laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 headmaster s report dear parents and pupils i am delighted to introduce you to the highlights of our year so far which are detailed in this newsletter time has passed incredibly quickly as is so often the case in a busy school as you look through following pages you will notice how industrious creative and innovative pupils have been we have enjoyed a truly positive academic year so far that has proved to be very productive the junior school has progressed with wonderful enthusiasm as it is the second year in the cumbre site everything is so much more familiar and the school has a new home hearing the echoes of pupils splashing in the indoor pool in november was fantastic we thank you for your patience and look forward to our children learning to swim under the excellent guidance of jayne henaghan and anita grayson our students have enjoyed several excursions with the year 6 pupils visiting the vital par centre in parcent they also went to cap prim to further their geographical awareness of coastal areas children from the younger year levels have gained valuable knowledge during their trips to a variety of different places including the supermarket terra natura and the local fire station year 4 pupils were fortunate enough to participate in a roman workshop at the museo de alicante where they had a great time during the interactive workshops we contents page 1 page 2 page 3 page 4 page 5 page 6 page 7 page 8 page 9 page 10 page 11 page 12 page 13 would also like to thank all of our visitors whom attend headmaster s report the junior school to give informative talks to our very cambridge results and pre-nursery sensory area school and house captains attentive listeners year 1 trip to terra natura and year 6 visit to vital par centre year 4 trip to roman workshop and f1 trip to mas y mas i hope you enjoy this small window into life in school and halloween and psicomotricidad room victorian day and visit to school from valencian counsellor that it is a reminder of some of the achievements of your karate gradings children year 6 field trip to cap prim lamda results and a special visit fire station visit infantil and year 2 with very best wishes visit from the ambulance service and day of peace richard wijeratne foles and celebrating world book day

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 junior school report junior school cambridge examination results pupils of laude lady elizabeth junior school were proud to receive their certificates of achievement for young learners ket examinations which they took with cambridge examinations syndicate in june 2010 the young learners english yle is a reliable and consistent measure of how well a child is doing in the skills of listening speaking and reading and writing tests are designed to make learning fun and children are encouraged by working towards certificates and earning the shields that record their progress there are three levels for children to work through starters movers and flyers with starters being the first aimed at young children with very basic skills as children develop and work their way up to the flyers certificate they reach a level that will enable them to aim for the key english test ket this year pupils from year 6 who entered for the ket examination were all delighted to be awarded merit which means they achieved 85 or above congratulations to everyone pre-nursery sensory area pre-nursery now have a super sensory area thanks to the foles who donated money to buy equipment such as colourful lights and torches mobiles cushions and `feely books the children are fascinated by the colours and lights and love watching them and making them move around cushions they can roll about on the soft without fear of hurting all these themselves and feel the different textures on the pages of the books senses things add to the development of their

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 junior school head pupils 2010-11 head girl laura rodriguez is head girl she 10 years old laura is spanish she speaks spanish english and valenciano her favourite subjects are art and pe and her hobbies are art swimming and dance when laura leaves school she would like to be an artist head boy aidan marshall is head boy he is 10 years old aidan is british his favourite subject is design and technology and for hobbies he enjoys anything mechanical he speaks english spanish and valenciano aidan is a blue belt in karate and would like to be an actor or a pilot when he leaves school house captains 2010-11 marlborough house red harry simmonds is captain of marlborough house he is 10 years old harry is english he speaks english and some spanish and has been at the school for 4½ years he enjoys football singing acting dancing and swimming his favourite subjects at school are drama pe maths and literacy he would like to be either an actor a singer a dancer or a footballer when he leaves school longleat house yellow enrique bloch is captain of longleat house he is 10 years old enrique is british despite his spanish name he speaks english and some spanish his favourite subjects are pe music science and ict and he enjoys swimming football and rugby in his spare time he would like to be a footballer when he leaves school chatsworth house green veronika murga is captain of chatsworth house she is 11 years old veronika is russian she speaks russian english and spanish her favourite subject at school is art because she loves drawing and decorating things every winter veronika goes skiing in different places because she loves travelling when she leaves school she would love to be an actress woburn house blue lorena soler is captain of woburn house she is 10 years old lorena is spanish she speaks english spanish and valenciano she enjoys all sport and particularly gymnastics her favourite lesson at school is gymnastics too lorena has three brothers one of whom is in thailand at present she would like to be a doctor when she leaves school.

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 year 1 trip to terra natura year 1 had a fabulous day out at terra natura learning all about how different animals move the children enjoyed watching the monkeys swinging and playing in the trees and loved watching the rhinoceros wallowing in the water they saw lots of different types of animals and even fed the deer as part of their experience this all helped the children with their science work back at school and gave them lots to write about in their literacy lessons all the children enjoyed making and baking their own bread and of course they thought the play area was fantastic everyone came back to school tired but with lots of lovely memories of their day out with their teachers y6 trip to vital park parcent on monday 5th october 2010 y6 from laude lady elizabeth school went to vital park centre in parcent and why you ask because their sports teacher miss henaghan wanted them to practise their teamwork orienteering which they had been working on in their p.e lessons walking for a long time after the bus had dropped us off it was time for year 6 to move on to their first activity which was a zip wires swaying from side to side frantically after y6 had their snack and relaxed for a little while it was time for some orienteering locating the points with help from the compass we were off it was a race to see who could finish first unfortunately i do not remember who won but all i do know is that y6 had loads of fun after the visit most of y6 all realised something i realised that i needed to work on my teamwork and not go off without my comp anions teamwork is about working together and helping one another and in order to win we need to work as a team because then we will go twice as fast i learnt from the trip not to get scared of something but to give it a go because although i am scared of heights as soon as i got onto the tree i realised it wasn t half bad and i really enjoyed it but next time i think it would be better if they made the orienteering a little bit longer because for me it went too quickly i thoroughly enjoyed this trip and i will probably go there again with my class or my family i can t wait daniel cisneros y6l massive treetop course it was in a lovely forest and everyone had fun at the

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 year 4 trip to roman workshop guadalest the roman workshop has become a regular event for year 4 pupils who study the romans and their way of life as part of the national curriculum unit called invaders and settlers the team leader from the museo de alicante is paco and together with his team of young monitors we split into two groups for our workshop activities these included making mosaics a set of clay dice and a ceramic pendant holding a secret wish while the crafts were drying the children transformed into legionaries under the leadership of victus victor of year 4b resplendent in full costume the soldiers each had a helmet sword and shield and practised assembling in the famous tortoise formation the battle commenced and the well-trained soldiers fought bravely and aggressively luckily there were no casualties after the battle it was time to relax at the arena we watched a fight between a retiarius and a secutor many other gladiator contests and finally a gladiator fight against paco himself who seemed very frightened of our brave gladiators and ran away alina of year 4j summed up the experience by saying that was a fantastic day we will definitely return next year if possible foundation 1 go shopping learning became real and exciting for foundation 1 during a visit to mas y mas supermarket to help extend their language and learning on the topic of food children looked at the different food on sale on the fish counter children weighed looking at numbers and bought fruit and vegetables handling money to talk about and use in activities back in the classroom everyone said `thank you to the staff and left with a bag of `goodies each back at school they made a lovely card for the mas y mas staff to say thank you for their help the sales people were very helpful and showed the children the various types of fish

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 halloween non-uniform day in the junior school as always the junior school pupils went to town with their costumes for halloween not only did they have a really fun day with halloween activities in the classroom a halloween cake sale at morning break and a halloween assembly at the end of the day to show off what they had been doing but they also raised 205 euros for our sponsored children in malawi well done children many thanks also to the parents who kindly made the cakes for the cake sale and to the foles ladies for selling them what do we do in psicomotricidad classes our psicomotricidad room is a tool that helps us to move and to try out the possibilities and the limitations of our own bodies it is a space that makes us feel secure also our teacher is able to teach us the rules of sharing with our friends the body is fundamental in the development stages of a child demonstrating their progress in motor affective and intellectual areas in spontaneous play children can disco ver their capacities thro ugh imagination creativity and expression the psicomotricidad room is a place to jump climb spin run ride etc the photos show some of the activities we do.

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 year 6 victorian day november 2010 year 6 pupils at laude lady elizabeth junior school recently experienced a very different school day when they time-travelled back to victorian times with their teachers everyone came suitably dressed and there was one large classroom with boys and girls sitting separately the day started with an inspection of hands and nails for cleanliness this was followed by prayers taken by the headmistress and lessons in sewing or technical drawing for girls and boys respectively all pupils chanted tables and spellings did arithmetic using pounds shillings and pence and learned about the british empire there was a drill session and playtime was spent on typically victorian pursuits such as hoops spinning tops and marbles the cane and dunces caps were much in evidence as the pupils experienced the strictness of a victorian classroom needless to say although the day was enjoyed by all everyone was relieved to return to normal the next day visit from valencian counsellor on november 30 the junior school had the honour of receiving a visit from the ´conseller de gobernación de valencia sr don serafín castellanos is in charge of placing the first stone of the new proteccíon civil and fire fighters centre which will be constructed in cumbre del sol only a few metres away from the school sr castellanos was accompanied by the delegate of the alicante council sr jose ciscar and various local mayors including benitachell mayor sra josefa ronda sra ronda thanked mr wijeratne for allowing them to use the school facilities to celebrate the event sr castellanos will return for the opening of the centre when it is completed we look forward to the centre being opened having the proteccíon civil and the fire fighters as our neighbours.

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 year 6 field trip to cap prim reported by daniel cisneros arthurs year 6 of laude the lady elizabeth school went on a field trip recently their destination was cap prim by 11:00 am sharp y6 had located their destination their objective for this field trip was to locate and study some of the area s fascinating coastal features everyone was feeling like a hero rushing out of the bus all y6 eyes were set as they gazed at the island that was there before them it was fascinating the view from up here is fabulous their first objective was that they had to draw a sketch of the island identify all of its features and then explain how it had appeared some said there had been a catastrophe and it had been separated from a mountain while others said there had been a landslide i had a word with one of their teachers to see how she felt is what she explained here i m so on the bus i asked a y6 pupil why the trip had occurred why it was and so the boy was right on the way back y6 found it much harder in fact so hard that some of them kept falling over in the end everyone from y6 had arrived back safely and unharmed and if some of us thought it was hard coming up they had better be prepared because going down is always much harder their spirits high as they walked over the last rocks i was able to have a word with one of them moving on we came to a better view of the island you could see everything from up here it was hard to get a word with one of the children since they were too busy snapping photographs of the island i couldn t believe that y6 had finally reached the top i think that the trip occurred because our teachers wanted us to learn about erosion how bays are formed and about the sea the trip was good because we were able to learn many interesting facts and information and that now we will probably go home and relax good and what will happen now this was his response thrilled the children are working so hard and it s such a sunny day

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 lamda results november 2010 once again at laude the lady elizabeth junior school we are proud to announce our 100 pass rate in lamda exams taken during the first term by years 3 and 4 all the children were delighted to pass with either a merit or distinction our top score of the session was awarded to luca wijeratne who achieved a high distinction at entry level congratulations to all our successful performers a very special visit today the father of year 1 student susana garcía visited the junior school to show us his beautiful eagle we were able to see the clever way in which the eagle hunts for his food how he eats and the special care that he needs we also saw how elegantly he flies and how his body is covered with long feathers some of the children even dared to touch him we enjoyed having such a special visitor!

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 fire station visit infantil spanish classes are working on the topics of transport and different types of employment the children had a great time when they visited the fire station where they learned about the work of the firemen the tools and equipment that they need and their means of transport the children also learned about the role of the firemen within the community and looked at the different types of specialist clothing that they have to wear to protect themselves during their work year 2 visit to fire station y2 students also visited the fire station in ondara in connection with their work in history on the great fire of london they were lucky enough to see a fire engine leave the station on an emergency call whilst they were there which was very exciting the children were able to sit inside a fire engine try out the hoses see a fireman sliding down the pole try on the firemen s helmets and see where they sleep when they are on night duty at the end of the visit the firemen complimented year 2 on their excellent behaviour and the interest they showed.

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 ambulance visit in spanish lessons the younger pupils from laude the lady elizabeth school have been learning about jobs that are important for our safety and the methods of transport that are used recently an ambulance visited the school and from pre-nursery to year 1 the pupils were able to see how the injured are transported what the inside of an ambulance looks like and learn about the work that the ambulance staff do they were also able to do something very exciting try out the siren and the lights day of peace on 30 january the spanish department organised a celebration for the day of peace all pupils from the youngest to the oldest contributed to the `peace rainbow made up of different pictures symbolizing peace another activity was `peace is in your hands in which everyone pupils and staff painted their hands and made a handprint inside a giant dove painted on the patio area in the afternoon we had an assembly around the dove which ended with the song in spanish `paz paz paz and the freeing of two doves.

laude the lady elizabeth junior school newsletter autumn/spring 2010/11 foles friends of lady elizabeth school once again we would like to thank the foles for their continued support and generous donations this wonderful group of parents work tirelessly to raise funds to enable us to purchase those little extra things that make our school even more special recently they have been kind enough to donate us a table tennis table goal posts for the sports courts and footballs to kick through the goal posts all of these items are used regularly by our students and they are very appreciative of having extra fun activities to do at lunch and break times we would also like to thank mr ablitt for putting together the goal posts celebrating world book day as part of our celebration of world book day at the junior school foundation 2 and year 1 pupils brought their favourite books to school and year 6 pupils joined them in their classrooms to read to them there were english spanish russian and german books being read to individual children or small groups and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience we also had a pocket money book sale by the ladies of direct books and in the classrooms many book and readingrelated activities were carried out.
