lady elizabeth junior school newsletter november 2011 year 1 visit terra natura year 1 and their teachers recently spent the day at terra natura in benidorm the trip was linked to their science topic of ourselves during the day they looked at the different types of animals and the way that they moved they had great fun watching the monkeys swing and the crocodile crawl they also used their five senses to find out about the different features of animals a great day was had by all this issue year 1 visit terra natura october 9 fiesta discovering planets p 1 p 1 p 2 victorian day p 2 foles dona on p 2 year 4 visit a roman workshop p 3 madrid p 3 halloween p 4 cambridge awards p 4 swimming gala p 5 measuring sandwich making early learning autumn in pre-nursery upcoming events p 5 p 5 p 6 p 6 p 7 october 9 fiesta they have enjoyed art and craft activities using the colours of the valencian flag to make and colour headbands important people such king jaume i horses the troops entering the city of valencia and the typical fruits of the time etc the children in pre-nursery 1 2 and eyfs have been learning a little bit about the history of the valencian community and the 9th october fiesta p.1

planets y5 pupils are studying the solar system as part of their science work to help understand the solar system and to compare the relative sizes of the planets they have been using a set of inflatable planets when they have completed the topic the inflatable planets will be displayed in the y5 corridor victorian day year 6 pupils recently experienced a very different school day when they time-travelled back to victorian times with their teachers everyone came suitably dressed and there was one large classroom with boys and girls sitting separately the day started with an inspection of hands and nails for cleanliness this was followed by prayers taken by the headmistress and lessons in sewing or technical drawing for girls and boys respectively all pupils chanted tables and spellings did arithmetic using pounds shillings and pence and learned about the british empire there was a drill session and playtime was spent on typically victorian pursuits such as hoops spinning tops and marbles the cane and dunces caps were much in evidence as the pupils experienced the strictness of a victorian classroom needless to say although the day was enjoyed by all everyone was relieved to return to normal the next day foles donation friends of lady elizabeth foles work tirelessly to raise money to provide extra equipment for both the junior and the senior schools this term they have already generously donated a number of items to the junior school which appeared on their wish list these include a dvd player for the multi-purpose room a cd player for the lower juniors a digital camera for foundation 2 a dolls pram duplo lego truck and 2 scooters for the foundation 1 2 playground an activity cube 2 toy shopping trolleys and money to buy torches etc for pre-nursery we are obviously very grateful to them for their continued support.

roman workshop the roman workshop has become a regular event for year 4 pupils from laude the lady elizabeth school who study the romans and their way of life as part of the national curriculum unit called invaders and settlers the team leader from the museo de alicante is paco and together with his team of young monitors we split into two groups for our workshop activities these included making mosaics a set of clay dice and a ceramic pendant holding a secret wish while the crafts were drying the children transformed into legionaries and were resplendent in full costume the soldiers each had a helmet sword and shield and practised assembling in the famous tortoise formation the battle commenced and the well-trained soldiers fought bravely and aggressively luckily there were no casualties after the battle it was time to relax at the arena we watched a fight between a retiarius and a secutor many other gladiator contests and finally a gladiator fight against paco himself who seemed very frightened of our brave gladiators and ran away all of the year 4 children enjoyed their day as romans and we will definitely return next year if possible madrid in the year 4 modern foreign language spanish class we have been learning about madrid the capital of spain the pupils have learned about some of the monuments such as la puerta de alcala the parks such as el retiro and other places of interest such as la puerta del sol and la plaza de toros de las ventas through photographs and videos also they have learned about the flag of madrid and its symbol el oso y el madroño to complete the work the pupils have worked together to make a mural which can be seen in the mfl classroom i hope that one day they will all be able to visit this wonderful city.

halloween halloween in the junior school is always an exciting event with pupils and teachers dressing-up in some very scary costumes this year was no exception and the effort put into some of the halloween outfits and the accompanying make-up was outstanding all year levels participated and the classrooms were full of witches skeletons zombies ghosts and other frightening creatures cambridge cer ficates the young learners english yle is a reliable and consistent measure of how well a child is doing in the skills of listening speaking and reading and writing tests are designed to make learning fun and children are encouraged by working towards certificates and earning the shields that record their progress there are three levels for children to work through starters movers and flyers with starters being the first aimed at young children with very basic skills as children develop and work their way up to the flyers certificate they reach a level that will enable them to aim for the key english test ket this year 9 children from year 6 entered the ket exam 7 of whom were delighted to be awarded merit which means they achieved 85 or above congratulations to everyone!

year 5 year 6 swimming gala this term all pupils in years 5 and 6 took part in an inter-house swimming gala the houses were expertly led by their captains aaron glencross marlborough house red juan ivars woburn house blue inés serrat longleat house yellow and olivier faine chatsworth house green the events varied from the highly skilled individual medley to fun relays all swimming strokes were performed including butterfly with some outstanding performances from amanda sykes olivier faine laura shearer victor gallego eleise devine carlotta braun natalie stanley jack richardson irene zapatero grace hopson lola alvarez thomas lawrence and floris and thomas schutte the competition was extremely close with the longleat house taking victory with 146 points well done to all those who took part it was a very exciting gala and is a promising start to the year sandwich making year 3 pupils have been busy making sandwiches as part of their design and technology work as you can see not only did they plan and make them but they enjoyed eating them too measurement year 2 pupils have been working on measurement they have enjoyed measuring many different things including their feet their height and their hand-spans they even brought potatoes in from home so that they could use a ruler to measure them and compare the sizes!

play­time for our youngest members of school autumn in prepre-nursery in pre-nursery 2 we have already started work we have met our dear mascot muma what fun it is to paint in yellow as we are now in autumn we are learning about the colour of the leaves during this season of the year yellow orange and brown look at our lovely tree!
