1005226_themount_the mount winter 2006 quark 5 10/26/11 8:35 am page 5 news from the development office dear alumni and friends of the mount as the mount s director of alumni relations i am given the unique opportunity to interact with alumni of all ages and backgrounds throughout a typical year those interactions come in the form of class reunions alumni association and development events as well as regional and young alumni gatherings over the span of a few days this september i traveled to williamsburg va ocean city md and salisbury md for three events that captured three very different groups of alumni in a way these three days represented a condensed year of alumni events usually it takes an entire year for me to meet with all of these groups i enjoy interacting with alumni of all ages it helps remind me what the mount means to different generations and i thought it would be very fitting to share these experiences with you in williamsburg i attended the resident s reunion which was organized by jim brooke of the class of 1957 there were roughly twenty-five attendees over the three-day reunion from the classes of 1947-1961 i was fortunate enough to be present for the first two days of the three-day reunion most alumni would agree that the mount was their homeaway-from-home when they were in high school i know i certainly felt that way these men can say that the mount was their home and mean it quite literally for those of you who don t know the mount was a boarding school until 1961 a section of the m building was laid out in barracksstyle dormitories from the first hello it is evident that these men take great pride in calling themselves resident alumni most of my time with the residents was spent listening to them reminisce of old times and much was said that attests to the love that these gentlemen have for the xaverian brothers i ve heard a few of their stories before but most of them detailed the brothers tough love nonetheless it is very reassuring to know that no matter how tough a particular brother was some fifty to sixty years later these gentlemen know that everything the brothers did for them was out of love this sentiment still holds true with many of our faculty today which is a strong testament to just how xaverian the mount truly is day students or day hops as the residents called them left campus and returned home to their families the residents were unable to return home so their fellow boarders and the brothers who took care of them became their family the strong bond between the residents is palpable and i consider it a rare privilege to spend time with these gentlemen getting to know what it was like being a resident at the mount the next stop on my excursion was ocean city md where i met with the oc gaels this is a group of alumni who live in or near ocean city led by rod thuman 62 they meet several times a year for casual lunch their goal is to foster a stronger relationship with the mount and also to help bolster the annual fund through dues and fundraisers this particular luncheon was the largest of the year with forty attendees from the classes of 1949 to 1974 rod works hard to locate and reach out to alumni in the area his work in building the oc gaels attendance base is inspiration for a new alumni program that i hope to see come to fruition in the years to come it is my ultimate goal to create alumni networks in other regions throughout the country that have a well-established alumni presence it is very important to keep alumni informed about what is going on at the mount and this type of event allows for a more personable social way to keep in contact with our alumni if you live in the ocean city area and would like more information about the oc gaels please call 410646-4700 i left ocean city after the oc gaels luncheon and traveled to salisbury university for the first young alumni college dinner of this school year our principal barry fitzpatrick and i attended a casual dinner with twenty-five alumni from the classes of 2008-2011 it was nice to see familiar faces and to catch up with these men and hear how prepared they were for college i began the young alumni program with the goal of keeping our youngest alumni engaged and connected to the mount throughout their years in college knowing that five years is a long time before their first reunion we want to maintain the enduring personal relationships for which the mount is so well-known with that in mind two years ago mr fitz and i began our young alumni college visits we know that we can t visit everyone but there are dense pockets of young alumni at colleges and universities throughout the country that we target for these occasions additional trips are being planned for the new york metropolitan area schools in virginia virginia tech james madison university and the university of virginia and the university of maryland college park for more information about upcoming young alumni activities email jpoisal@msjnet.edu i look forward to this year s events and i hope to see many of you there thank you for supporting the mount sincerely james poisal 03 director of alumni relations
