november 2011 cal club news page 5 champions decided c by craig young al club s final race of the year at buttonwillow raceway park october 1-2 2011 presented five groups total one reserved for time trials and the remaining for a normal race line up the 3dcarbon cup s2 series showed up and filled most of group 1 weather was warm with clear and sunny skies entries were low but there was no lack of excitement and excellent racing throughout the race program cal club paused to remember donna bailey with a memorial pace lap around buttonwillow raceway park cal club s pace car worked its way around the circuit with donna s spirit on board of course to return to the flag station where family friends and club members celebrated her life spec miata brought a big surprise to sunday s race program for a showdown like never before the fastest three top qualifier grant westmorland yesterday s race winner elliott skeer and clement lee agreed to start in the last three positions for an added challenge and to put on the best show possible for cal club points didn t matter with lee and westmorland securely filling the top two championship spots and skeer s been busy with the teen mazda challenge so he had nothing to lose either they didn t just start at the rear it was more like a split start with a giant gap between them and the pack so far behind at the start it looked impossible but they pulled it off finishing where they qualified westmorland first skeer second and lee in third after an impressive drive as the trio freight trained the field renny damon raised the bar for our saturday afternoon socials by offering an open feast of killer willow ranch pumpkin run double regional at brp sealed 2011 season cal club paused to remember donna bailey with a memorial pace lap around buttonwillow raceway park cal club s pace car worked its way around the circuit with donna s spirit on board of course to return to the flag station where family friends and club members celebrated her life baer images photo bbq to anyone who accepted the invitation to join his race team for dinner it was delicious finger linking good tri-tip with all the fixings and dessert too it was a perfect way to cap of a great day of cal club racing thank you again renny damon for your generous invitation to feast with your race team cal club held another race entry raffle for drivers and spec miata pilot eric richter was the lucky one to be picked from the hat he won a free race weekend entry group 1 fa fs fc s2 fa a fierce battle unfolded this weekend for the formula atlantic championship between vince gaddini and chris emanuel who were tied in points heading into this final event gaddini set fast time in qualifying saturday morning clicking off a lap 2.2 seconds quicker than rival emanuel at the green gaddini captured the advantage and set a race pace fierce enough to lead the first four laps on the fifth circuit though emanuel made his move to the point the pair raced to the checkered where emanuel captured the win with a whop ping 12.8 seconds advantage over gaddini in second sunday morning gaddini again was top qualifier setting fast time with a 1.1 seconds gap on emanuel gaddini took charge again from the start and held the pace over emanuel through lap five on lap six emanuel worked his way by gaddini then led the next 10 laps before capturing his second win of the weekend gaddini earned for another second place finish when the smoke cleared emanuel topped gaddini by six points for the season end championship fight respectively fs renny damon teammate to vince gaddini set every mark he could in fs saturday before he scored the win and a solid third overall finish one of only four cars to finish on the lead lap after winning fs yesterday then inviting everyone at the track to feast with his race team damon was on track for another flawless race day early sunday morning it started out great when he set fast time in qualifying damon then began to repeat his performance from yesterday running first in class

page 6 cal club news november 2011 chris emanuel hunts down vince gaddini in formula atlantic emanuel eventually work by gaddini to capture the race win baer images photo and third overall behind the fa entries but on lap 11 he encountered problems he ended up down one lap but still leading his class he raced his #47 pro formula mazda to the checkered where he collected his second fs win of the weekend fc dion johnston was a group 1 player in his #3 van diemen formula continental entry by putting in a solid drive saturday collecting the fc win and a fourth overall finish he was the last of four cars on the lead lap he did even better sunday by again scoring the fc win but improved to third overall with a tighter gap on the overall winner by several seconds two wins for johnston in his only appearance this year was good enough to give him the points necessary to tie les phillips for the 2011 cal club formula continental title one of many notches in his championship belt dsr james kuhns showed up even though he already clinched the 2011 dsr title for a bit of fun and to do shake down before the pacific coast road racing championships later this month kuhns mixed it up with the large 3dcarbon s2000 packed finishing first in class both days extending his dave ferguson collected the 3dcarbon s2 win sunday baer images photo championship points lead overall saturday he was 8th and sunday he finished 13th 3dcarbon cup s2000 13 s2 drivers showed up for the final 3dcarbon cup event of the year and delivered the anticipated show everyone was expecting s2 action was intense from the start on saturday when fast time qualifier ed guenther took quick command of the race then checked out as rivals doug ota and dave ferguson had their hands full racing through the field after starting in the back of the pack for different reasons ota moved up to second by lap six and ferguson improved to third by lap eight from there it was follow the leader with guenther way out front after 15 laps the checkered flew for guenther in first ota in second and ferguson filled the 3dcarbon cup podium in third sterling ellsworth raced hard and earned fourth ahead of bob lovenson who rounded out the top five s2 entries sunday morning ferguson was seen thrashing on the nose section of his car in preparation to bid for the win he did just that after setting fast time in qualifying he led every lap and was in charge of his game it was uneventful compared to his mad dash from last position yesterday he was hooked up for sure driving on rails before he collected the

november 2011 3dcarbon cup win 8.2 seconds ahead of guenther in second ota finished third ellsworth and stu hansen finished fourth and fifth ted gunther dominated the 3dcarbon s2 season and quite deservedly earned his second championship trophy along with the 3dcarbon donated $1,200 fast forward engineering gift certificate group 3 spec miata elliott who skeer said a spectator along the fence line as the first spec miata race of the weekend unfolded skeer a 17-year-old scca san diego region member set fast time in qualifying in his first cal club race raising eyebrows throughout the paddock when the green flag flew skeer had to contend with 2011 cal club spec miata champion clement lee who d either be muscling for position or filling his mirrors it was some of both on the first lap but skeer quickly gained the advantage and set the race pace with lee in pursuit grant westmorland darwin felix and eric richter were in pursuit but off the pace of the top two skeer led every lap with lee right there the entire race skeer held his advantage collecting the win with a 3.3 second cushion over lee in second westmorland led the battle to the finish where he filled the final step on the box in third felix finished fourth with richter right there rounding out the top five sunday was a new day and brought a new set of challenges in spec miata westmorland skeer and lee who were first second and third in qualifying agreed to start in the last three spots on the grid to add a excitement to the program at the start felix took command of the race pace and held his advantage through lap three when richter gained the advantage richter looked like he was on his way to collect his first spec miata win but the force was coming they were getting closer as laps wound down but it still looked like richter would be able to hold them off it wasn t to be for richter as westmorland got by on lap 11 both skeer and lee did the same on the next circuit pushing richter back to fourth cal club news page 7 cal club bog member gayle jardine gets credit for reviving the question box where you can get any question answered and find all kinds of cool stuff to buy too allan coy photo westmorland led to the checkered where he tallied a very impressive win just 0.06 of a second ahead of skeer in second and 0.3 of lee in third richter earned a solid fourth and rounding out the top five was felix group 4 ff srf f500 fv ff jerry andersen raced his swift db1 to a pair of formula

november 2011 missed the race as pitt let it hang out and was leading by the third circuit he darted away from the pack and nearly lapped powers who finished second in class bailey tallied third four laps down ite robert green in his noble m400 was on rails this weekend setting a pace good enough to collect a new track record of 2:05.325 on saturday in order to collect his win on saturday he had to get by paul gassen who led the first six laps once green moved by gassen he raced to the checkered and collected his first win of the weekend gassen finished second ahead of bob madrid in third green s second win of the weekend came a bit easier with gassen sidelined with mechanical woes at sunday s start this left madrid to challenge green for the win gassen was too strong as he easily scored the victory ahead of madrid in second place its jason cress had his mazda rx-7 hooked up and on the move all weekend with a pair of solid races he earned two its wins and a new track record of 2:11.747 saturday cress tallied an impressive 3rd overall and sunday earned 4th ita four cars showed up in ita with 2011 champion naji dahi cleaning house as expected he nailed a pair of wins for his effort challenging dahi on saturday was darwin felix frank honsowetz and david knowles dahi was too strong as felix tallied second ahead of honsowetz in third and knowles in fourth mihai mantea entered ita sunday to help shake down dahi but ended up battling for second he held the runner up position until felix got by on lap five behind dahi at the checkered was felix in second ahead of mantea in third and honsowetz in fourth stu james spurling suffered a dnf on saturday in his bmw z3 but collected a win sunday in stu saturday he only finished seven laps but sunday collected a solid 8th overall finish cal club news page 9 james spurling under pressure from pro7 driver michael judy spurling won stu and judy finished first in pro7 dennis baer photo naji dahi stands tall on the ita podium flanked by darwin felix left and mihai mantea right dennis baer photo pro7 michael judy dusted the cobwebs off his mazda and set the weekend s race pace in pro7 while earning a new track record of 2:16.172 in the process saturday he set fast time in qualifying then proceeded to lead every lap before he nailed the win ahead of carl johnk and jim rueff in second and third judy continued controlling the pro7 pace on sunday with another fast time in qualifying he wasted no time and led from the start to tally his second win of the weekend 2.7 seconds ahead of rueff in second position itb sandro cavedoni pushed his #45r vw to fast time in qualifying saturday morning ahead of class rival rodger ward from the start ward gained the advantage over cavedoni then led the first three laps on the fourth circuit cavedoni took command of the itb race pace and held his advantage to the checkered claiming the win ahead of ward in second who earned a new track record of 2:20.420 day two for itb did not include cavedoni he was out ward did his thing and captured the win and a 11th place overall finish ward sealed the 2011 cal club itb championship ahead of cavedoni in second hp mike bachman raced his 1960 sprite mki to a pair of wins in h production saturday bachman earned a solid 15th overall result and sunday improved to 14th.
