first day as city councillor of ward 32 i m forever grateful to you for your relentless pavement-pounding for banging up signs and delivering brochures for hosting coffee parties for spreading the word to your friends and neighbours and for generously donating to the `mcmahon can campaign i wholeheartedly appreciate the faith you put in me when voting on election day it truly is an honour to represent our community at city hall thank you ward 32 it s been a year bursting with successes and challenges and it s been nothing if not rewarding here is a peek into the past 12 months mary-margaret mcmahon ward 32 councillor december 2010 it felt like grade 9 all over again as 14 new councillors and i marched into our orientation sessions at city hall arms laden with stacks of binders city staff was superbly welcoming and helpful we set up our office second floor b street if you wish to pop by started building our database please email us if you d like to be added and received 10,000 emails from transit city supporters the instant our email was hooked up we also began meeting with residents organizations and city departments i learned my standing committee assignments parks and environment that s a shocker the audit committee and the mayor s designate for waste diversion ontario i was thrilled to become a board member for young people s theatre applegrove community complex community centre 55 ted reeve arena and the toronto atmospheric fund i was also introduced to the four business improvement associations and one business association on which i d also sit as a board member can you say plunging in with both feet january 2011 we brought in the new year by greeting residents at local levees our first set of four councillor coffee talks was held at red rocket juice java the grinder and cake town cafe what a fabulous opportunity to simultaneously chat one-on-one with neighbours showcase local businesses and enjoy delish chai we endured intense yet informative marathon budget sessions and we questioned the ttc s plan for building a brand-spanking-new storage yard for the new 100-footlong lrvs at ashbridges bay we felt decentralizing was the way to go to ensure streetcars be closer to their starting routes for efficiency and cost-savings with a south-east-north-west storage lo cation unfortunately the site was already chosen by the previous council and despite our relentless attempts to find a way to re-open the discussion the contract for the removal of the contaminated soil was awarded and the project began we also met with the city legal team to discuss the terms and conditions of the boardwalk café lease they advised it was a solid contract supported by the previous council and was unable to be opened up we started to brainstorm ideas on how to make the best of that situation february 2011 development projects from the cont d on page 34 beach metro community news published by ward 9 understanding vandalism on a cool clear afternoon friday nov 4 we gathered at malvern collegiate for the unveiling of the renovated war memorial the excellent malvern choristers sang the band had great rhythm and there were speeches when the sculpture was unveiled i turned to my friend and said well how long before this statue is vandalized according to the newspapers approximately 31 hours in the mid 60s the figure was splashed with white paint in the mid 80s it was painted red and somewhere along the way it lost its arm and sword the renovation committee raised $44,000 for the refurbishment of the memorial what is the answer nobody knows what we do know is that no one is free from the `skeletons in our own closets we had several mottoes in our home think before you act west that literally `stole our waterfront thanks to the efforts of marymargaret and others future generations will be able to look back decades from now and appreciate their efforts in preserving a waterfront that provides public space and is not a massive commercial enterprise h bruce crofts like many ward 32 residents i like and respect our councillor mary-margaret mcmahon she is hard-working and relentlessly optimistic however given that this city is being torn apart by a blundering mayor with a harmful agenda that has virtually no support in our community it would be nice to read a already planning for next spring and so is the beach garden society which has put out a call for garden spotters to identify gardens that could be included in next year s garden tour gardens should be interesting but not necessarily professionally designed neither do they need to be large as sometimes a small garden has had to make use of limited space in a more creative way what we re looking for are gardens where people can get ideas they can adapt for their own space said sonia halloran chair of the garden tour committee so here is your opportunity to let others know about a special garden in your neighbourhood send an email to beachgs.ca@gmail.com include photos if you can the tour will take place next june should we honour the humble boardwalk would like to take this opportunity to say a few words on behalf of that beloved symbol of this area the boardwalk which has sturdily made its way along the east end of the waterfront ever since it was built in 1932 it is a warm and wonderful symbol of this blessed part of toronto and over the years it has served us well i believe it is high time we acknowledged its contribution to the life and the lore of this area having said that i know there are many people who share this sentiment i suggest that some formal recognition be given to that modest assemblage of wooden planks that is the personification of all that is good and unique to the beach i do not mean anything fancy or formal because i believe such ostentation would only embarrass that humble asset that has served us so uncomplainingly over the decades but perhaps there could be a boardwalk day during the summer when its contributions to the community would be formally acknowledged i leave it to nimbler minds than mine to advance this thought if indeed it strikes a responsive chord i sturdy gert i get a lot of inquiries about sturdy gert mccurdy and can only tell you that i will have some news about everybody s sweetheart very shortly i can tell you that her knuckles have been declared to be dangerous weapons and there is talk in legal circles to render them inoperable this suggestion has been widely approved in some circles but opposition quickly fades when the sturdy one starts waving them under the noses of those who favour the idea i will have more on the subject when the hospital s fracture ward resumes the practice of allowing visitors in to see their loved ones just one last note on sturdy before i pass on to other matters i have long thought that the full moniker for that young super star on the pittsburgh penguins was sidney the kidney in fact i used that term during the course of a recent chat with sturdy so imagine my surprise when she delivered a forearm wallop to my ear in the course of pointing out that in fact the proper name is sid the kid i plan on using that term as soon as the swelling in my head permits me to talk normally christmas decorations but on to matters of a local nature and once again i am hoping to see queen street merchants getting into the spirit of the season and start decorating their front windows with all manner of christmas decorations it s good for the streetscape and it is also good for the business people because i believe that is the sort of thing that attracts passersby into their premises and speaking of that sort of thing what do you get in the way of a christmas present for my daughter and her husband glenn who have recently acquired a handsome puppy that they have named ginger they already have a dog and as far as i know their household menagerie also includes at least one cat and several fish all of which are named eddie as near as i can tell it sounds like a hectic household but the couple seems to have everything under control so i am not going to worry which is just as well because they never pay me any heed under the best of circumstances that is pretty well it for now but i will be doing an in-depth examination of sturdy gert in my next www.beachesco-op.com i become a part of your child s preschool journey www.easttorontovillage.com register now for winter magine for a moment a student walking down the school hallway with a t-shirt on that says teachers are blankety blanks he or she would be sent down to the office and probably home faster than you can say repugnant and that is as it should be principals have the power to control what messages are displayed in school to some degree at any rate no one student should be able to advertise views that offend other students or teachers the criteria of offensiveness holds more weight in schools because they are closed environments all students must attend school by law they cannot simply walk away a school is a community with standards of behavior for its members consequently freedom of speech is curtailed more in the school environment than it is in society at large the example above is pretty cut and dry any message that is clearly racist homophobic sexist or personally insulting is easily spotted and easy to be definitive about not all issues of appropriateness in schools are quite so easy to peg down take a recent example in schools all over north america including my younger daughter s school students are showing up wearing bracelets that say i love boobies you can imagine the face of a teacher who sees that the first time the bracelets are sold by an american organization called keeping margaret hoogeveen is a local writer editor and mother of two school-aged daughters mhoogeveen@sympatico.ca abreast double entendre intended it was founded by breast cancer survivors who want to raise breast cancer awareness among youth it seems like a pretty authentic well-intentioned organization among other fundraising ventures they sell the bracelets to raise money which they pass along to worthy breast cancer-related causes but why are preteen boys and girls buying these bracelets hmm i would warrant that the goal might not be just to spread awareness about a disease some mischief-makers might like the idea of making their friends laugh at the audacity of wearing a word that most of them cannot say without turning red in the face `boobies is a word that just makes you want to laugh it s a silly word so the bracelets make the boys who wear them giggle we re talking pre-pubescent boys here not almost grown-up teens they re sweetly thrilled at their brush with naughtiness okay so the boys might have complicating reasons for buying and wearing the bracelets whatever their motives however i think that the bracelets actually serve their intended purpose every single girl or boy who wears one of these bracelets is more aware that breast cancer exists and is a threat and can be less fatal if caught early how many 11-year-olds do you know that are aware of breast cancer if these bracelets increase that number is it a bad thing the challenge for a principal therefore is complicated when it comes to freedom of speech the school shouldn t ban the bracelets based on criteria such as the purpose of the originating organization the value of the bracelets in raising awareness of a disease or their comic value these things don t really count if a publicly displayed message is actually offending people it s only the offensiveness factor that really counts so is the phrase `i love boobies offensive does it offend you personally i do not find it offensive and i think a lot of the boys and girls wearing these bracelets do feel seriously that they are supporting a worthy cause but a preteen girl who is a little more physically developed than her classmates may indeed feel uncomfortable about the whole thing so too might a female teacher especially if she suspects the gleeful laughter might be eroding respect for her as a teacher this is indeed a difficult issue and i wish the best to the principals having to make the decisions on this one previous columns can be accessed at margaret s blog http ·15 nov 29 2011 child 11/25/11 11:14 am page 1 tuesday november 29 2011 beach metro news 15 write on health expectations for our dogs have to be realistic a number of years ago i read an article written by a well-known local dog trainer at the time the article really caught dr nigel my attention and i still think of it often skinner basically the point of the article was to highlight some differences in behavior www.kewbeachvets.com that the author had noted in dogs on a trip she had made to europe and those which she saw here in toronto essentially the premise of the article was that maybe we had a tendency to `over manage our dogs and perhaps this might not be understood by our dogs in the way we intend that trainer was gillian ridgeway many beach residents will remember gillian s queen street store paws for thought which became the starting point for `who s walking who one of the largest and most well known dog training organizations around i have often recalled this article when i observe dogs both in my hospital and when i m at the beach or park with my own dog i sat down with gillian recently to discuss this and it was very interesting to hear her observations since that time we both have noticed a steady increase in the number of dogs presented for a variety of anxiety related behaviors separation anxiety and obsessive compulsive behaviors especially while there is certainly a great deal of genetics involved we see certain issues far more frequently in some breeds than others we both wonder if having unrealistic expectations of our pets is a contributing factor is the shift in how we relate to our pets creating an undue amount of stress and anxiety for them a great deal of emphasis has been placed in the last 10 to 20 years on the power and strength of the human animal bond a 2005 survey by ipsos reid found that 57 of families consider their pet a full member of the family and 26 consider their pet the baby of the family it is a wonderful thing that our pets contribute so much to our joy and enrich our lives to the extent that they do but have we crossed a line when we forget that cats and dogs while sharing and enriching our lives are not small furry people are we in fact despite our best intentions doing more harm than good forgetting that they have very unique needs behaviours and ways of understanding my own experience with this dilemma occurs as often at the dog park as it does at my clinic i see some owners who will simply not let their dogs play worrying that they just came from the groomers and will mess up their do or more commonly thinking normal play is too rambunctious and perhaps dangerous most new dog owners go through a period of alarm when they first see dogs at play off leash it can be a bit frightening to watch until you realize what normal play behavior looks like of course there are instances of inappropriate behavior and true aggression at the dog park fortunately though these are few and far between i see very few dog park injuries to be honest and the majority of those are sprains and strains and the odd torn nail or cut paw injuries sustained from other dogs that are inflicted deliberately are fortunately rare on the other hand just yesterday i saw a man throwing a ball for his dog to chase down the bike path good dog he exclaimed when the ball was chased down and retrieved ten seconds later the same dog was chasing a cyclist on the path bad dog he was told this time i couldn t help but think what must be going through this dog s mind i love chasing things my person is happy i love chasing things my person is mad i love chasing things should a dog be allowed to chase cyclists of course not has this dog been trained to a level where he can differentiate good chasing from bad and be trusted in that setting apparently not this was not a `bad dog just a normal dog who should a not have been off leash outside the fenced area no dogs should be and b been taught what things are inappropriate to chase this won t happen automatically and it certainly won t happen by trying to `reason with him as gillian says if you have very high expectations of your dog you had better be prepared to spend a significant amount of time working with them in the correct manner when i asked gillian what she thought constitutes a `minimum acceptable amount of obedience in a dog she had a very interesting point of view and separated `obedience dogs doing what they are told and `manners dogs knowing what to do without being told dogs with good manners know how to interact properly with other dogs and people they know not to rush out the door or to bark at everything that moves they know not to jump up and not to be a pest during a dinner party to teach a dog manners is all about being consistent and showing them what is expected without being angry at them cont d on page 24 leroux froebel bilingual school · programs for children 18 months to 12 years · early reading
