volume 41 no 1 east gaston high school s student newspaper 1744 lane road mount holly nc 28120 sept-nov 2011 mrs bostic by tyler persinger the new east gaston principle after the retirement of mrs starnes east gaston needed a new leader and they found one in mrs cristi bostic she is a hard working person she graduated from ecu and is now working on her doctorate leaving her little time for hobbies when she isn t at the school or doing school work she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children she also has a dog named bell some have already met her but for those who haven t i sat down with her for an interview to give you an idea of who she is and what she is about what do you like about east gaston i like the students the staff and the traditions what do you want to change nothing that i know of what is your opinion on the dress code we try to further define the dress code with things that don t really apply to other schools but most of it is the county s policy what is the biggest difference between middle and high school a lot more students more things going on and more hours if you could have dinner with three people who would they be my husband and my two girls because i don t get to see them much anymore mrs bostic memories the day started off with everyone showing their warrior pride by wearing their black friday t-shirts and getting their face painted by some fellow classmates then instead of fourth period we got pumped up at the big pep rally with cheering dancing by angela shirley alright warriors so this year s black games and competitions as to who really showed the most school spirit friday game wasn t what we were expectsenior blair lambert won a competiing but we still had fun and made some tion with his full indian costume but overall the juniors showed the most school spirit this year and won the spirit stick sorry seniors unfortunately later that night when it was time for the big game a severe storm rolled up postponing the game until saturday therefore turning our black friday into black saturday when saturday came around we didn t get off to such a good start like we had planned but then again neither did south paige clemmer jordan creel morgan mcconnell courtney woody point when that girl was thrown from her horse kayla moss and hannah trahan black friday 2011 blair lambert in his warrior attire before the game started unfortunately the game did not end in our favor either the final score was 6 to 63 but our players left with their heads held high most of the players did not have much to say about the game but senior zac queen stated of course we were all disappointed with the outcome of this game but it was only the third game of the season so there is room for improvement and i know we are going to work hard and get better as the season goes on all that senior jarke hopkins had to add was we were definitely bamboozled but what can we do but work harder with that said be sure to come out and support your warriors at any upcoming football games and keep in mind that we always have next year ahead of to whoop some raider butt!

sept-nov 2011 page 2 s p football team in the playoffs by tyler persinger orts this year s football season started off with a bit of a surprise the head coach eric tippett resigned on the first day of practice in order to take a job closer to home his replacement was offensive coordinator sean joyce the team didn t seem to be affected by the coaching change a reaction that east gaston s administration was happy to see the main difference between the two coaches is the energy joyce rallies his troops in a much more visible way than coach tip pett ever did coach joyce is more of an excitement coach says quarterback and defensive back jarke hopkins he puts more excitement into the game another story line early in the season has been the quarterback situation hopkins is a dual threat quarterback who brings speed to the offense colt crane has also been getting snaps under center as more of a passing threat injuries to both players have made the competition interesting the season started with a 1-2 start and it appeared that the warriors would lose again when they fell behind by 21 points to east lincoln on september 9 but east lincoln forgot how to tackle chris mcdowell mcdowell went off for 298 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns troy steele added 2 interceptions in the final 65 seconds to seal the win coach joyce celebrates the gary gore s go ahead touchdown vs east lincoln the east lincoln game showed the attitude of this year s team the kids show up and work hard and play hard said coach joyce the warriors have played from behind in most of their games and with a few breaks could easily have started the season 4-1 the warriors have fought back from big deficits all year they lost three games hunter huss berry and harding by seven points or less with a win against garinger on october 7 the warriors gained a playoff spot cross country is running strong east gaston men s soccer after wrapping up last year s season with a first round playoff loss to a.c reynolds coach allen and the returning players were ready for this season the team lost 5 seniors after last year including starting goalie brandon greene leading scorer josh o meara and leading assist maker christian ocasio this year s new team is rather young having only 4 seniors 4 juniors 5 sophomores and 3 freshmen although they are young they never use it as an excuse they just work hard with what they ve got and try to improve overall as a team the team started off a little rocky with an opening record of 0 wins 9 losses and 2 ties in their first 11 games although the team is still without a win they refuse to give up and will continue to improve freshman matthew fletcher stated that he really enjoys being on by tanner hawkins tyler lopez bill ocasio and jeramie majchrzak the east gaston boy s cross country team has only four seniors this year to start off the season the team lost patrick rhyne jacob mcgee and doug sithisaribouth this year some of their strongest runners last year the seniors this year for the team are jordan bishop dillon lewis austin joy and mikayla o meara bishop recently said cross country is more than running it has taught me so much about discipline desire and a will to win it has also helped me get in shape meet many friends continued on page 3 by jacob melton the team and that he feels like he has already improved and has become friends with all of the players the team has had great moments so far even though it hasn t yet resulted in a victory for example the men s soccer team lost 8 to 0 against hunter huss in a pre-season jamboree and not even 4 weeks later the warriors played the huskies again and were leading at halftime but ended in a loss with a score of 6 goals to 3 the warriors were disappointed with the loss but they knew that they had improved drastically and will continue to do so the easton gaston men s soccer team dillon coley leads the pack will keep the never-quit mentality and will continue to practice hard and fight like warriors they have improved tremendously so far and they will not stop now good luck and keep up the good work go warriors!

sept-nov 2011 page 5 edit we got spirit yes we do we got spirit how `bout you so have you seen how crowded the new student section is at our home football games yea me either come on east gaston we can do better than this we finally have a student section in our stands for home football games it is located on the 50 yard line and can be as big as we need it to be the thing is we only needed about 12 seats at the first game pretty disappointing i commend the 12 by tanner hawkins orials people who did support our team dressed in white faces painted d-fence sign in hand and full of that warrior pride it was great to look up from the sidelines and see those guys cheering on the team i just juniors sarah casciani and jordan garrison have to believe that we can beat this so this brings me to the question what causes someone to have school spirit according to senior cheerleader maddie moran i love the pep rallies they make me feel spirit-ey and get me pumped up senior football player zac queen says it s easy the feather in the hair is a wide spreading style all over the world that is also expanding in east gaston many people have been wearing them and it s something that will probably keep expanding the feathers will get bigger and longer and the styles of them will probably change although styles of them will change there will still be feathers in your hair to have spirit when you re out there on the field the coaches and team are so pumped the crowd s energy really can help us keep going though we do have some students who have really shown their warrior pride this season senior amber vencill can be found on the sideline with the dance team during home games but during the away games she can be found in the stands horn in hand decked out in eg colors and face paint also junior derek dewosky is always ready to show his school spirit and was leading the student section at the last home game decked out in warrior attire if you have seen these two this season you have to admit it looks like they are having a pretty good time so why not give it a try east gaston has a lot to be proud of we have some really impressive athletes as well as scholars we have an award winning band some awesome teachers and that kicker dang have you seen him anyway let s lose the cool attitude and have fun with some school spirit what do you have to lose warrior pride we ve got spirit how bout you receive in them is very important because it is the last full year of grades that colleges will review when deciding your fate it is pretty much the last opportunity you have to boost your gpa also for those of you who tend to get on your teachers bad side you may want to change that because some of the teachers you have for classes your junior year may also play an important role for you in your senior year when you ask them to write you a letter of recommendation for college it is also important to try and stay out of trouble not only in your junior year but throughout all of high school because i have recently learned that colleges will ask about any suspensions and if you have been suspended in high school you will have to explain why and there is no use lying because they will have your school records not only do colleges look at grades and behavior but extracurricular activities as well such as clubs sports and community work i have been trying really hard this year to join some clubs and do things outside of school of school that will look good on my college application because it is important for me that i get into a good school stated junior eva kirkpatrick it is apparent that your junior year may not be easy in fact it is probably the most difficult year of high school but it is important to just muddle through the best you can because all the hard work will pay off in the long run when you are out in the world living your dream feathers in the hair a new fashion statement in east gaston this year is having a feather in your hair to look cool feathers in your hair can be worn by either girls or guys and they can go from different sizes and different colors they may also resemble some exotic birds even famous people have been wearing them and some examples are steven tyler selena gomez and demi levodo steven tyler has been wearing a feather in his hair for years and it may be the thing that made people start wearing them many people like the way they look because it s a new statement for people to have a lot of students wear them too such as junior melissa joiner sophomore kelsey britt junior sydney rimmer and junior nikki hanson i asked them why they wore feathers in their hair they all had these reasons melissa joiner said i wear a feather in my hair because it s cute kelsey britt answered because they look cool and they spice up your hair when i asked sydney rimmer she stated i like my hair to look wild and it seemed like a pretty wild thing to do nikki hanson quoted it looks really really awesome and it makes me feel crazy by stacy keziah sarah ammons joeseph vanderpool gracie rutledge and adriana ruiz attention juniors if you are in or approaching your junior year in high school then this is the article for you in your junior year of high school you will make critical decisions that could have a major impact on the rest of your life as you start narrowing down lists of colleges and career paths the junior year selection of classes and the grades you by angela shirley

sept-nov 2011 page 11 ask the chief is there a reason why our high school does not have afternoon night classes from larry zack yaeger dear larry if you are interested in taking extra classes you should talk to your counselor about taking fifth period every day after school otherwise i can t help you we don t have night classes because this isn t college dear chief why must we re-do a project as an entire class when we followed the teachers instructions exactly the way she explained them i mean it s not our fault she didn t explain the project the way she wanted it and honestly i have better things to do than a project that i did a good job on the first time teachers like this make me scratch my head sometimes thanks honors student dear honors student i know exactly the kind of teacher you are talking about and i completely agree it seems like nothing is ever really good enough for these teachers the best thing to do is do something a little better than he/she asked for on every assignment i know that s a lot of work but if you really care about your grade you have to do what it takes when he/she asks for a sugar cookie don t just make a regular cookie make two and put sprinkles on top nathan benfield why are my clothes so tight lonelystar dear lonelystar maybe it s time to buy new clothes why is the football team so bad dear i think the football team deserves a pass they faced adversity all season long they didn t have coach smith with them on the sidelines for the second half of the season because of his battle with leukemia they lost three games by seven points or less they erased deficits of more than 20 points twice they could have easily finished the season 7-3 gotten a better draw in the playoffs and would probably still be playing if you re going to criticize your sports teams then transfer to charlotte catholic sincerely the chief
