howdy volume 1 issue 4 may 2011 inside this issue `dog house 2 the bark school raises money to help missing children ashley jones reporter the ride for missing children is coming to our school on may 20th the jazz band is performing the ride for missing children is a 100 mile bike ride through central new york did you know that every day 2,200 children are reported missing that s a lot some of them run away and some are kidnapped in last year s ride for missing children 443 people were riding the ride for missing children started in 1995 when 7 men rode their bikes from utica to new york city to washington d.c to raise awareness for the missing children two years later there were 43 riding there riders on bicycles for 100 miles from albany to utica miss hawkins will be riding in the ride for missing children this year social studies stuff 2 entertainment news 3 art class 3 school is almost over 3 calendar 4 jokes puzzles 4 marching band begins the 2011 season jessica bates reporter marching band is officially starting it s been a long wait since it ended last year on october 31 st with a good 6th place finish this year they are going to strive hard just like last year if not much harder they haven t been told what songs their show is going to include but they are waiting impatiently to find out for those people who don t know what marching band is it s a group of people who work together for months and strive to be best by playing music they also have to remember specific choreography the guard will also be learning new ways to spin your flag that you may never have known before it s made up of a band proper the wind instruments the battery drums the pit bells and the guard the people who spin the flags marching band couldn t get any better we have an awesome director miss morgan you even get to see her crazy side she keeps us in line but also lets us have an amazingly fun time ask any marching band member some of our greatest memories were made during our marching band season once you re in marching band it pretty much becomes your life sometimes you see the people in marching band more than you see your own family also you become so close to these people you see all the time that you pretty much are a family by the way to all you marching band members even though last year s over don t forget peanut butter crackers comics 4 weekly polls 100 of the newspaper staff did not hold any polls this issue please stay tuned for the june issue for our major-pollextravaganza students participate in solo music festival ben taylor reporter n.y.s.s.m.a is a music program that grades a musician s solo performance and tells them how to improve on their instrument n.y.s.s.m.a stands for new york state school music association the musicians who went to n.y.s.s.m.a this year are seth cormican and ben taylor from the seventh and eighth grade band from the fifth grade band colin arquette janessa rubino julia depietro serenity morris and maddie garcia performed from the sixth grade band that attended were will mulroney alyssa sears tara quinn hannah szmurlo josh drake zach merritt and michael vecchio the festival took place at herkimer high school and all 14 students did an incredible job miss morgan is very proud of all of her students stomp ben taylor reporter stomp came to our school on april 5th they came for their fundraiser stomp out hunger for the fundraiser we collected seven full boxes of food the group stomp uses household items to make music the group stomp had a little performance it was about twenty minutes long they proved that they can make music out of everything by looking through the boxes of food and using things to make music they got the crowd into it during the performance stomp accidentally forgot a drum stick and now it s hanging in mrs morgan s room the staff at the bark would like to welcome our new students to westmoreland middle school we hope you find our school to be welcoming and fun we are very glad to have you here if you are interested in writing for the paper please come to our next meeting have something you want to say write a letter and let us hear about it letters should be delivered to miss morgan or mr fehlner by the third thursday of the month.

entertainment news dohnovan mccarthy reporter littlebigplanet is a game for psp and ps3 about a sack boy traveling the universe to learn all the secrets the game is so cool because you can make your own levels and design your own sack boy you can also download levels and outfits online it won in eight categories out of 10 nominations at the aias interactive achievement awards including outstanding achievement in art direction visual engineering game design game direction and outstanding innovation in gaming and was judged family game of the year console game of the year and as overall game of the year also littlebigplanet was judged best playstation 3 game at the 2008 spike video game awards and was given the awards for best new debut best game design best technology and the innovation award there is a second littlebigplanet already out for ps3 which i hear is even more customizable i give little big planet a 8 out of 10 helen gray reporter wait till helen comes is written by mary downing hahn it is about molly who is the oldest sibling of her family michael her younger brother and heather heather is their seven year old step sister molly and michael s mother jean marries heather s father dave when dave and jean decide to move to the country side molly and michael get upset heather doesn t trust or like molly michael or jean she blames molly for everything that happens to her when molly takes heather for a walk she discovers that heather has been meeting with someone but no one else lives anywhere nearby for miles one day molly decides to follow heather out and realizes she has been meeting with a ghost named helen helen and heather both share a similar secret molly is stunned but nobody not even michael will listen to her about helen then helen makes her move she destroys michael jean and molly s rooms after heather comes home with a locket that no one bought her molly decides to investigate she follows heather once more to the pond and life story of bethany hamilton bethany hamilton was born in hawaii to a family of surfers one halloween morning bethany went surfing and a 14-foot tiger shark bit off her left arm she lost over 60 of her blood and had many surgeries she thought her surfing career was over a month after the attack bethany was back in the water two months later bethany placed fifth in a competition and kept trying harder about a month later she went to another competition and did the same she tried so hard that the girl the she was enemies with let her join the 1st place standing position with her due to the fact that she did such a fantastic job for her condition i would definitely recommend the movie soul surfer lucas miller reporter minecraft is a game based in a strange world you are all alone unless you are playing multiplayer obviously and you must build a home before night falls you can make your home out of wood until you have enough materials to make it out of other blocks such as cobblestone blocks and stone there are many facets to the game right now it is in version beta 1.5 it has different types of weather and over 200 blocks and items you have to survive the night from dreadful monsters like zombies giant spiders skeleton archers slimes and the worst of them all the creeper they explode and ruin your stuff you can spare yourself the trouble with the monsters by playing on peaceful instead of easy normal or hard in this wonderful world explorer game you can build a house using tools you can craft using a crafting table you can use the crafting tables to make tools to cut down trees and mine blocks of ore with the ore and wood you can make all kinds of tools you can make wooden stone iron gold and eventually diamond that you can use to mine obsidian but sadly no obsidian tools you can also make something much much eerier but enough of the dark constructions there are also plenty of add-ons you can download free texture packs and mods by google searching minecraft texture packs go to a website called minecraftforum.com this is a very fun game it s creator s name is markus notch persson he lives in sweden and he developed a company called mojang to produce and sell the game right now the game costs 15 euros about twenty amwerican dollars you can get it from www.minecraft.net it is is a very fun game i give it a 9 ½ out of 10 stars carve me a slice of that garrett mcgovern reporter in art class we are carving designs out on linoleum boards for the printmaking project for this we have to first sketch out a design to carve on the linoleum then we have to draw our designs on the linoleum third we have to carve out our designs that we drew miss t told us that where we carve away the linoleum the ink will not show but where we leave it alone the ink will hit creating the design i am doing a weird cat design for my carving yesterday in class we practiced carving on a little piece of linoleum it is so easy to carve i think this project will be easy but messy it will take a while to finish this project but i think it will be worth it miss t showed us the safe way to carve and all the safety procedures yesterday i think this will be a really fun project after seeing miss t s examples they were really cool i wish everyone luck on their projects school is almost over stephen cosco reporter i bet that all of you are just waiting and hoping for school to end as soon as possible after a grueling 33 weeks everybody should be did i say 33 weeks yes i did that means that there are only about seven weeks of school left until summer vacation how many of you are doing a little cheer inside your head or aloud right now i know that i can t wait until the warm weather when you can take naps outside and not do homework the only bad part about this is that there are the dreaded finals and state testing that is a few weeks of working one of the best parts is the school s annual fun day for the fifth graders that don t know it is a day near the end of the year that the school has rented a ton of fun stuff where we go outside and have fun all day after that just a few days until we get off for 2 ½ months summer is in
