term one term two term three term four wednesday 2 february to friday 15 april monday 2 may to friday 15 july monday 1 august to friday 7 october monday 25 october to friday 16 december 106 half days 108 half days 100 half days 78 half days total 392 half days school hours 9:00 am school starts 10:20 am morning interval 10:25am children move off to play 10:45 am end of morning interval brain break see set criteria later in booklet 12:45 1:00 pm lunch eating 1:00 pm children dismissed to play 1:30 pm end of lunch 3 00 pm school day finishes attendance and rolls it is compulsory for children to attend school unless there is a legitimate reason for not doing so if any student shows a serious pattern of non attendance it needs to be brought to the attention of the lester stephens if possible please follow matters of absence up with parents also record all names of absent pupils accurately each day on your class absence sheet when you call the roll at 9:00 am if you have been notified of an absence indicate this with a tick in blue or black beside the child`s name pupils who have left the school are to remain noted on the absence sheet until advised otherwise by the office the office will check phone messages for daily absence information and this will be indicated on your absence sheet with a red tick pupils with unexplained absences will be followed up by the office with phone calls home letters or visits by ap truancy officer depending on the nature and frequency of the absence absence sheets must be sent to the office by 9:30 at the latest children who arrive at school after the bell must to check in with the office this is very important and saves staff and families undue stress about filling in your roll this is a very important legal document and must be done correctly blue pen only for attendance red for absentees count the number of times at school not the number of absences count in teacher only days as absent miss lines between boys and girls last names first e tidy no pencil no twink please b please don`t leave gaps in days or forget to mark the afternoons if in doubt please ask for clarification for the first two weeks we will take rolls on class lists until we have a clear indication of children who have left or arrived thank you for your care and attention.

due to the length of the middle block 10:50 am 12:30 pm we allow classes to have a 5 minute brain break this is simply to have a drink go to the toilet stretch and then get back to work this is also a time for teachers to have 5 minutes to get a drink and use the bathroom etc this is not a time for children to run freely and disrupt other classes learning or to play gutter board etc please respect the classrooms around you and manage your children`s brain break by setting clear expectations and procedures you may need to reiterate this at a team level there will not be a bell to signal brain break simply gauge your children`s need for a break.

teaching and learning tuesday staff meetings draft agenda week 1 writing focus week 3 ict cluster teacher to teacher professional development hosted and run br maungatapu school week 5 information literacy meeting week 7 writing focus week 9 writing week 10 term 3 overview and planning then into team meetings week 11 still to be determined the content of staff meetings needs to be flexible to accommodate necessary changes when things arise we appreciate your flexibility and support team meetings teams are encouraged to meet on alternative weeks to our staff meetings we would like teams to foster a balance of nuts and bolts material and professional discussion learning i.e team planning assessment moderation ict updates pd and other communication these meetings will be organised by syndicate leaders in consultation with their teams tuesday morning admin meetings these administration meetings will be from 8:15 am 8:30 am in the staffroom the purpose of these meetings will be to cover nuts and bolts notices and communicate up coming events for the following week it will also be a chance to share children of concern if staff wish to share in this meeting they are encouraged to email lester before friday morning with items to share 15 20 minutes is not long and lester will prioritise the agenda to maximise the time attendance and punctuality is a must why tuesday it allows us to have one day dedicated to meetings and frees up the rest of the week dancing with data during each crest assembly keryn will be withdrawing a syndicate team to have dialogue with form pathways forward and explore progress and areas for development around what the data and professional judgement is saying about children`s learning keryn will make contact with teams via team leaders giving about a weeks notice.

ict thursday ict workshops and ideas sharing optional but some may come highly recommended there will be times when our main staff meeting will be based around the integration of ict into classroom programmes week 2 ict into literacy week 4 ict into our science week 8 ict sharing ideas and inspiring others week 9 ideas for term 3 brainstorm session inquiry learning interest group meetings these are open forum voluntary meetings to support staff in the understanding and exploration of implementing inquiry learning into classroom programmes these will be held on thursday mornings from 7:30 8:15am in rangi-a-tea some of these will dove tail with the ci meetings at the university week 3 c.i enthusiast meeting at waikato university presentation from deborah fraser and barb white 3:30 5:00 pm week 7 sharing our thoughts and ideas on curriculum integration and inquiry and how we implement it into our programme each attendee to share for a couple of minutes and have a few minutes questions dialogue road map meetings throughout term 2 keryn and lester will continue to visit your classrooms as part of the appraisal and attestation process that we explained through our term one road map meetings should your teams want another roadmap meeting to confirm clarify and outline the process and expectations please invite one or more of us to one of your syndicate meetings i n week 5 teachers will be released to meet with keryn and lester to work through a dialogic process around their practice and performance we will be asking teachers to bring along data and share their understanding and strategies leadership team meetings these are held on monday afternoons either in the literacy centre or in sue`s office from 3:30 5:00pm the meetings are made up with a range of content discussions about school goals and directions reflecting on practice sharing successes moderating learning outcomes leadership development whole school nuts and bolts and powerful learning ideas minutes of these meetings will be taken and available for staff to visit should they wish unit holders unit holders are encouraged to meet regularly to map out the directions and purpose of their responsibilities to plan pathways and to reflect on achievements gauging progress made.

stepping up to the crest assemblies we will be having crest assemblies every second friday morning from 9 30 10:20 am approximately the purpose of these assemblies is to have fun celebrating how students have stepped up to the crest in their learning we will be having singing sharing certificates and acknowledgements each teacher gives a crest award to one child which will be presented by sue during the assembly please refer to the timetable below for the week your syndicate will be presenting and leading week 1 3 5 7 9 11 team anyone who wants sharing singing etc lester to lead it senior syndicate sharing whanau syndicate sharing junior syndicate middle school sharing end of term wrap up lester to lead cool bananas organisation this year cool bananas our visiting bible in schools programme happens in our school hall every thursday afternoon terms one and three have two sessions 1:30 pm 2:10 pm for juniors and 2:15 pm 2:55 pm for the middle school teachers will be notified of start dates early in term one terms two and four are for senior students with sessions from 2:15 pm 2:55 pm team hui teams my choose to have team hui where you get together to share and celebrate learning promote a positive team culture and build on a shared expectations for learning and behaviour 2011 disco s our school and community association help run and organise our school discos traditionally the junior discos start at 6:00 pm and finish at 7:00 pm then our senior disco begins at 7:15 pm and concludes by 8:30 pm although the association help organise these as teachers we need to support these discos as well to do this we have arranged a roster system to help titivate the hall we all need to take an overall responsibility to attend and support behaviour and the disco term 1 seniors team term 2 junior team term 3 whanau team term 4 middle team it is great to support our community and make a contribution to wider school activities.

c rest ommunication espect responsibility ducation endeavour elf esteem eamwork what is the crest and how does it work the concept of stepping up to the crest to be an effective citizen was birthed through a collaborative process in 2008 and has evolved over the past three years the crest is our vision and learner map underpinning all that we do at maungatapu school it aligns with the nzc`s key competencies and has them embedded implicitly in the crest model we have infused the concepts and notions in the crest model into our professional learning our assemblies classroom and school culture and our inquiry model i.e the notions that fit into education and endeavour give licence to explore the beliefs and practices that surround powerful learning the crest model is not to be set in stone we encourage teachers to help it evolve and develop further as our community of learners evolves and develops a full poster of the crest and the indicators are further in this booklet.

stepping up to the crest is about being a citizen of maungatapu primary school communicating being respectful and responsible applying ones self to learning and challenges developing and modelling positive self esteem and working together as a team in a range of cooperative and interdependent situations to encourage this allowing for opportunities to articulate what stepping up to the crest is all about and to celebrate those who do we have our crest awards these are to given out to children who are being positive and effective citizens of our maungatapu school community each fortnight at our crest assemblies mrs horne will present these awards to the students please have them filled in and handed to sue by the beginning of the assembly each teacher will get a blank award in their cubby holes ready for the assembly we encourage you to notify parents when children are receiving these awards so they can attend the crest assemblies maungatapu school crest award awarded to for thanks for stepping up to the crest date signature communication r e self esteem t eamwork espect responsibility ducation endeavour crest cards crest card draws will take place at each crest assembly the focus for these is the making of wise choices both behaviourally and in learning or as we say stepping up to the crest each child who is drawn out of the bucket is provided with a yummy lunch sponsored by our local bakery michelle lassing is our wonderful crest card coordinator and will draw these cards during the assemblies.

booking of rooms and ict equipment we are working hard to increase and develop our ict equipment what we do have is precious and we have been great at looking after what we have if we continue to value our equipment and foster the care with the children our resources will be able to increase rather than replace and maintain at this stage all our ict equipment is stored in the literacy centre office where alison muir our librarian will issue and return any equipment for you we are looking at building up our resources and we will communicate our purchases and purposes with you av tv video and dvd equipment is stored in the security room by and in rangi-a-tea please return all gear when you have finished with it so others may use it rechargeable batteries for cameras are recharged and housed in lester`s office please return batteries as you collect more we have an excellent facility in my desktop on school zone this is where we book the use of the hall whare toi ict suite rangi-a-tea and equipment av and ict through the calendar facility we can book ahead be specific and identify which dates we need things should we need to we can reiterate this on the notices bulletin board please keep in mind that this is a big school and we need to be considerate of all staff when booking equipment such as projectors cows and cameras if booked and you choose not to use it please remove the booking yourself do not overwrite someone else`s booking tela laptops teachers are welcome and encouraged to take home laptops ministry lease scheme agreement for use outside school hours you need to be responsible for the security of your laptop if it is to be left at school overnight it needs to be put in a locked cupboard or placed in the security room by rangi-a-tea for safe keeping please carry your laptops in the appropriate laptop bags these are all part of the tela laptop scheme also as part of the scheme each teacher needs to undertake ict professional development our volunteer sessions and our staff meetings on ict will support this professional development if you have any issues and or faults with these laptops these need to logged with lester lester will correspond with the tela agency please see ict induction book for further information on the server in s-drive contents to look out for e tap school zone web page updating look out for ict professional development opportunities on thursday afternoons ict team for 2011 lester deirdre kahurangi cathy please see us if you have questions etc over the page is an ict help flow chart.

effective communication at maungatapu school is very important to all of us poor communication can lead to confusion ambiguity and frustration to communicate proactively between teachers we will use our a few simple systems 1 notices book there will be a notices book placed in the staffroom for teachers to write any notices for each other and students this can then be copied and sent around classes to be read out 2 my desk top school zone bulletin board the content on our bulletin board can be for big events that are up and coming i.e life education swimming sports etc there is also a calendar facility on school zone my desk top we encourage you to contribute to this keeping us all in the loop 3 this term booklet has a calendar of events in the front that is available for quick access 4 the whiteboard in the staffroom is another means for communication for activities however can we use the daily notice book and my desk top school zone bulletin board as our primary means of communication school wide 5 tuesday morning admin meetings are another way of ensuring communication is shared in an appropriate and timely manner school newsletters newsletters are sent home every fortnight with the eldest child in each family we recommend that teachers read through the newsletter with your class prior to handing them out contributions to the newsletter need to be submitted lester well ahead of the printing date these are also available on our school website for parents who require them digitally please note students who live in two homes sometimes two notices are required e tap should have this flagged if in doubt please ask sending home notices any class sports cultural and or team notices that are being sent home should be checked through team leaders and keryn or lester this assists with school wide communication and consistency please note 24hours notice for proof reading of notices is strongly advised this shows professional courtesy towards our colleagues a copy also needs to be provided to wendy budd and gaylene mccarthy in the office so they can field any enquiries on your behalf take messages and be kept in the loop also be aware of split families and where notes need to communicated to two parents sickness relievers if you are requiring a reliever the people to contact are keryn de lacey on 544 3492 or 027 4222403 if you are teaching in the middle and junior school and lester stephens on 5446492 or 027 3271063 if you are teaching in the senior school and puwhariki whanau please call between 6:30 am and 7:00 am if you know that you are requiring a reliever in advance or are feeling sick the night or day before please make arrangements with keryn or lester at school and they will organise the relief work plans should be available for relievers however many will do their own programme but you may need to have something available should they wish please inform relievers if you are on duty where and when etc let them know of buddy classes and anything else that will help the day run smoothly for your students learning and behaviour teacher aides will also contact keryn if they are absent discretionary leave holidays funerals tangi if you wish or need to have leave granted for purposes other than sickness this should be expressed to lester stephens if cleared then lester action or instruct keryn for relievers keryn should not be approached to organise relievers if leave has not been approved through lester.

trip procedures student safety if you are planning a trip with your class team there are some procedures that must to be followed there is a green covered folder in the office with the correct forms and check lists to assist you in preparing your trip thoroughly please discuss with senior teacher and sue notify parents well ahead of time think through and complete rams forms well in advance submitting them to sue if in doubt about systems please ask child safety is the first priority when planning and organising eotc letters informing parents must be sent out in a timely fashion allowing time for permission and payment to be met the latest payments and permissions that will be accepted will be one week out from the event this must be made clear to families in the information sent out from teachers parent permission is an essential requirement no permission no trip risk analysis forms are an non negotiable and must be completed and signed by sue no later than one week from the event if these procedures are not followed then trips will not be permitted to proceed buses transportation for getting to and from school is contracted to the tauranga transport network group lester is charged with the organisation of bus users should you have any enquiries please direct questions and parents to lester there are a few formalities parents need to attend to before children can use the bus service buses for school trips need to be ordered booked through wendy budd in the office.
