o w ff volume 1 issue 1 february 2011 inside this issue math news 2 the bark middle school releases newspaper helen gray and dan muller reporters our superior editors mr fehlner and miss morgan still are and have been working tremendously hard to prepare and put out our first ever westmoreland middle school student newspaper after 10 minutes of excruciating voting the staff and editors of the paper had finally come up with the final decision the bark mr fehlner a 7th grade english teacher and miss morgan our band teacher have decided to create a newspaper to be given out to every student every staff member and the board of education during an interview with mr fehlner he had donated some of his expertise about the on-going inner workings of the newspaper to us it is his hope that the students will enjoy reading about features comics academics and sports of most interest to the adults such as the teachers supervisors staff and board of education they will most likely be interested in what is written about their departments the newspaper will be all stories are complete it will all fit together like puzzle pieces in our first official issue of the bark we would like to specifically introduce the 7th and 8th grade staff members of the paper first we have the 7th grade staff of the newspaper the 7th grade staff is danny muller sabrina christensen mackenzie ching savannah decker megan bush andrew clanton garrett mcgovern lucas miller dylan talma jessica bates stephen cosco cassidy hulser dohnovan mccarthy ben taylor ashley jones bryan buchholz dalton mccord matt calogero and kayla vanbenschoten the 8th grade staff is made up of helen gray austin nogas lindsey cornacchia marina deangelo caylie fluharty lauren banovic nicole pearson and jon carr the editors are miss morgan and mr fehlner science rocks social studies stuff english it s what s for dinner 2 art-tacular isn t that special 2 entertainment news art reviews 3 what is all that rocket `dog house 3 calendar of events february 2011 4 jokes puzzles comics 4 about life at westmoreland and what is going on in westmoreland mr fehlner thinks that the biggest challenge now is that it is the first issue and so no one knows how it s going to turn out in future papers it will be important to try to keep everyone interested and excited about their reporting assignments they also know that deadlines and finding new stories will always be a challenge but in the end when the weekly polls what do you like better bunnies onions tables or rocks 219 people voted 46.12 bunnies 10.04 onions 5.45 tables 38.35 rocks global predictions for 2011 ben taylor reporter dohnovan mccarthy reporter the steelers will win the superbowltm because the bears don t have good enough cornerbacks to defend the steelers receiving core the bears don t have an explosive enough offense to stop the number one defense in the nfl the bears quarterback has never been to the superbowl so he is inexperienced he might be able to pick apart the steelers cornerbacks the problem for the bears is the steelers strong safety troy polamalu we also think that global warming will not be stopped because there are too many factories that don t care about the environment and keep putting smoke into the atmosphere we think that more jobs will be made in this new year and the economy will turn around we think that a war will start between north korea and south korea because a north korean torpedo hit a south korean ship we think that more countries will go green because we all don t want the environment to go down the drains the world wants to save the planet and make the world a better place to live for our families in years to come we think that the electronics industries will go to a whole new level like 3d tvs game systems and video games also we think the playstation 4 xbox 370 and wii 2 will be released soon also we think that budgets will get cut even more this year what was your favorite movie of 2010 223 people voted 36.77 toy story 3 25.56 how to train your dragon 22.42 harry potter 7 part 1 15.25 eclipse hey teachers don t see your class represented in this month s paper don t worry we re saving you for next month s issue!

math news lauren banovic reporter the sixth grade students are doing many fun things in their math class zachary merritt who is in sixth grade talked about what he is learning in his math class zachary said that he was learning about rates he is learning about all different kinds of rates zachary also said that he is learning these rates from a teacher named mr perrault zachary enjoys learning from mr perrault and says he is a fun teacher mr perrault teaches fifth and sixth grade math many kids enjoy learning from this teacher zachary says that he is doing pretty well with rates and he is not struggling jessica bates reporter in mrs burke s seventh grade math class on january 11 mrs burke had recently started letting her students use the classroom performance system the classroom performance system is an electronic system that uses little remotes that you point at a receiver to guess an answer then the results instantly appear on the smart board related to math they show the percent of people that got the answer correct in a bar graph and pie graph mrs burke said the thing the kids in her class have most trouble with is showing all their work to solve this problem she has the kids figure out the answers to multiple choice questions in their math workbooks and then lets them use the remotes to make it more fun mrs burke is doing all she can to make math fun and easier for everyone science rocks garrett mcgovern reporter austin nogas reporter do you know what fifth graders are learning about in science well i do they are learning about earth science in this unit right now they are learning about rocks and minerals and how the earth changes this year the fifth grade is going to learn about life classifying plants and animals cells body systems microscopes and sound mr lolonde said the whole fifth grade curriculum has changed this year this year fifth graders will be presenting things to the class mr lolonde also said middle schoolers are always great this year starting out mr lolonde thinks it s going great but his schedule is very fast and busy teaching all of fifth and sixth graders the fifth grade science class is getting prepared for sixth grade science this year the 8th grade in mrs.granza class currently learning about are starting to learn about the circulatory system the circulatory system is the way the heart pumps the blood all over the body the honors class students are learning about genetics which is the study of the raw building blocks of life social studies stuff quality writing and to have better quality work mrs leman wants the for the past few months the seventh grade to do well on assignseventh grade social studies class have ments for semester two mrs leman been working on a pioneer simulation and in general thinks that the seventh a diary book project to go along with it grade should work on organization seventh graders have enjoyed this unit skills the quality of your work and mrs leman says that she wants you sev focusing more for the next semester enth graders to increase your amount of mrs leman says that the next unit the seventh grade will learn about is the civil war matt calogero reporter english it s what s for dinner caylie fluharty reporter in 8th grade english we are learning about drama we have also been writing and acting out plays we just finished writing a second part of the time machine by h.g wells the time machine is about a guy named george who travels to the year 9095 in his time machine he meets the eloi who are simple-minded humans the eloi are small people who are scared of one thing and one thing only the morlocks the 8th grade class just finished their second book report miss hawkins gave the students a choice of what book they wanted to read she is now deciding if we should read monster written by walter dean myers jessica bates reporter on january 3rd in mrs scoones 4 period 6th grade english class all the students were working hard learning their spelling words in their new individual spelling workbooks they read different strategies that help you to remember how to spell the words that week s spelling words were plural words while writing their new words they practiced writing in cursive i m glad they are required to learn cursive again when i was younger i barely had the chance to learn any cursive at all i don t doubt that they all did well on there spelling quiz later that week they sure wo rk ed ha rd while i was there th art-tacular sabrina christensen reporter ject called repoussee this project stands for ancient metal work of relief and is made by silver copper gold and tooling foil all of her fifth grade students have enjoyed doing this project these well behaved fifth graders have done a project that only involved the color of the metal that they have chosen isn t that special matthew calogero reporter well it is the end of the first semester and in home and careers mrs kirkland has thought that the six and seventh grade on average most students are doing well and are passing mrs kirkland will offer in a little while but only for the seventh grade so you sixth graders better do a good job for the rest of the semester for the past couple of weeks the sixth grade have been working on their sewing projects diligently and have been enjoying this project the seventh grade have recently been going over their nutrition unit and have also been watching the movie supersize me a movie about a man going on a mcdonalds diet for thirty days if you are a new student coming in you might want to talk to someone who has already taken home and careers because mrs kirkland s expectations haven t changed for semester two art 5 miss t and her fifth grade students have just finished a pro art 6 miss t and her well behaved sixth graders are finishing the pencil animal project this project involves making animals out of pencils that can be any size and flexible the sixth graders have been enjoying this entertainment news stephen cosco reporter helen gray reporter cassidy hulser reporter i love justin bieber for many reasons the most amazing reason is he s got the best hair in the world i love this cd it is very good justin is an amazing artist he has three cds out already one is called my world another one is called my world 2.0 his most recent cd is called my world acoustic my world acoustic is a mix of the better songs he made but he plays them with the acoustic guitar his cds have a mix of ballads and dance songs justin s acoustic cd has mostly his ballads justin bieber was discovered on youtube by scooter buran his record company is island def jam justin bieber grew up in stratford canada justin bieber s first album came out november 17 2009 his second album came out march 23 2010 his acoustic album came out november 25 2010 he has just released a single named pray he also made a music video for it justin bieber likes to think of himself of a regular kid he likes to take a day out of every week to just relax and play his xbox toy story 3 was a movie directed by lee the twilight saga movies and books have creunkrich that starred tom hanks as woody also ated quite a controversy over the years from the beginfeaturing tim allen as buzz lightyear and joan ning when the saga s first movie twilight came out cusack as jessie from the perspective of over half the population toy story 3 is about the toys being lost the twilight is an absolute sensation those who do get swept toys are supposed to be put into the attic but instead up in the romance between an ordinary girl named bella andy s mom thinks they are supposed to be donated to who has just moved all the way from sunny arizona to her a daycare center the toys think it s nice in the day dad s hometown of forks in the olympic peninsula in the care center but woody knows they were given away by beginning she thinks that she won t enjoy forks in the accident all of the other toys think that andy just slightest bit but soon she becomes infatuated with eddidn t want them anymore then when the toys finally ward cullen a local vampire just as you would expect a try to escape they realize that the toys in the day life threatening idiot to she fell in love with a vampire as care are evil and won t let them leave now woody she grows closer to forks and edward and experiences needs to rescue the toys how will pain and love she decides she wants to become a vampire he do it watch to find out like edward just so she never has to leave him when a blood lusted vampire decides i would definitely recommend this that no matter what he will kill bella movie to everybody and i give it 4.5 out of 5 stars personally i love this movie because it has romance mystery sadness and adventure all typed and edited into a book that has sold over 25,000,000 copies world wide art review austin nogas reporter the mona lisa by leonardo davinci was one of many mysterious paintings painted in the 16th century one of the greatest mysteries about this painting is why is she smiling there are millions of theories as to why but none have been correct there are many interesting things about the mona lisa for example she originally had eyebrows but she plucked them because that was the fashion of the time period also the mona lisa was stolen numerous times by many art thieves starry night by vincent vangogh was painted in 1889 the town and the spiris bush the giant bush in the painting were vangogh s favorite part of the painting one interesting fact about the painting is that vangogh hated the one part of the starry night that many of people love most he hated the way the stars turned out many letters to his brother proved this that he disliked how it turned out what is all that racket andrew clanton reporter hey all you westmoreland middle school students have you talked to your friends about band lately if so you should know that for the upcoming pops concert the fifth and sixth grade band will be performing the flintstones meet the jetsons chariots of fire and dem bones the seventh and eighth grade band will be performing bumble bones the mission impossible theme defying gravity and selections from grease my personal favorite is bumble bones because it has multiple speaking parts and an amazing trombone part from what i ve heard from the most amazing band teacher in the world miss morgan this should be the best pops concert that she will ever conduct stephen cosco reporter in seventh grade music we are playing keyboards we are writing down the notes and then learning to play them it is a lot of fun learning to play keyboards we had to choose between about seven songs including the saints go marching in and amazing grace while one half of the class is tapping away on their keyboards the rest of the class is making a poster about someone famous or a type of instrument in the computer lab we are looking up something that we like not just something the teacher told us to if you look in the seventh grade hallway then you will see some of the posters i myself did the band hollywood undead the posters all seemed great also when everybody was done with keyboard everybody met up in the computer lab to finish `dog house caylie fluharty reporter marina deangelo reporter although volleyball season has ended another winter season of modified basketball has begun the modified girls team actually has two teams this year the team was split up for there to be eight girls on the a team and seven girls on the b team marina deangelo and tayla genther were given the honor to be this year s captains their coach mary barber was busy prepping the girls for their first game at west canada on tuesday january 18 the game ended up being cancelled due to a snow day you could have watched them in action on january 20 during their first home game against poland although the a team lost 26-20 it was an amazing first game marina deangelo led the team with 7 baskets while tayla genther helped with 2 jessica vellone made a rebound shot the b team was crushed 18-1 the one shot was made by claire barron with a foul shot the boys also have two teams david hester and dylan hannaford were given the opportunity to be the team s captains this year the a team is being coached by tim andron while cj cantil is coaching the b team the boys first home game against west canada on the 18th was also cancelled due to bad weather the boys game on thursday january 20th was scheduled to be played at poland the b team creamed poland 4012 while
