2 news local friday november 11 2011 the inner city weekender an association with 064icd1271 come visit us for a coffee seriously how good are kids you may be currently screaming at yours telling them to put that down stop punching your sister or don t set that on fi re and as such couldn t disagree more vehemently but i make that comment from an enviable position that of uncle i don t have kids myself but am an uncle to five gorgeous kids aged under five with two more buns in family ovens and the reason i m so enthralled by the little ones right now is i ve just had a week off work and spent most of it playing uncle that position involves several privileges 1 you are a novelty when you arrive 2 if you arrive with lollies you are an even bigger novelty 3 when the kids start crying or it gets to nappy time you can simply pass the young uns back to their rightful owners all this uncle-ness i invented that word just go with it got me thinking about when the day comes for me to have kids and how much time i d be able to spend with them in my early twenties during a particularly lazy phase at university i decided i wanted to be a stay at home dad now i fear i d be the opposite hardly there for my kids and i genuinely think that s a worry far be it from me to lecture parents but i really do think the amount of time mum and dad are around makes a massive difference to the development of a child hopefully it has no affect on how this generation grows up but you have to wonder whether being raised by the local child care centre has an adverse impact on a child the tougher demands on parents have had one distinct bonus though more and more grandparents are playing a role in a child s development my brother and his wife have just moved closer to our parents so that they have a handy babysitter close by i don t know who loves this arrangement more my brother my parents or the kids actually who am i kidding my parents are over the moon it seems they enjoy the part-time role of grand parenting almost as much as i love being an uncle peter overton tom steinfort the faces of nine and the inner city weekender s page two in brief on september 2 2011 the inner curfew and reviewing movement caps at sydney airport should be considered before building a second airport in sydney mr borghetti s comments were made at an australiaisrael chamber of commerce lunch in sydney last week the fi rst question we should ask ourselves is how do we free up more capacity at the current sydney airport so that we maximise it as much as possible whether that s increasing the movement cap or adjusting the curfew or changing the type of airplanes that fly there he said despite acknowledging the range of different interests and constraints mr borghetti said having a second airport for planes to fly into would be a bold move allan rees president of local group no aircraft noise said mr borghetti didn t understand that the curfew and caps were in place because sydney has an inner city airport the curfew which is only seven hours is there because people need uninterrupted sleep every night he said tuesday s torrential downpour caused chaos for commuters trying to head home in the afternoon trains were disrupted on the inner west bankstown airport and east hills and south lines after lightning struck signalling equipment at sydnenham railway station passengers experienced delays of over 30 minutes according to the transport management centre the disruption to commuters on the bankstown line continued on wednesday afternoon as some trains were 10 lifestyle friday november 11 2011 the inner city weekender staying healthy susan garrad keeping fit q are all natural medicines safe and non toxic do i have to choose between using natural medicine or pharmaceutical medicine with the use of natural medicine on the rise there are still lots of misconceptions about natural therapies here are two common myths myth herbal remedies are safe and nontoxic so i can selfprescribe them fact it is important to realise that natural doesn t necessarily mean safe although the vast majority of herbs are safe when used properly they also are powerful they can cause adverse effects and can interact negatively with conventional medicines seek advice from someone trained in herbal and natural medicines and buy products from a reputable source to ensure quality and purity always tell your doctor about any natural therapies you use because it will give him or her a better understanding of your whole health care picture myth you must choose either natural medicine or conventional medicine fact you no longer have to choose as both natural and conventional approaches can play a role in meeting your health care needs latest figures show australians are turning in droves to natural therapies there has been a 51 per cent increase in the number of people visiting complementary health professionals in the past 10 years 60 per cent of australians now use natural medicine spending around $2 billion dollars a year on complementary medicine products and services most people also use mainstream medicine with figures showing 32 per cent of people who had visited a complementary health therapist had consulted a doctor in the previous two weeks rising to 63 per cent in the previous three months women are the most frequent users of natural medicine making up 62 per cent of the people who visit a complementary health therapist most patients are aged between 25 and 64 unfortunately a visit to a naturopath or herbalist is not covered by medicare for safe and effective natural medicine book an appointment with susan garrad at women s health naturally summer hill on 9798 9322 david stein one question came in this week about a workout for time poor people all of us at times fi nd we get a little stretched to fit a workout in one effective simple method is to get back to basics work as much muscle as you can as hard as you can in whatever time you have forget bicep curls or toe flexes get a big compound movement which means the more joints moving the better get as much weight as you can safely handle and move it as fast as you can however unless you re extremely fit already an all out set of that won t last for very long before you feel like lying down and having a rest for a week or two th is is where intervals are good an interval type workout is where you can do all out sets of exercise broken up by rest so you can keep the intensity high enough th ink of the difference in pace you would have if you were running the city to surf compared to the pace you would cover over 50 metres if two huge rottweilers launched around a corner at you that 50 metres might only be a tiny fraction of the distance and time that it takes to do the city to surf but the actual results in terms of training for your body would be a whole lot more than the equivalent 50 metres in the long distance run because of the intensity so basically your return on time invested is a whole lot higher there was a study done years ago called `impact of exercise intensity on body fatness and skeletal muscle metabolism it showed a group of people doing interval training for 15 weeks burnt nine times the amount of fat as a group of endurance training people training for 20 weeks even if the fat burning was just equal it would be a good reason to do it but nine times more is incredible there is a drawback though it s hard basic training and not everyone can handle it if it s easy you re doing something wrong keep it simple for example do as many chin-ups as you can then drop and do as many pushups as you can it has been around a long time under different names i think it s even how the egyptians trained before a big day building pyramids these days though it has got names like crossfit or caveman training but call it what you like it s a good way to make the most of limited time now as to why you have only got limited time to exercise sounds like some sort of priority problem but that s a whole new column no matter how time poor you are you need to fit some exercise into your weekly routine make it work and you will feel a whole lot better in your day david stein has worked in the fitness industry for over 18 years training and advising thousands of individuals clubs and companies he now runs fitec
