volume 85 issue 2 bailey couch editor-in-chief trick-or-treating gives treats to the less fortunate cil will also be doing a battle of the classes this tradition normally brings out the best and worst in shs students and teachers as they fight to join either mrs tammy davis s or mr jason bagwell s sides and try to bring in the most canned goods possible students were able to bring cans to their homeroom class and the class would choose its allegiance the cans collected from this event will be donated with the cans from halloween night but this night of trick or treating is not just for the clearing house for many student council members this is a exciting night they get to dress up and have fun my favorite memory of last year was when emily and aleesha hit every single house before our group had a chance to said cassandra simone 12 anyone can participate in this event even if they are not in student council according to aleesha simone 12 this is a good thing to get involved in especially if you enjoy halloween it s a chance to get dressed up and have fun with a valid reason as an excuse it is for charity aleesha said for anyone who would like to know more about getting technology to benefit them in class while other students in mrs jerrell s journalism class use pc desktops all of the studentsof the freshman class received macbooks this year photo by bailey couch scsd2 continues with 21st century technology hunter steinkamp business manager concerning the 21st century teaching and learning initiative the new name for 1:1 there should be some major changes coming up in the near future as many teachers have speculated scsd2 officials are considering switching at least partially to some form of tablet instead of macbooks said assistant superintendent dr marc slaton all we re trying to do is do what we already do through technology said slaton slaton reminds that 21st century learning is a k-12 initiative he said that different grade levels will probably utilize different technology such as more advanced devices for higher grades so in the future some students may find themselves using macbooks some using a tablet and some using something such as an ipod he also mentioned that tablets are not currently advanced enough for the tests that freshman and sopho mores have to take so underclassmen may possibly have macbooks and upperclassmen with a tablet or some other combination in all honesty a macbook is a cadillac said slaton although tablets are not quite as nice they are considerably less expensive and can do most of the things a regular computer can he said we have a plan based on what we can afford currently said slaton whenever it comes to picking out actual devices slaton said that no decision has been made and no device has been tabled i don t think you ever take any device off the radar screen he said slaton said that the main reason for all of this new technology is the progressing technology of the 21st century it s here and it s now he said slaton warned that all teachers should start to prepare for 21st century technology it s not about the device he said it s about the effectiveness of the teacher slaton said that the goal is to make a student s resource one with less limits than a textbook and he thinks that students will find using a computing device more favorable than a textbook another advantage of technology in the classroom besides preparing students for the technological side of life is that students can work on their own level without being either slowed down or advancing too early with the pace of a class said slaton new tech freshman kaitlyn couch is not a big fan of her macbook that getting a tablet would be cool but it would be hard to type she said on the other hand new tech freshman christopher knight said it s tablets just an oversized ipod the macbooks are more advanced he said computers are not the only project going on with the 21st century initiative another project being discussedwill put smart boards in all of the math classrooms slaton said that this would likely happen at the start of the new fiscal year in january on friday nov 4 the 34:4word bible study group at the first christian church will be hosting a community wide movie night for both teenagers and adults the group will be showing the 2011 movie soul surfer pg about a teenage surfer who was attacked by a shark the movie will be free but concessions will be sold at the movie and the profits will be used to support a mission organization the international disaster emergency services ides is a group of individuals dedicated to helping those in need after disasters the money raised from concessions will go toward ides to help those involved in the tornado disaster in joplin missouri the movie will be shown at the first christian church s youth house known as the rock the rock is located just south of scottsburg high school on highway 31 the doors will be opened at 6:30 p.m while the movie will begin at 7 p.m i think it s cool that they re showing it it s a great movie said kaitlyn hollan 10 the 34:4word is a student led bible study that started two years ago for high school students to discuss topics that members of the group decided upon the group made a list of topics and put all of those ideas in a bucket that they draw from weekly to decide what to talk about the name 34:4word comes from the bible 34:4 comes from the bible verse job 34:4 while the word simply stands for god s word the group meets on fridays from 6-8 at the rock although they are not a church affiliated group.

2 october 21 2011 volume 85 issue 2 scottsburg high school 500 s gardner scottsburg in 47170 812 752-8927 www.theboosteronline.com opinion staff editorial it s no secret that scottsburg high school students and staff have endured many changes in the last two years with the addition of new tech high school and the change to semester scheduling things have gone a little off course for students who just want to graduate as you know freshmen and many of the sophomores have received macbooks in place of textbooks while proving to be beneficial this has caused much debate between students who have not received this privilege word has gone around that the school is planning to provide upper classmen and incoming freshmen with some sort of electronic equivalent in the next year but choosing what kind has caused a problem many students have voiced their opinion between ipads macs and pcs we on the booster would like to voice ours after discussing this issue we decided that there is no reason to put students and staff through more if shs updated in technology which would you choose 10.21.11 booster staff editor in chief -bailey couch news editor -bailey couch opinion editor -trent west impossible why put us through the stress of battling two types of electronics when 16 fighting with one is hard 24 the same enough mac books pcs are what the high schools that work building was previously stocked 6 pcs with however with the increase of macbooks from this year s freshmen they are 51 ipads becoming outdated on the other hand ipads are new and perfectly capable of holding up to technologies graph by ever changing standards this survey was taken by ashley elliott copy editor but they are not as appli100 shs students cable for school use we understand that it would be change than is necessary we believe nice to choose your own type of learning that because the school system had style and move on with it but that is not previously decided on macbooks they a luxury that the school can provide we should stick with that decision when all have to agree on one type so why not switching files between systems tran make it as easy on us as we can that s what she michelle amburgey arts entertainment editior should trick-or-treaters have an age limit mollie collins copy editor said shesaid halloween is the time of year where anyone s crazy side can come out it s also where little kids can dress up like their favorite cartoon characters and go around the neighborhood collecting candy these days young adults like to take advantage and dress up and go door to door getting sugary treats i think that s ridiculous call me a grouch if you will but let me ask this what makes trick or treating so fun i get that it s a blast as a child but pushing it at the age of 14-18 is just too much i m not saying that getting dressed up and being with friends at a party is childish but going trick or treating and acting like an eight year old is not something i find enjoyable i m old enough to go out and get my own candy from the store and if i want to dress up then i will but i won t make a fool of myself and go to people s doors acting like a child just to obtain candy there are so many kids in this world that haven t had the chance to go trick or treating yet so why take that away from them these days it s difficult to buy bucket loads of candy to hand out when there are so many kids cities are actually banning teenagers from trick or treating if one gets caught doing it they could get fined $100 or could even go to jail a city in illinois banned teenagers from going trick or treating because parents were afraid the six foot tall kids at their doorsteps were going to harm them i don t really blame them it s perfectly okay to dress up go crazy but why go trick or treating why not just go to a party with your friends and eat candy there there is no point for it i ll just say this act your age some say trick-or-treating is for the elementary school years and middle school is pushing it but let s be honest we were naive and lacking in creativity during that time you either wanted to be a power puff girl or that scream outfit that pumps blood into the mask i never fail to see one of those every year c mon who wants to be that guy now that we are in high school we have more originality to create or buy the perfect halloween costume so why would we stop trick-ortreating right when the costumes become fun and hilarious why would you miss out on the opportunity of being an avatar or michael scott for halloween since i am still in high school i consider myself a kid i realize sometimes we all want to think of ourselves as adults but if you re still in high school then in my opinion you are young enough to be trick-or-treating we are forced to grow up too fast these days always expected to be mature sure we are growing up but you can still be silly sometimes and just have fun like a kid sitting at home and passing out candy is great but save that for the years when it d be creepy to go trick-or-treating like when you re 21 and have a beard i realize that some of you still think it might be a little weird to go door to door by yourself to get candy at the age of 16 or higher to make you more comfortable grab some friends preferably younger ones and go do your thing but whatever you do don t miss out on your last years of getting a bag full of free candy.

10.21.11 opinion 3 ha y ley 2 hayley love opinion columnist staff editorial saving yourself from a sticky situation gum say this word in any high school classroom and you are guaranteed to see some heads turn some of the questions you will hear are hey do you have gum hey can i have a piece of your gum hey what kind of gum do you have the booster staff wants to know why are people so desperate for gum most people in school will basically ask anyone for a piece of gum someone that you have never talked to in your lifetime may be so bold to approach you for that little stick of sugar they even will compliment you or flatter you with a comment before they sneak the question in we at the booster think this is wrong it is wrong to just talk to someone or be kind to someone to just get something people should be genuine and real with others not put on an act to get what they want another problem is when a person pulls out a pack peers attack them often a student who has gum has either spent their own money on it or their parents have purchased it there is something wrong about begging for or snatching at something that you didn t even have to buy if the person paid for it be respectful and let them enjoy what they decided to spend their money on asking for a piece of gum every now and then isn t a big deal but after a while mooching gum can lead to nasty habits sooner than you know it you are asking for pencils paper food or drinks and asking for things begins to spiral out of control pretending to be someone you re not is never a good thing especially if you are just doing it to get something if you see someone that you never talk to that has gum don t pretend like you know them to get a piece let it go it s gum maybe you could even strike up a conversation with them and get to know them for the person they are not what they have words you think shouldn t be in the dictionary hayley love staff writer england we beat you therefore you don t get in our dictionary -zachary hoard 9 ostentatious because who really knows what that means -kaitlyn hollan 10 ain t because it ain t a word and i ain t going to use it -william neace 11 diarrhea it s disgusting who in their right mind wants to know how to spell diarrhea -monte roth 12 staff editorial when technology fails you don t have to your face begins to tingle at such an unruly speed and you can t seem to get enough air the whole class is staring and the world is no longer real everything moves in slow motion until you can finally get calmed down you ve had an anxiety attack because your computer just crashed congratulations you ve become one of the tons of students who solely rely on technology and really wish they would have thought ahead academic hindrances are definitely different than they were years ago regardless of the amount of time you spend on your computer at school relying on your device can cause a big problem for everyone being unprepared when faced with a computer issue is not not uncommon the internet or device does not care if you have a paper due in x amount of minutes and the program you need won t open or if the pages you have revised do not save it could happen anytime and there is nothing you can do after fact you always need to set aside a time to come up with a plan b luckily there are simple steps you can take to not let technology failures get in your way first and foremost save every 10 minutes when working on a paper this will ensure that in the event a problem occurs you do not lose everything for some people with super typing skills this may mean having to save every five minutes it also helps to keep a paper copy as well as a digital one of everything now when i say digital copy saving to your account does not just work you need to have it saved onto a website a flash drive another computer or some other place you can reach it in the event it happens to get deleted from your computer however not all issues strictly involve your device internet failure can also set a huge setback this is when you always need to set aside a time to come up with a plan b it might not be as good as plan a but it is better than being totally clueless as john bender in the 1985 film the breakfast club said screws fall out all the time the world is an imperfect place even though the world is imperfect and you ll always have encountered some problems with computer and internet failures do not let it stop you keep these three steps in mind and you ll do just fine this is so amazing i am so thrilled to be the co-opinion columnist for the booster this year i hope i don t let too many people down with all that i have to say you will learn to know that i m not much of a controversial writer don t get me wrong i love writing about important things but i feel like all the controversial matters have already been way overdone for too long i have a lot to say for legalizing gay marriage abortion legalizing marijuana being young and pregnant religion and topics like that but i want to write about other important matters other matters that often a lot of people skip over so i want to write about the world have you ever just thought about how incredible this world is how we don t just fall off how gravity holds on to us how the world spins itself and all we have to do is breathe well i think we owe it to the world to respect and appreciate it if not then i think we are about to look at a pretty screwed up globe you know when you are at a friend s house and they are brushing their teeth but they keep the faucet running and you know when you re in the car with your parents and they throw their mcdonald s cup out the window remember when you were walking outside and there was a plastic bag on the ground what a waste of two seconds that could have been spent to pick that up what a waste of three seconds that could have been spent to convince your parents to wait for a garbage can to throw that cup out and instead you wasted water instead of using words we have so much to be thankful for but we continue to expect more without consequences we have all these resources that earth creates for us but not all of them are renewable gas and aluminum are two examples of resources that can t be renewed that we take for granted way too harshly if we don t stop wasting everything there won t be anything left to waste the u.s really does have it so well in so many other countries they don t have an ongoing supply of water i m sure some would kill to have some of your toothpaste water so next time your at your friends in the car or even outside don t be afraid to use a couple seconds of your time to help the world if you see litter pick it up and throw it away instead of turning on the air-conditioning strip off some layers carpool the next time you have the chance just raise your voice for the world that can t.

6 features 10.21.11 to ow h photo by trent west throw a halloween party halloween `fashionista trent west opinion editor party city is located in jeffersonville where you can get halloween costumes and party supplies 1 shelby hale sports editor every year while shopping for a halloween costume i always look online and then look at the stores the selection does not even compare there are many places that you can find costumes at like party city and halloween express also at these two stores if you don t find what you want in the store you can order your costume online if they don t fit or you end up not liking it you can take them to the store and trade in or get a refund when buying your halloween costume your preference of buying online or in store is your own but to get the best of both worlds party city is probably your best choice also some costumes at party city can be up to 10-15 cheaper than those at halloween express two other great halloween stores are caufield s novelty and horner novelty caufield s novelty in downtown louisville is a great place to get costumes because it also is open year round and supplies costumes accessories and party decorations whether you re looking for beads to wear to a mardi gras party or trying to put together a halloween costume to enter a contest the costumes at caufield s are high quality not like those cheap thin costumes you ll get out of a bag from walmart horner novelty has three locations two in kentucky and one in indiana one is off of breckenridge lane in louisville while one is off of preston highway in louisville and the main location is off of spring street in jeffersonville in horner novelty carries costumes accessories and party decorations the costumes at horner s are reasonably priced and once again they are not like cheap walmart costumes there are many different halloween games or activities that you can do at your halloween party one of the most popular activities is a bon fire and or a hayride other activities that are popular are bobbing for apples and pumpkin decorating contests if you want to have a more scary themed halloween party you can always create a haunted house haunted woods or a haunted hayride one thing that makes your party fun is having parents or younger siblings dress up as the haunters so that you can enjoy it with your friends photo by shelby hale photo by hyeree ellis photo by shelby hale halloween is a great time to get creative with the food like many parties it is easier to do more finger foods than a sit down meal get creative with your foods instead of the normal pizza and chips go for more for the festive foods candy corn is always a crowd favorite and there are a lot of things that can be done with them one mixture that can be made is a halloween party mix mix regular m&m s with peanuts and candy corn to make a festive halloween snack the key to the perfect halloween snacks is just being creative with the foods you make while thinking of food ideas keep in mind that halloween theme of ghosts pumpkins spiders and so on 3 the key to decorating for your halloween party is to pick a theme if you are going for a scarier theme your decorations will be different than if you are going for more of a fall theme 2 bring out the `trick in trick-or-treat raymond janis photo editor october is well known for its thirtyfirst day halloween halloween is a time when kids go from door to door with a guardian joyfully saying trick or treat and in return get a handful of candy the treat but what happened to receiving a trick after clearly asking trick or treat candy is just a small snack that doesn t make memorable memories unlike getting pranked or tricked at an unknown house there are endless halloween pranks to pull but remember these are little kids mostly so don t terrify them for life one easy prank will consist of a werewolf mask dark clothing and two people when a child rings your door bell and says trick or treat answer the door and role play by asking if they ve seen the neighborhood werewolf after that have someone ready to swiftly creep through the background where the kids will see or have someone pop out from behind a corner a photo by raymond janis while quinton shields 11 is passing out candy and explaining the neighborhood monster kyle shields is creeping up to scare him from behind couch a bush etc another prank will consist of a strobe light a table or porch chair any scary mask you desire and black clothing sit in the chair while wearing your costume and the strobe light is flashing on you as the kids walk up to your doorstep their eyes will be locked onto you thanks to the strobe light make movement so they think you re alive but they aren t sure as they get closer you can scream and jump if it s the right time remember you don t want to terrify a young child forever these are just a couple examples to make halloween a memorable event be creative and have fun this halloween stephanie valencia staff win the entire sectional final although the season is over coach scott craig seemed satisfied with the performance of the team the girls let some games go that they should have won but dominated like they had the potential to do as well as far as the sectional game goes we went up against a columbus north team with 12 seniors and seven division one players they went to the state finals last year and will probably be there again it s a shame we had to play them in the first game i would have rather played them in the championship said craig the team ended the season with an overall record of columbus north 0-6 prevented the team from having their chance of playing in sectional finals against columbus east bringing their final season record to 11-6-1 through the first half of the sectional game defense held columbus north off for the first 32 minutes and spirits were high for the warriors this was the first year playing columbus in their sectional under the new two class system so holding them off for as long as they did was an achievement itself in some of the warriors eyes and those of their coaches we played well against columbus north for only playing them once because we only had a short time to adapt to their playing style but i still wish we accomplished more or played someone else for the first round of sectionals said bryce peters 12 in conference the warriors headed into a favorable game ready to be conference champs but the game soon became the downfall of the season the warriors lost to corydon 0-2 we were conference runners up to a team that went undefeated and unscored upon in conference play though we dominated the possession in the if you are a true harry potter fan then you know about the game quidditch muggle quidditch allows that imaginary sport to come to life the sport was adapted from the wizarding sport in j.k rowling s harry potter book series in the series the main character harry potter is on the quidditch team the entire time he is at hogwarts school the muggle part of the sport is referring to what wizards call regular humans in the book the wizard version of quidditch played midair obviously requires magic so the muggle version of the game had to be adapted to play on the ground to begin playing you must have seven players on each team the location should be about the size of a football field and you should set up three circular goals on each side of the field all players are required to carry a broom between their legs volleyballs should be used as quaffles whereas dodge balls should be used as bludgers the chasers on the team are responsible for scoring with the quaffles their objective is to throw the quaffles in the other team s goals each quaffle in a goal is worth ten points only three chasers are allowed to play at one time the keepers of the team protect the goal their only job is to keep the quaffles away from their goal the beaters have the most interesting job they attempt to hit the opposing team s players with the bludgers they can also block bludgers heading for their own teammates only two beaters can play at one time finally there is one seeker on each team the seeker s primary job is to find the snitch the snitch is a magical object that flies in the harry potter novels but for real life quidditch the snitch is a tennis ball stuffed in a sock the snitch is flown around by a snitch runner that wanders around the playing field the snitch runner is often dressed in white or gold and has wings on the snitch could be considered one of the most crucial elements in the game because once the snitch is found the team that found it wins the game although this sport may seem odd to you many colleges take part in it every year some colleges that have quidditch teams are boston university syracuse university and even harvard i was extremely surprised that this is an actual sport said jordanne oaks 10 it s so cool because i am one of those geeky harry potter fans although many students are on board with the idea of having a quidditch team some students don t agree what s the point it is just people running around with broomsticks between their legs said face just when you feel like giving up you hear the roaring shouts from the cheer block chanting your name somewhere deep down inside you find the energy to keep going and fight till the finish the cheer block gives athletes motivation to do better and that is why school spirit is important principal rick manns said school spirit is having pride in ones school pride can be a lot of things such as keeping the building nice participating in school activities and supporting the schools extra curriculum activities by the definition that manns said school spirit should also include not being embarrassed to support a losing team losing a game is always hard on the athlete and it is not as fun to play but with the help of a cheer block things can be turned around the cheer block helps the athlete remember who they are playing for and even if they lose their school is still supporting them the cheer block helps you see what you are playing for and who you are giving spirit to said 12 sports maddie mollie collins copy editors 10.21.11 woolbright s double insights trouble coning stupid but satisfactory someone recently told me that 5 a.m workouts might be the most ridiculous thing i have ever done luke woolbright sport columnist and that is in comparison with a very extensive list of stupid things at first glance putting 200-400 pounds on a bar and playing with it at 5 in the morning does sound ridiculous however after four months i must say these workouts are the most productive thing i have done in my athletic career the workouts i do are highly detailed and take about an hour and 15 minutes i do these four days a week for four months so i have done this roughly 70 times it is common that friends or athletes who know i do it tell me they will meet me there with full intentions to do so however i ve done less than 10 workouts with a partner it forces you make a decision you are either going to tell yourself they did not have the will to show up so i ll take it easy or i am here because i want it more than everyone else and since i want it more i have to go harder success in sports is about being engaged 5 a.m workouts are engagement the first time you go to a party play call of duty or watch a game at a friend s house and stay up until two or three in the morning before a 5 a.m workout you do not do it again you gain discipline by necessity and beyond this every party you skip every date you do not go on and every night you turn everything off and go to bed at 10 you want success more when you want success more you become more engaged you watch more film you study and mimic movements of great throwers you know the names of the top ten guys in the state and what they like to eat for breakfast and you hate them for thinking they are better than you engagement is the key to success a constant want and desire to fulfill a goal keep a promise or make a dream a reality you fall in love with the pursuit it is not hard to get lulled into a routine to go throughout practices without thinking about them to stop studying your sport to forget about your competition in the off-season and to lackadaisically complete workouts it is what your friends probably do it is what a lot of your competition will do and it is the natural trend the idea of 5 a.m workouts was simply about getting me engaged and understanding what it takes this insight is not about 5 a.m workouts while i recommend them it is about asking yourself how much you want it and how engaged you are some people follow fashion trends others technology trends but a new trend is emerging and it s distinct from all the rest publicly humiliating yourself for the sake of a picture planking started this trend and now coning is picking up some recognition it is pointless and stupid but if it s done right hilarious the art of coning consists of picking up a cone upside-down to begin coning you must go to a restaurant that offers ice cream cones on its menu a drive-thru is best so you can get away faster after you embarrass yourself once you order your cone have someone ready in the passenger seat to take a picture of you pay for your cone and pull up to the second window with a blank expression making sure not to clue anyone in on what you re about to do when the cone is handed to you grab it firmly by the ice-cream half and flip it over cone up look the
