about us www.barony.ac.uk barony college specialises in vocational training and education for the land-based and animal care industries our highly qualified staff modern facilities stimulating curriculum and training programmes are here to benefit all our college estate supports dairy beef sheep cereals trout and red deer enterprises commercial activities also take place within our forestry and horticulture sections this enables us to provide students with hands on training in a real working environment the facilities on campus provide an ideal training environment for all subjects the most recent was the development of our dairy technology centre this has created a new training facility which incorporates the latest animal welfare designs and management systems as well as maximising the use of available technology with the unique feature of a robotic milking system this latest development adds to the extensive facilities including the scottish forestry industry technology centre which houses a state-of-the-art forwarder and harvester simulator a walled garden with greenhouses polythene tunnels and nursery stock beds an animal care centre providing housing and working areas for small animals an operating theatre and x-ray facilities an outdoor riding arena exercise area and stable block for the equine section a commercial trout farm with hatchery producing around 25 tonnes of fish per annum and a well equipped engineering workshop all providing an ideal training environment our college website www.barony.ac.uk provides additional details on all of our courses 02 www.barony.ac.uk

barony college is set within a working 260 hectare estate which is situated in the rolling landscape of dumfries and galloway in beautiful south west scotland this is a region rich in historical cultural and natural heritage its rolling landscapes of forests and woodlands hills moorland unpolluted freshwater lochs rivers and stunning coastline all support an abundance of plants and wildlife the productive pastures of the region sustain a thriving farming community with a predominance of dairy beef and sheep production the forests and woodlands of the area are a rich source of timber and also provide a range of recreational opportunities for walkers cyclists and nature lovers the region s main town dumfries is situated on the banks of the river nith and is only 10 miles from the college it is a bustling market town with an excellent shopping centre and a variety of pubs clubs sports centres swimming pool and an ice rink it is also home to the region s senior league football club queen of the south www.barony.ac.uk 03

entry prospectus application interview enrolment www.barony.ac.uk entry having selected your course or area of interest complete the application form in the centre of this prospectus giving as much information about yourself as possible when we receive this we will send you an acknowledgement this will usually be followed where practical by an invitation to an interview and an opportunity to see the campus where you can see our facilities and talk to a subject expert who will be able to offer advice about suitable courses and training schemes appropriate to your aims the college is a member of the ucas system all applications for hnc and hnd courses are ultimately processed through ucas including those made directly to us in the first instance funding students attending a full-time course which leads to a qualification up to but not including higher national certificate may be eligible for a bursary and/or an education maintenance allowance funding application forms are automatically issued to all students who have accepted a full offer of a place on a qualifying course a student guide providing further information is also issued at this time students attending a course at higher national certificate hnc or higher national diploma hnd level and domiciled in scotland may be eligible to help from the student awards agency for scotland saas uk students resident outside scotland must apply to their local education authority lea for awards the amount of support available will depend on a number of factors including a student s age personal/financial circumstances and the mode of study ie full-time part-time or distance learning full-time students domiciled in scotland will not have to pay when studying at a scottish institution saas will cover the cost of tuition fees for eligible higher education students level of courses available whatever your requirements we can deliver the level of course to suit you from access and level 1 qualifications through to hnd which can give you direct access to degree courses at some universities levels of courses and qualifications will vary in different subject areas if you decide to undertake a work-based qualification we can offer either a level 2 svq nvq or a level 3/modern apprenticeship some of the courses also offer distance learning to suit the individual progression to entry college prospectus 06 www.barony.ac.uk application form interview enrolment

links partnerships other colleges and universities barony college is currently exploring a merger with elmwood college oatridge college and sac if successful this will create a single specialist college for land based education and training in scotland barony college is also in partnership with other colleges for course delivery in certain areas including for example reid kerr college many students who successfully complete a course with us progress to higher level courses with other providers of education and training barony college became an associate college of sac in 1997 sac is scotland s specialist higher education institution for the land-based sectors and is associated with the universities of edinburgh and glasgow graduates are awarded their degrees by one of these universities depending on which course they have studied many courses available at sac complement those offered by barony providing obvious progression routes from hnc up to honours degrees and postgraduate level we also have close links with other providers of higher education throughout the uk which provide further opportunities for progression we have also developed links with other colleges in europe which allow us to arrange exchange visits for students industry industry advisory groups within the college ensure that the training and education delivered is to industry standard and that it is continually being updated to meet changing industry needs barony college has succeeded in securing mutually beneficial links with various employers within the industries it supports our contacts with these employers provide opportunities for our successful students to gain employment within their chosen careers www.barony.ac.uk 09

agriculture www.barony.ac.uk/agriculture about us barony college has some of the best training facilities for agriculture in scotland with a fully commercial 260 hectare farm forming part of the college s extensive campus the farm s operational activities are integrated into the training programmes offered providing you with hands-on experience of modern farming methods and practice barony college prides itself in being the only educational facility in scotland to provide practical dairy education and training being able to offer a large range of farm enterprises to positively contribute to your learning experience you will work with our large herd of pedigree holstein friesian cows calving heifers young stock followers flock of breeding ewes expanding herd of aberdeen angus suckler cows and our red deer venison production unit in addition you will be involved in our varied grassland production and arable cropping operations our dairy technology centre provides you with an exciting opportunity to gain practical experience in a high animal welfare unit the most technologically advanced dairy unit to be found in any uk agricultural college the centre provides a unique resource for you to adopt a `learning by doing approach to your studies the dairy technology centre is equipped with the latest milking and herd management technology including a voluntary robotic milking unit a large herringbone parlour and automated cow handling system there are a number of exciting ongoing projects and developing industry partnerships within agriculture at barony such as commercial nutritional trials on livestock new approaches to calf rearing novel animal breeding programmes and experimental meat production systems our courses are designed to meet industry recognised requirements for people with both practical skills and knowledge who are capable of adapting and embracing new technologies and techniques for a rewarding career in agriculture berverley whitfield beverley whitfield from carlisle joined barony college in 2010 gaining direct entry into the hnc in agriculture previously she had studied animal management but wished to further her agricultural knowledge having grown up on a farm she was keen to gain a wider knowledge in agriculture rather than just beef finishing the enterprise of the family farm beverley said barony had the perfect combination of a friendly atmosphere knowledgeable course tutors and up-to-date facilities that promised an enjoyable and fulfilling year ahead the hnc gave me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and experience and help me understand changes that need to be considered in the industry i feel that studying the hnc in agriculture has opened many doors for me in the way of career and job opportunities beverley is now a trainee dairy technologist for first milk she attends a college in blocks and spends the rest of her time in placement at a creamery agriculture course structure entry employment progression to employment from any of nc/svq2/svq3 nc agriculture svq2 agriculture hnc agriculture svq3 ma hnd and degree in agriculture 10 www.barony.ac.uk
