archery club assistant coach debra hendricks it all started when marshall himself had the idea to have an archery club for the students at shs after talking to the national wild turkey federation nwtf too competitive luke woolbright staff writter opinion that s she what said 11.18.11 he said every athlete wants and works for the same thing to win that s why we do that extra workout why we willingly give away hours of our free time and for some it s why we live and breathe however when you compromise your integrity simply to win that healthy competitive edge becomes too competitive some say that cheating is part of the athletic world while this holds true is that game you cheated to win going to mean as much to you compared to if you ran your butt off to make the winning goal although you may have won cheating i m not sure it s really a win at all you didn t play a true game talent vs talent and you are not a true athlete cheating shows that you didn t have what it took to put the work in at practice so you had to ensure a win how about when someone throws an elbow sure it s fine to nudge them to get them out of your way but when you are deliberately going into a game targeting someone to hurt it crosses the line of competitiveness this shows how weak you truly are and how little you believe in your own abilities one of the most outrageous displays of being too competitive is being a bad sport publicly humiliating yourself and your team because you lost is one of the most stupid things you could ever do saying that sarcastic remark under your breath or sitting on the ground crying will not change the outcome of what happened sure the game or the race meant a lot to you but go cry in the locker room go complain about how unfair it was to your own team then use that motivation to win next time making a fool of yourself in front of your opponent confirms your loss and shows submission next time before you play a sport think about what it might really cost you in the end to win there is only one measure that is too competitive taking anabolic steroids short of destroying your own body with an illegal substance i will tell you to shut up if you are a big enough wuss to complain that someone is being too competitive i hate the patriots i mean i really hate them but how can you not respect what they have done you are a blithering idiot if you think tom brady is as good as peyton manning yet brady has three championship rings because billichek cheated i m okay with that though if the colts had done the same things i as a colts fan would be overjoyed and glad my team had a good competitive coach all i m saying is if you play football and you can steal another team s playbook if you play baseball and you have someone in the 15th row tipping you off every pitch if you can get away with a massive injury inducing foul while the refs are not looking during a basketball game or if you can take any measure to get inside of your opponent s head then more power to you the night before i throw in a meet i facebook search the closest throwers to me in terms of distance because i want to know the names of their mothers and girlfriends and gauge their confidence levels from their self written bios at the meet i might talk to them about technique and what they commonly do wrong and then talk about the mechanics of their error until they over think it and screw it up if they cannot handle pressure then all we talk about is the importance of the meet the best case scenario is they have anger issues that they cannot control and will perform terribly when angry in which case we talk about their mom and girlfriend getting inside of your opponent s brain is part of sports if you can t handle these things then do not play what is one way you can be too competitive logan trowbridge staff writer if someone isn t very good at a sport and you yell at them and say they put the team down abigail tennyson 9 getting into a fight trevor combs 10 i way too far it is no secret that there are blocked sites here at shs the authority doesn t want students looking up vulgar websites they don t want students looking up anything that is going to distract them from their work period it is understandable but some students aren t that understanding what happens when a student tries to look up something for a project that has to be done at school and all the informational sites are blocked it becomes a challenge it is even more difficult when the topic is so limited that one has to search the internet with a fine-tooth comb when a student can t find what a teacher wants about a topic odds are the student won t do the project due to lack of resources it may come as a shock to people but some students don t even own a computer at home when a student tells a teacher this they will most likely suggest to use a friend s or go to the local library what is the point in that if the teacher gives students time to work on the project in class class work shouldn t be homework just because one can t get on a decent site to find information let s be honest complaining won t get people very far in the world instead of complaining about blocked sites and not doing anything about it students should tell their teachers about it maybe the teachers can solve this problem and tell the techs that they need an educational site unblocked they will most likely unblock it a few weeks ago teachertube.com was blocked and now it is not due to the help of students and teachers students should quit complaining and figure out a solution to the problems involving blocked websites.

11.18.11 opinion 3 ha y ley 2 opinion columnist haley beckwith staff editorial family schmucking up your thanksgiving thanksgiving is a bittersweet holiday there are the pros the family the food the football and more and then there are the cons the loud annoying obnoxious cons we all have the cons the family member we cannot stand it poses a question of whether thanksgiving is completely worth it and as students we are not even old enough to have in-laws yet when you have to put up with these people year after year you eventually ask yourself is thanksgiving really worth it the area of annoyance is the people in question of social acceptance they come in all shapes and sizes from anorexic to fat from know-it-all to idiot status and from gnome size to ogre height they all have different tendencies there is the lady who has to broadcast her petty problems to the entire room when they are not that big of a deal and it s thanksgiving for crying out loud no one cares there is the blatant racist who is stuck 20 years in the past that makes you want to slap him across the face for his arrogance you get the story tellers these people usually come in pairs constantly trying to one up each other with their the fish was this big stories then there is the new boyfriend that s always great some guy dating your cousin expecting you to like them while they either try to sound impressive or hang all over your cousin the know-it-all schmucks who have to add on to correct every statement you make and the list goes on and on and on however then you have the people you like the grandparents you love and admire the cute little kids running around and cousins that you have grown up with and get to catch up with there is football on tv usually classic nfl rivalries taking place the food is the most delicious and wholesome meal you will get all year it is just the dreaded conversation from the completely socially unacceptable people you cannot avoid the people who make you dread every family gathering you attend these unacceptable people are in every family and if you think your family does not have one of these people spoiler alert it s you however the spirit of the holiday is thankfulness so be thankful for the family that is acceptable be thankful for the food and be thankful you do not have to put up with the morons that no one can stand every day happy holidays from the booster as many know the school has recently spent close to 1.3 million dollars on renovating meyer gym for the basketball teams and fans basketball is the main sport in indiana and brings in the most fans but that does not mean that scottsburg should forget about the other 16 sports that our high school provides each sport does get a set amount of money from the school for uniforms or ect but they do not get anywhere close to a million dollars some sports such as the swim teams the golf teams and the softball team do not even have a practice facility on school property and have to travel to even go to practice other teams have problems that do not cost near as much as the million dollars for a new floor many records such as the boys and girls swim team records the boys and girls track unfairness is given towards other sport teams records and the girls cross country records have not been updated since 2009 these athletes have all worked hard to break the previous records yet the school has not paid the few dollars to give them the recognition that they deserve another major problem is the nonexistent lighting of the soccer field earlier this year the jv soccer team had to cancel many of their home games because it was too dark for them to play some of the times the team would get to start playing and only play half of the game before it got too dark this was upsetting for many of the players fans and parents because they hardly got to play on their home field when the varsity warrior cup was played this year the championship game had to stop nine minutes early the warrior cup brought many fans teams and money to our school staff editorial but our school could not even provide them the lighting that they needed to see to play the game this is again unfair to the athletes fans and parents another thing that the janitors want to accomplish is painting the locker rooms it is going to be additional money to do this but some of the other sports that scottsburg offers do not have locker rooms for theirselves most of the teams such as the girls and boys track boys and girls cross-county boys and girls tennis softball and soccer team do not have a place to change often times their own cars get turned into a dressing room the booster does not think that there is a problem with helping out the schools sports teams but if the school has that kind of money to give to one single team they should also fix the minor problems of the other sports bullying is down right retarded it comes in all shapes and sizes and quite honestly it is the gayest thing i have ever seen in my life there is no excuse for wrong behavior sometimes i wish i could stoop to their level and tell them how jewish they are really being yeah that will definitely show those pollocks unfortunately some of you may have found absolutely nothing wrong with that paragraph i hope at least one reader was as appalled seeing that as i felt writing it as i am sure most of you assumed i was not talking about people with delayed development homosexuals or anyone of the jewish faith or of polish decent in fact you did not have to use your context clues to know exactly what i was saying if i were to count how many times i heard a minority used as a derogative adjective just in the hallways i would quickly lose count and the worst part of that is the fact that it is become all too socially acceptable as kids we were always taught to do the right thing if our parents weren t showing us how our elementry teachers did their best to get the job done what would you do if you saw someone put another person down because of their mental handicap sexuality religion heritage or anything else shouldn t we try and do our best to make them proud if that s the case why do i hear people who would never do anything to hurt another person verbally put people down everyday i promise you can go through your whole life avoiding the use of adjectives such as retarded gay jewish and others as such negative terms as a generation what are we thinking making that misuse of language socially acceptable i am not going to pretend like i am so high and mighty and anyone who works these adjectives in their language everyday deserves to have their fingers cut off and put into a blender i personally would have run out of fingers by now all i am hoping to accomplish is that one other person will think about what they say and who they might put down with it think before you speak and as for putting people down with your adjectives knock it off it s not hard to work on what you re saying bullying is down right immature it comes in all shapes and sizes and quite honestly it is the most ridiculous thing i have ever seen in my life there is no excuse for mistreating another person sometimes i wish i could stoop to their level and tell them how rude mean and down right awful they are really being yeah that will definitely show those jerks.

11.18.11 features black friday bailey couch editor-in-chief 5 exploring options creates opportunities in a time where there are so many options for choosing a college it is sometimes difficult to know what type of college would be best for you it is in situations like these that knowing what different types of colleges are out there and what they can offer you can be highly beneficial the first type of school that you could look at is a four-year college or university these are the schools that you typically would think of when people talk about going to college most four year schools give the student a well rounded education with a major in one specific area to receive a bachelor s degree after four years for your first two years you will study general subjects that are not necessarily specific to your area of study this is the part of your education that makes you well rounded giving you a general knowledge of many subjects for someone who doesn t really know what they want to major in this can be a great way to help you make a decision generally after your second year you will begin taking classes that are more major specific according to collegeboard.com four year schools will generally have tons of majors this is great for keeping your options open if you decide to change majors after you start school many of these four year schools are private schools this means that they do not receive government funding like public colleges and universities do due to this often tuition for these schools is much higher than the majority of public schools public schools are generally larger than the majority of private schools and not religiously affiliated while some private schools are religious not all are the second type of college would be two-year community colleges these schools prepare their students with career training or prep for a four year school granting them an associate s degree most of the time these schools have smaller class sizes and the tuition is much lower than four year schools they receive funding so this helps keep tuition down this makes these schools more affordable especially for in-state students community colleges offer many degrees but often not as much variety as four year schools due to size and other factors there are also trade and technical schools these schools offer direct career training there are no general studies just classes pertaining to the career field you are entering these schools generally offer great opportunities for students who know they want to go into a specified field trade schools are a dangerous option if a student is questioning the field they want to enter since there is not always a lot of options at these schools switching is not always an option if you choose to go this type of school you should be 100 percent sure it s the field you want for many students this can be a very stressful process knowing your options and what you are looking for can make all the difference in release of call of duty modern warfare 3 activision sold 10 million copies in the first day call of duty black ops sold nearly 4.5 million and roughly 10 million within the first week modern warfare 3 mw3 is now known for the biggest industry launch ever so what exactly makes this game so popular is it the rush of online game play the all new campaign mode or is the popularity from a fan base basis in my opinion all the above mw3 has an epically intense online mode a sick campaign and clearly 10 million people are fans that waited for the franchise to release ironically on my birthday 11-8-11 everyone has opinions and i ve heard a lot people say it s too similar to modern warfare 2 and it s just a software update on steroids and others say it s the most epic game ever in a way mw3 seems to be a mix of modern warfare 2 and black ops with similar game play and game modes new to call of duty modern warfare arts entertainment 7 michelle on film disclaimer there may be spoilers sequels will copies in the first week if it happens the call of duty franchise will have sold over 100 million games this generation.on nov 9 2011 activision announced a new call of duty is already set to release in 2012 jack and jill went to the big screen to make you laugh maddie collins copy editor when it comes to comedies there is a fine line between what is actually funny and what is just plain dumb in the new movie jack and jill adam sandler dances on that line the entire movie jack and jill starts off promising jack saldelstein sandler picks up his twin sister also sandler at the airport to spend the holidays with him and his family the twins fight and make everyone in the movie miserable while they make viewers laugh as the movie goes on they continue to get themselves in all kinds of peculiar situations the movie starts off with a hilarious first couple of minutes but it slowly begins to indicate that it will have no plot even without a plot there are few redeeming moments in jack and jill the movie includes many well known stars such as al pacino katie holmes david spade johnny depp and adam sandler himself it even has a cute resolution that is sure to warm your heart jack and jill seemed like it was created from all the funny ideas that never worked out in a movie before this is not necessarily a bad thing you just have to have the right type of humor to enjoy it if you re the type of person who would trade in a good plot for mindless jokes this movie is a must see seeing that i am that type of person i give jack and jill four out of five stars what do you think about movies coming out in parts hyeree ellis copy editor two movies are better than one michelle amburgey a&e editor i think it s awe i don t really like some because it s it because you like a cliff hanger don t get the full cody caudill 9 effect saydie bowyer 10 i don t like it i like them but they d be too because it makes long and people me want to go don t want to back and watch watch a four the rest hour long movie bri stidham 12 alan contreras 11 the key to being a successful director in hollywood is to make the audience anxious for their upcoming projects what better way to do that than split a movie into two parts like the piece itself opinions can be split into two about this situation what is the point in all of this how does it make the audience feel i must ask this does it affect you this idea is actually pretty genius the thing is i wish it happened to more movies this seems to only be happening to books adapted into movies the two famous book adaptations would obviously have to be the harry potter and twilight series these two are obviously near and dear to people s hearts especially harry potter the franchise ended this year having been going on since 2001 the last book of the series harry potter and the deathly hallows is a pretty long book almost 800 pages to be exact that also goes for stephenie meyer s breaking dawn these books are jam packed with friendship romance and action packed fight sequences mak ing a single full length movie would be impossible and very long and boring who wants to sit through a three to four hour movie at the least another reason for splitting the last of the series in two is to build anticipation we all know the good stuff happens at the end so why not put the boring stuff in the beginning and put the exciting things in the middle to the end according to imdb.com harry potter and the deathly hallows part 1 received a 7.6 rating and harry potter and the deathly hallows part 2 got an 8.6 that just goes to show that part two is slightly better than part one just because part 2 has more things happening splitting movies into two parts is a pretty good idea and it is not stopping at harry potter and twilight famous director peter jackson has been working on the hobbit which will also be in made into two parts but for harry potter and twilight fans don t want to see the franchise end so why not drag it out as long as possible overall i would give splitting movies into parts a 7.5 i am here today to discuss a controversial topic involving cinema sequels sequels aren t particularly part twos they can be part threes or even fours prequels and remakes can also fit into this category now i am on the fence about sequels i have seen some pretty good ones but i also have seen some awful ones so awful i either turn off the tv or i fall asleep one of my favorite sequels would definitely have to be terminator 2 judgment day it is hard to follow up to a classic like terminator but i have to give james cameron props for making such a good sequel now terminator 3 rise of the machines +shouldn t even have happened that also goes for dumb and dumberer when harry met lloyd they just weren t good and should be wiped off the face of the earth a lot of people are a fan of grease i myself always have to watch it when i see it on tv i own the soundtrack and everything when i ask people if they have seen or like grease 2 then the gloves come out i like both films i think they both offer good music and decent stories but i have to stick with my guns and say that the original is the best but the sequel isn t that awful there are some good sequels out there you just need an open mind and some courage to decide to watch them some of my favorite sequels would have to be predator 2 evil dead ii x2 x-men united aliens the texas chainsaw massacre 2 and so many more sometimes sequels are better than the original for instance mean girls people refuse to believe there is a sequel you can t replace the plastics take the original texas chainsaw massacre i couldn t sit through it if you like excessive screaming all the way through then this movie is for you but it is not for me i ll take any other leatherface movie but do not suggest this one to me of course there has to be a terrible sequel for me the most absolutely terrible sequel and franchise i might add would have to the hellraiser movies part one was alright but it isn t something to brag about they just kept getting worse after that it is so sad and they just won t stop coming trust me do not watch any of these movies to me i think there are more better sequels than there are bad ones i think the rush hour franchise got funnier as more movies came out and we all know the dark knight was a pretty great film so don t be afraid of sequels they will not bite some of them might suck but that s hollywood for you.

premieres they re a lot of fun especially with friends but sometimes they aren t that great on school nights said logan lamar 11 while having school the next day actually a few hours later to be exact might be a total buzz kill there are ways to make the best of a midnight premiere on a school night first get your homework done whether it s as soon as you get home or in class there is no point in procrastinating you aren t going to want to do it when you re excitedly waiting for your friends to pick you up and more so you won t even look at it when you get home at 2 a.m secondly if you have time take a nap there is nothing worse than paying for a movie only to sleep half way through it plus it could save you a little bit of regret the next day in class the only thing i don t like [about midnight premieres is that i m always tired the next day said amber mcclain 9 another idea to keep in thought is to plan out all the little details beforehand figure out who s driving what quick tips to help you successfully prepare for a midnight premiere your homework done beforehand so you ll have no worries the movies early sure a seat -beat the crowd get to -pre-order tickets to en -get -bring friends that will love the movie as much as you will time everyone s supposed to meet and leave and which theater you ll be attending this will save a lot of last minute stress if the movie you re planning to watch is a popular showing planning to get there a bit early is also a good idea this will save you from standing in long lines or even possibly missing the beginning of the movie show up at least an hour before it s very important you are not in the back of the line explained conner nott 10 ordering tickets online beforehand can also be helpful because there is nothing worse than arriving for a movie to find it s sold out if you are a die-hard fan make sure -dress up make the most of your experience everyone loves a crazy fan -get plenty of sleep you have the best outfit at the premiere it not only adds to the magic but it may also help you get a free ride to the front of the line fans love when other fans dress up so much so they are willing to let you cut in front of them it s a lot of fun to go to a big midnight premiere to see some of the crazy fans one time some old man was dressed up as a super hero when green lantern was playing said lamar last but not least team looks to perform well this season six year veteran coach jason carter has been getting the girls into swim shape in the past weeks of practice at practice we have been doing lots of mileage at first to get stamina then lots of specialized workouts according to the strokes you swim to get the technique said mollie collins 10 after the loss of some key senior swimmers from last year though the girls are going to have to step it up so that they can continue to dominate in conference these girls have been leaning on last years seniors for a big part of the scoring that the team has done in years past the girls are going to have to realize that they can do it to step up and dedicate their time to becoming stronger and faster said carter one other challenge that the girls will be facing this season as well as the boys is low numbers there are only nine girls currently on the team it s going to be really tough with just nine people this year said sami voyles 10 the girls first start their homework this goes all right until the next morning when it almost takes water being dumped on their heads to get them out of bed then once at school they doze off during class well i do not effectively prioritize and manage my time therefore i am always sleepy and so i strategically sleep during school hours where time management is unnecessary said tony gentile 12 in high school it becomes very hard to prioritize and have good time management when there s already so much to do between homework personal time and family it is hard to get to bed at a decent hour when a sport is added to the schedule and sometimes it s even past three in the morning until the zzzz s finally start setting in some sports do call for more dedication than others but a big problem with some athletes managing their time is deciding which priorities come first a lot of the time school comes last on the list of things to do which impacts the athlete s grades to a great extent most of the time though sleep comes last which often drops the athlete s grades as well schoolwork basketball and chores come first sleep comes when everything else is done i ll sleep when it s done said katie wampler 11 all students need sleep but especially athletes athletes use a lot of their stocked up energy that is stored away by sleep according to sportsmedicine.com for endurance athletes the main source of their energy comes from glucose and glycogen sleep deprived athletes experience slower storage of these sleep deprivation has many negative effects physically and mentally athletes cardiovascular performance actually drops 11 percent according to peak performance information may also be disrupted or forgotten such as a coach giving instructions to do something and the athlete forget ting to carry it out many regions of your brain can actually be harmed by lack of shut-eye one part that is said to be most at risk is the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for complex thinking the reason it is so important to prioritize is because if an athlete becomes too deprived of sleep their grades may slip by losing focus in class their performance and motivation will worsen their attitude will change and even personal things will be affected such as friendships some things that can be done to help athletes get enough rest in their schedule are perform a warm-up and recovery before and after every workout take a day off every once in a while do homework before having free time and make a set time to go to bed i ve learned to space out my assignments this year i don t wait until the last minute this year because with seven periods the work piles up really quickly said kelsie collins 11.

coach tyson skinner the winning tradition that coach skinner left was passed to coach patrick mendez who was hired to replace skinner mendez having 12 years of experience under his belt took over the team well and kept them on track however even mendez had to agree that it was hard to start out and they did not do so great mendez is now entering his second season at the head of scottsburg high school s wrestling team this year s team only has to recover from the loss of one senior while they take on eight freshmen the team has also acquired a new assistant coach vince schroeder who according to mendez has a lot of technique and knows what he is doing it s going to be a totally different year than last year said mendez all eight of the incoming freshman already have some form of wrestling background and they will give the team depth and youth they have not had in years past the team is also gifted with experience as it has three returning seniors gage kelly caleb cole and wes johanningsmeir after ending last year s season with a losing record the warriors look to rebuild and reload this year and some of the players think johanningsmeir is a key factor i think he is the best thing to happen to the burg he knows what he is talking about and doesn t just teach basketball but life lessons said caleb lykins 12 the team is working hard in the pre-season and hoping to adjust well to johanningsmeir s fast paced style of play many of their practices have been held out on the track where varsity players are expected to run a six minute mile and in the weight room even though it has been a lot of hard work the boys expect it to pay off soon i m looking forward to winning and getting scottsburg basketball back on track said gabe elam 11 the boys had their scrimmage game on nov 12 against the bedford north lawrence stars they lost the game with a final score of 57-30 but still showed improvement from last season they pressed nearly the whole game and scored many 11.18.11 girls basketball luke woolbright staff writer sports 11 last year s sectional serves as motivation for team as the girls basketball team enters its third season since cheatham s return they have high hopes moving forward the team is led by senior symantha norton junior standout katie wampler and a very talented squad with depth as their only issue with lack of depth in mind cheatham said we are young so i look for us to have a slow start but also to have a strong finish this team is loaded talent we are just low on varsity depth we have six varsity players and it would be better if we could get eight or nine the team does need some younger members to step up but for now the team moves on with six varsity players in place eager to avenge the end to last year s season when the team blew an 18 point lead in the sectional final game if that experience doesn t help them then there is not much i can do because that was the type of game that when you lost it if you are a true athlete it makes you more determined and more fired up all season long cheatham explained moving forward this season norton mainly just wants to see hard work from her team saying i expect to see them work hard win big and put it all out there on the line we each have four years to play and after that we are done i want to see my teammates make the most of it and have no regrets the team is no more shortage of talent than motivation but according to cheatham it is talent that needs work according to her it is young talent that will mature and develop over the course of the season in order to have a successful postseason cheatham s take on the team s talent was on paper i think this team has the talent to get to semi-state and who knows what happens up there but that is on paper we have a lot of maturing to do mentally and emotionally but they have the kind of talent and if we stay healthy we could advance that far with last years sectional disaster all too fresh in their minds the sky is the limit for this year s warriorettes team if they can keep their heads on their shoulders and handle business look for this year s team to grow together throughout the year and finish strong at maddie collins copy editor some people think that sports mean everything they are convinced that the way they eat or make decisions can affect an aspect in their sport in this case athletes are willing to sacrifice something in their lives to maybe but not certainly perform well in their sport sacrifices can come in many different forms whether it s refusing to eat something or refusing to shave something giving something up for a sport can be hard to do on the girl s swim team seven of the ten members will not shave their legs until sectional which is four months from now i don t shave my legs because it creates drag said sami voyles 10 then when you shave it makes you faster stephanie valencia staff writer this may seem odd or even gross to a normal person but this is just a small aspect that girls swimmers sacrifice to excel in their sport it s no shave november anyway said voyles i don t even notice it unless i look down swimming is not the only sport where you can sacrifice something to get ahead i ve had to not eat all day before a meet and run till i collapsed and couldn t go an anymore said wes deal 12 about losing weight for wrestling staying in a certain weight class can often be a struggle for wrestlers for the duration of their season to some people eating less and working out more would not be worth it for a sport but athletes that are dedicated to their sport will fight to win it is most definitely worth it said deal the cheer of the crowd and the pride you feel in a victory and also the honor you feel fighting for what you think is important is every bit worth the sacrifice while some drastic changes need to be made in an athlete s everyday actions some sports require a large change in the athlete s diet a number of the members of the girl s basketball team are giving up caffeine completely `it does really help a lot said kelsey smith 10 it makes you quicker every little thing counts your dedication to your sport will determine how much or what you are willing to give up if winning is all you want most athletes will consent to give up almost anything sacrificing something shows your dedication and love for your sport said smith
