabrication technologies course date parent/guardian s signature this document must be returned to the teacher by the student the following day

fab 1010 ­fabrication tools materials personal health and safety plan assignment objective you will create a health and safety plan specific to this course using the eight common elements of health and safety management you will also demonstrate the safe effective use of tools assigned to this course activity one create a scale drawing of the shop showing locations of all pieces of machinery and safety equipment this assignment is out of 3 marks see the following rubric for criteria not scorable student has not completed the task 1 student has left out multiple items in their drawing or the drawing is not scaled properly or is very hard to read 2 there is a missing item on the drawing but is scaled properly or drawing is hard to read 3 drawing is scaled correctly drawn with ruler is neat and all items are properly identified activity two describe three actions that you will do in this shop to demonstrate that you understand how to apply the eight common elements of a health and safety management plan this assignment is out of 3 marks see rubric for criteria common element management leadership hazard identification hazard control prevention worker competency work site inspection incident investigation emergency response evaluation maintenance not scorable student has not completed the task 1 student has little detail in their answer 2 student has shown understanding in more than half of the elements 3 student has shown clear understanding of their role in all elements three actions you could do daily to demonstrate understanding.

activity three complete the safety guidelines booklet and demonstrate competent usage of all the machines assigned student will complete the self check and then demonstrate use of the tool under direct supervision of the teacher the date will be recorded and the tool signed off by the student and teacher the student may then use the tool as needed without supervision but of course the student will strictly adhere to the safety guidelines while using it this assignment is out of 3 marks see the following rubric for criteria not scorable student has not completed the task 1 student has little understanding or confidence while demonstrating tool use or has shown improper use or shown unsafe use health safety plan /3 2 student has shown understanding of the tools but has made a safety error in their demonstration or the self check answers lack detail safety guidelines /3 3 student has shown clear understanding of all tools assigned and the safety precautions needed to operate the tools properly shop drawing /3 final grade /9
