FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Dear Friends, The last time I wrote to you I had mentioned that the early signs of Winter seemed quite positive, with temperatures beginning to drop since the first week of November. It has been a long time since the North has seen a cold November! Woollen Clothes Manufacturers perked up in anticipation of bumper sales, and Retailers looked forward to cover the deficit of the earlier months. Unfortunately, things did not pan out that way! Temperatures saw a rise once again post-Diwali, and it was back to gloom and despair–something the Industry is getting used to by now! With this change in mood, I foresee Retailers and Brands quickly adjusting their EOSS strategies, and though, at one time, many were contemplating to postpone the start of EOSS to January, we may see the Discount Season start from the middle of December itself. Fortunately, after disastrous post-Diwali sales, December temperatures are going down and the mood is on the upswing. Keeping the fingers crossed for a good Winter! A lot of excitement was noticed on the Exports front, with the October Exports showing a year-on-year growth of over 30%. But I would advise caution before popping the Champagne. Must not forget that with the old Duty Drawback Scheme having come to an end last September, massive dumping was seen in September 2017, and hence, the October 2017 Exports were unnaturally low. The base therefore was artificially low–and the growth may not necessarily reflect a turnaround. A more accurate comparison would be seeing the September and October figures together. An exciting New Project is on the anvil for CMAI–it is planning to undertake a massive research among Consumers to arrive at a reasonably accurate estimate of the Size of the Indian Domestic Market. It is well known in the Industry that estimates of the Market Size are at best based on assumed growth figures over a small study done sometime in 2000 and 2002, and the CMAI felt it was high time an actual Market Survey was conducted, using state-of-the-art technologies and statistical tools, to arrive at the actual size of the Market. It is proposed to tie up with the world-renowned Indian Readership Survey, which could cover over 80,000 households across the Country. This is one of the most ambitious projects undertaken by CMAI, and it is likely to be Associated with the Ministry of Textiles for this Project. I will keep you informed of the progress in due course. Till then, a Merry Christmas, and a great Winter Season! RAHUL MEHTA Help us improve Apparel.
