www.westernweekender.com.au local news t he australian army is rarely in the fore of society s consciousness but recent events including the passing of st clair soldier lance corporal luke gavin and the controversial decision to allow women on the front line have placed the army in the media spotlight but it is often a case of out of sight out of mind the australian army appears to be an intangible force that takes the form of mortality rates and political debates what is the life of a solider really like who are the faces and personalities behind the khaki uniforms that we send willingly into danger the weekender decided that the only way to answer these questions was to become soldiers ourselves that s where i come in [pictured on sunday i along with our photographer melinda jenkins met squadron leader fleur james we swapped our civilian clothes for army cams stocked up on water and climbed onto a big green truck that took us to the heart of holsworthy army barracks our first stop was the rifle range simulator which all soldiers are trained at in a multitude of combat weapons handguns rifles grenade launchers and mounted helicopter guns soldiers from the reservists engineers unit were on hand to show us how to dismantle and clean weapons share their tales of overseas operations and educate us in some of the gruelling exercises soldiers practice for their fitness tests `killer mcgrath told us how he was in afghanistan constructing a national highway and other soldiers had served in africa east timor somalia and iraq a real eye-opener was the weight of the packs that frontline soldiers must carry 40kg of food ammunition blankets and water enough to last five days the highlight of the day was being taught to shoot the standard issue rifle a f88 austeyr assault rifle on the live fi ring range despite having the rifle tucked into my shoulder it did not feel like i was fi ring a live weapon continued page 8 the western weekender friday november 18 2011 shop 3/552 high st penrith for appointments phone 4721 2727 lip and chin spray tans simply smooth signature facial $20 $20 $49 full arms chest and stomach lower legs plus knee $105 1029wwd5231 $105 $119 3

www.westernweekender.com.au opinion from the editor s desk troy dodds earned cash hoping to get the feature getting it is our high it s our drug i have spent hundreds of dollars in a sitting waiting for the feature sometimes winning only $20 or so for my toil how stupid is that ask any pokie player and they ve lived out that scenario over and over again never learning their lesson from the last time there is a battle going on in the minds of all pokie players in australia right now th is battle is the hunger for the feature so why are they debating the introduction of a costly and problematic pre-commitment card why are they talking about a $1 maximum bet which means you can still blow a week s wages quite easily in a matter of hours why are they talking about slowing the spins down which means the player will still blow everything they have they ll just take twice as long to do it why are they talking about reducing the jackpot meaning you will still spend just as much money hoping to win it only to get half as much when you do why don t politicians look at why pokies are addictive in the fi rst place no one is addicted until the fi rst time they get the feature and from there it s a thirst to keep getting it my suggestion is based on experience anxiety lost money lost sleep guilt disgust even tears to prove it i went to all my local pubs and clubs and asked five questions of actual pokie players i was asked to leave four of these venues by staff i interviewed 202 players over four days a lot initially said they only spend the occasional $20 note later i would get the truth many opened up i saw the shame anger sadness frustration sense of loss and disillusionment in their eyes i felt the same once the results were not surprising but troy.dodds@mediaview.com.au emphatic 84 per cent agreed that the feature was the most addictive component and the main reason they played 90 per cent said they regularly felt like they were waiting for the feature during game play 83 per cent said that removing the feature would make the machines less addictive these were actual players not grandmothers answering a phone survey because they had nothing better to do i forwarded my results to andrew wilkie s assistant i got a response that said my results and suggestions were interesting but don t hold your breath for a response from andrew as he s a busy guy i rang minister jenny macklin s office twice her assistant was also interested in my results but no one got back to me i tried my local member no reply the gambling department of sydney university nothing what about senator nick xenophon s office nope i rang back 2ue and they told me their listeners wouldn t be interested i don t want my children pre-committing to bet a certain amount i want them to play less addictive machines or none at all the feature is to a poker machine what caffeine is to coffee so why are we not removing what is on them to addict you the caffeine is the feature instead the politicians are debating how much milk to put in our coffee or whether it should be served in a mug or a cup addiction and over-spending on poker machines is at epidemic proportions in australia open your eyes you won t get real figures from a stupid phone survey most addicts won t tell their spouses or loved ones let alone the government the answer is with us players the answer is the removal of the dreaded feature scott eager youth fridays 6 8pm sundays 9.30am with kids programs new night time now at 5.30pm 1029wwd3527 m 1029wwd7422 cnr northern rd m4 orchard hills ph 4736 3000 inchurchpenrith.com uch of the current debate surrounding poker machine reform in australia is ill-informed and fails to hit the realities of the problem and i refer to both sides in the ongoing battle over mandatory pre-commitment i received an opinion piece from scott eager late last week that i think begins to explain some of the core problems that exist `on the ground so i m going to sit back this week and leave you in the hands of scott i m a nobody an everyday guy i m a roofer in the day and a boxing coach at night i m also an ex-poker machine addict i used to be one of the people this government is supposedly trying to help i m talking about poker machine reform of course i m talking about the government trying to do something about the teachers builders nurses pensioners house wives white and blue collar workers anyone you know who may be secretly but painfully addicted to the cash cow that is the dreaded poker machine i rang the david oldfield show on 2ue last week with a suggestion on how to solve if not greatly reduce the poker machine addiction epidemic it s simple remove the feature david told me i was wrong naturally even though he later admitted he didn t know what the feature was the feature or free spins is the symbols that award you free games if you get three or more th is is the elephant in the room chasing features is where our money goes every player sits down with their hard tanya davies mp member for mulgoa can i help you phone 02 9833 2913 address shop 1/159 queen st st marys 2760 email in broken bottles and cans and extensive damage was done to the playing surface a turn back time a game against illawarra scheduled just a week after the concert was thrown into doubt because of the state of the ground but eventually went ahead concert organisers reimbursed the club for the damage caused the panthers were forced to train at other venues because work was being done to repair damage to the ground these days of course the ground at centrebet stadium could probably survive a dozen midnight oil concerts over the years it has emerged as one of the most state-of-the-art playing www.westernweekender.com.au opinion dear weekender email penritheditorial@mediaview.com.au post suite 2 42-44 abel street jamisontown 2750 i still played footy but i well and truly indulged my love of greasy food it is of no surprise to me that the fast food outlet i worked at went out of business given the amount of chips i ate in the kitchen classmates were happy to point out from time to time that i was carrying extra kilos but it was really just water off a duck s back it was like pointing out that i had brown hair they were stating what i knew what everyone could see i was tempted to just respond with der but opted to simply ignore it all when i became serious about footy and was trying to make it to the highest level all the training led to me shedding kilos and i ve never really put them back on in fact now i m almost the polar opposite at my last footy club i had the nickname starvin marvin and at my current one i am often referred to as sticks again i don t really care it s a statement of fact that i am skinnier than most of the the last remaining ties with the uk and become a republic should consider that we are becoming more a colony of the usa than we ever were of the uk isn t it remarkable that republics seem to be more prone to wars than monarchies jay nauss via email brought to you by an historic week i cannot believe that this prime minister has the gall to say the truth is any increase in cost will be modest dear weekender western weekender november 11 i recall the truth at the last election there will not be a carbon tax under a government i lead and now a carbon tax as far as i am concerned julia gillard blatantly lied to all australians before the last election and therefore has no credibility rick putra glenmore park marines are coming no sooner was prime minister julia fi nished with the apec meeting at hawaii when she announced the us marines were coming to australia to train and establish a permanent military presence here as well the us armed forces will be pre-positioning supplies and weapons in this country in anticipation of america s next war we are to be little less than an aircraft carrier for the usa the usa is always at war with someone since 1960 the us has been responsible for the deaths of millions of civilians in its many wars are not these crimes against humanity the presence of us forces on australian soil will be a disaster for us why because if the us gets entangled in war with china as has been suggested could happen we will be dragged into the confl ict for those who want to sever the western facebook new coach welcome ivan seeing cleary now western weekender november 11 i reckon the optimism is justified around the club given how poorly the last coach went the only way is up however at the end of the day ivan is not the only change that is required around the club fans should get out and vote at the upcoming board elections stefan hofman via facebook brave face i get the feeling that ivan cleary is putting on somewhat of a brave face the panthers have recruited poorly and i can t see them doing anything special this year dane via email i have a confession to make as a child i was overweight very overweight it actually shouldn t be a confession because it s not really a source of any shame for me it s a just a simple fact i was a chubby kid it didn t trouble me then either i don t see why people have such a focus on their weight and worse yet on others nowadays i make a choice to be fit active and keep healthy wind the clock back about fifteen years and it was a very different story blokes there whatever now it s all well and good for me to be nonchalant about criticism of my peculiar body shape but i feel genuinely sorry for anyone that takes that type of petty analysis to heart why is it that people seem to think it s their god given right no duty to pass judgment on other people s girth who cares it s kids in particular that are the greatest concern here not only are schoolchildren the most likely to engage in vicious and spiteful critiques of their classmates but they are also the ones most likely to take it to heart the flipside of the coin is that we also don t want to be encouraging a generation of children to be obese but this is of course another issue of equal importance your thoughts email t o m nine c o m a u or
