www.westernweekender.com.au opinion from the editor s desk troy dodds my information is that deaf football australia recently approached the federal sports minister about funding for the national deaf football team th is would have assisted the team in qualifying for overseas tournaments training camps and the introduction of school development programs the funding plea was rejected how much do you think they wanted $1 million a year $2 million a year what about $3 million a year nowhere near it in fact all they asked for was a lousy $300,000 over four years that s just $75,000 a year troy.dodds@mediaview.com.au now i understand the federal government can t answer every call for funding but fair dinkum this is $75,000 a year for a bunch of dedicated athletes representing their country what s even sadder in all of this is that football federation australia ffa is in the same boat as the federal government when i looked on its website there s no mention of the deaf team the ffa is not interested in supporting deaf football australia in any way mr seymour told me to them we are a burden they will not support deaf football australia in any way whether it be for funding camps or helping [us locate hearing impaired or deaf players through their national player registration system the world game suddenly appears very insular the deaf team is heading off to south korea in may to compete for three weeks against 16 countries across asia for one of five spots at the deaflympics to be held in budapest hungary in july 2013 the team needs $125,000 to get there i ve sent an email to both football federation australia and federal sports minister mark arbib regarding this issue their replies will be interesting and i ll ensure we publish them in full the person who fi rst alerted me to this story is a knockabout rugby league loving bloke he happened to stumble across the deaf team training at a local park recently and was humbled by their commitment despite their adversities if only we were all so humbled youth fridays 6 8pm sundays 9.30am with kids programs new night time now at 5.30pm 1028wwd3527 cnr northern rd m4 orchard hills ph 4736 3000 can i help you the western weekender here are plenty of things one could talk about when it comes to the federal government the carbon tax rumours about leadership or cabinet re-shuffl ing qantas involvement the national broadband network the list goes on and on but today i want to reveal the details of a story that i think just plain stinks it is a story that bypasses all of the toplevel stuff that dominates the front pages and 6pm news bulletins for that very reason it s likely nothing will be done to fi x it for those unaware australia has a deaf soccer team run under the banner of deaf football australia the game gives males or females who are deaf or hearing impaired the opportunity to play for their country according to deaf football australia several deaf footballers have managed to reach the professional ranks over the last century but the number is not large a total of around a dozen have been noted some have reached the highest levels of the game while others only have limited opportunities to succeed at the top level but level of success isn t the point here the point here is that we have a group of players dedicated to their chosen sport who are representing their country they will wear the australian jersey with pride representing us at national and international competitions the federal government however appears uninterested t all they asked for was a lousy $300,000 over four years that s just $75,000 a year you can sneeze in parliament house and that amount of cash will come out of a program or scheme somewhere brian seymour the secretary of deaf football australia said he was told the cash injection was not possible as the funding they were after was only for professional athletes and that the team fell under participation when mr seymour confi rmed that half the national team were playing at a high standard where four to five players at the time were paying taxes on the semi professional income from their football commitments as well as having ex-socceroo players on board as coaching staff they still said no 1028wwd8409 turning back time s the weather was getting warmer in november 1953 the people of penrith were crying out for a swimming pool the november 12 1953 edition of the nepean times reported that varying views on a proposal to establish a swimming pool in penrith were expressed at a public meeting called by the mayor mustcomplete task we are all of the opinion that a swimming pool is very much needed in penrith and i think the only way of getting it is by having this public meeting and getting the views of the www.westernweekender.com.au opinion dear weekender email penritheditorial@mediaview.com.au post suite 2 42-44 abel street jamisontown 2750 individuals or families not at all instead it s something that 500 of our biggest polluters will pay for the carbon pollution they pump into our atmosphere these polluters will now have an incentive to cut their carbon pollution if they become greener they will pay less of the carbon price in addition our plan will help australian companies become greener by funding innovative ideas and new clean energy technologies labor understands some people are concerned polluters may pass on the carbon price to their customers that s why we ve included fi nancial assistance in our plan to support families nine out of 10 households will receive tax cuts and increases in their pensions and allowances to assist them with any costs passed on by polluters for a year now tony abbott has claimed the impact of the carbon price on families will be almost unimaginable the truth is any increase will be modest treasury has told australians that groceries for example are only expected to go up by 80 cents per week the household assistance we are offering will offset these increases in fact more than 4 million households will end up better off in western sydney for example around 170,000 people will receive a tax cut and for 141,000 of these it will be a cut of at least $300 further assistance will be provided to almost 130,000 residents in western sydney through pension and allowance increases or through boosts to family support payments julia gillard prime minister of australia week off work and spent most of it playing uncle that position involves several privileges 1 you are a novelty when you arrive 2 if you arrive with lollies you are an even bigger novelty 3 when the kids start crying or it gets to nappy time you can simply pass the young uns back to their rightful owners all this uncle-ness i invented that word just go with it got me thinking about when the day comes for me to have kids and how much time i d be able to spend with them in my early twenties during a particularly lazy phase at university i decided i wanted to be a stay at home dad now i fear i d be the opposite hardly there for my kids and i genuinely think that s a worry far be it from me to lecture parents but i really do think the amount of time mum and dad are around brought to you by costs will skyrocket the carbon tax passed its last hurdle in the senate amidst much jubilation and tears of joy from the government benches a time capsule was buried to be opened in 2050 long after most of us are gone will the world be a better place in 2050 as a result of the carbon tax somehow i doubt it immigration into australia is growing at an accelerating rate and any gains made by the tax limiting carbon dioxide pollution will be wiped out by the increasing population tony is still sticking to his belief that he will be able to repeal the tax when he gets to the lodge we will see if he is still leader when the alp is ousted from government in the short term one thing is certain and that is the cost of living will skyrocket for all of us jay nauss via email th is is an historic week that will change the lives of many australians after 20 years of debate the labor government s clean energy future legislation has been passed by our parliament and will become law th is is the fi rst time we will have a law that cuts the carbon pollution which causes climate change labor has fought hard to do the right thing we re protecting the environment for our children and our grandchildren let me be clear the carbon price is not a tax on an historic week 6 friday novermber 11 2011 the western weekender have your say rite to the editor w seriously how good are kids you may be currently screaming at yours telling them to put that down stop punching your sister or don t set that on fi re and as such couldn t disagree more vehemently but i make that comment from an enviable position that of uncle i don t have kids myself but am an uncle to five gorgeous kids aged under five with two more buns in family ovens and the reason i m so enthralled by the little ones right now is i ve just had a makes a massive difference to the development of a child hopefully it has no affect on how this generation grows up but you have to wonder whether being raised by the minder at a local child care centre has an adverse impact on a child the tougher demands on parents have had one distinct bonus though more and more grandparents are playing a pivotal role in the development of children my brother and his wife have just moved closer to our mum and dad so that they have a handy babysitter close by i don t know who loves this arrangement more my brother my parents or the kids actually who am i kidding my parents are over the moon it seems they enjoy the part-time role of grand parenting almost as much as i love being an uncle peter overton
