to report on his recent trip to poland to assist polish churches across the country 13th november living the incarnation eople often say that when they die they want to be remembered for something but so often despite their achievements a life becomes nothing more than a sentence in a news story or a number in our minds this week a man lost his life at londonderry but it will disappear from the headlines and hence our thoughts quicker than it arrived hundreds of people die in car accidents each year and many of them we hear nothing about and then there s those who die at war for many of us when we hear that one of our soldiers has been killed in action we stop reflect and then move on as the numbers of dead rise each incident in which we lose a soldier becomes sadly less significant to the daily news cycle but then something happens that changes your thought process th is week the death of lance corporal luke gavin brought the reality of war to our doorstep luke was a local boy a bloke from st clair to be more exact his image adorns our front page this week in tribute to his bravery his fi ne career in the army and to his memory his death is no more or less significant than the 31 other australian soldiers who have lost their lives in this war but he s one of our own he grew up just down the road from all of us he leaves behind a young family and exits this world before his 30th birthday it just doesn t make sense and so comes the inevitable question what are we actually doing there and should we bring the troops home let s remember that the primary driver behind the invasion of afghanistan was the in the case of luke gavin we re losing soldiers at the hands of the very people we re trying to help i dare say that most of us go through our days without thinking about the war in afghanistan unless of course it is brought into our minds via losing soldiers or significant moments but when you actually sit back and think about the situation we must seriously question why we are still there we ve been there 10 years we got osama bin laden we re losing soldiers we re losing good aussie blokes and in the case of luke gavin we re losing soldiers at the hands of the very people who we re trying to help reports suggest that the coward who gunned down luke gavin bryce duff y and ashley birt last weekend was a veteran afghan national army soldier a few months earlier luke had spoken about how glad he was to give his afghan comrades a helping hand australia s involvement in the war in afghanistan was necessary most would agree but our continued involvement in the war is what is seriously debatable at the current time it is true that our soldiers accept the risk it is true that achieving the greater good is the ultimate aim but at some point enough is enough support for war and involvement in war often decreases as casualties rise how many more lives do we need to lose in afghanistan before public opinion reaches such a point that our politicians have no other choice but to seriously consider withdrawing when incidents like the one that killed luke gavin can happen 10 years after we fi rst arrived you have to question how a positive conclusion could ever be reached the time has come to bring them home for julia gillard there s no political points to be won or lost some will applaud her for taking such a stance others will say she s pulling out when the job isn t done but i have a feeling that in the world of public opinion and in the suburbs of sydney where the votes lie the people sitting down to dinner and the 6pm news every night want the troops brought home it would take a very brave prime minister to make such a call at the moment not even tony abbott supports immediate withdrawal i m no expert in the world of war and in fact i probably made the wrong choice to tune out during high school history lessons but i do know about the emotions of people and about the value of life the number 32 will almost certainly grow www.westernweekender.com.au local news tragic sight lance corporal luke gavin s fellow soldiers say their final goodbyes in afghanistan this week t he st marys rsl sub-branch has pledged to do everything it can to support the wife children and family left behind after lance corporal luke gavin was gunned down whilst serving in afghanistan president of the sub-branch gary fizzell said it was upsetting to know the lance corporal was from st clair it s a shame he came from our area mr fizzell told the weekender his poor wife and three children will understandably be very upset right now we will give them time to grieve in private and then we will follow up with the family to see if there is any support we can give lance corporal gavin was one of three soldiers killed in afghanistan last week and the tragic incident has fuelled debate about whether our soldiers should continue to serve in the country 10 years after the operation commenced everybody is quite disgusted with the way it happened they are over there to help and this is what happens mr fizzell said but the general opinion from my members is that the boys over there are doing a worthwhile job maybe we should look at the war in the same perspective as the diggers on the ground in afghanistan we wouldn t be there if it wasn t important prime minister julia gillard said this week that the incident would not change the mission in afghanistan attacks like this are designed to corrode trust that s the purpose these attacks it s an attempt by our enemy to strike at the core of our training and mentoring mission in afghanistan she said our partners in the afghan national army are shocked and horrified by what has occurred we know the act of this afghanistan member was not in the interests of the people of afghanistan mr fizzell said it was easy to lose sight of a mission s purpose when soldiers are killed it s very upsetting when they are sent back home in a coffi n and sometimes i think that we shouldn t be there he said members of the sub-branch have all been through it and we can sympathise with how upsetting it is the western weekender friday november 4 2011 1027wwd2960 9

www.westernweekender.com.au local news mayor s news greg davies some 200 kilos of clothing donated by council staff was collected for the salvos in penrith this week it proves that a good cause is a great motivation local students are busy keeping penrith city beautiful through the waste watchers education initiative sitting in on the program on monday i met council s waste officers of the future time to tap into their enthusiasm for looking after our environment a mark of a mature society is its inclusiveness after recently celebrating the successes of penrith city s inclusion plan it s encouraging to see businesses get on board too by making their shops more accessible to parents with prams and people in wheelchairs given figures that show nearly 20 per cent of our people have some form of disability this clearly makes good business sense a highlight of last week was a visit by a korean delegation of 12 business and political leaders keen to collaborate and forge business opportunities sw police commissioner andrew scipione has spoken out against domestic violence and says victims must step forward and report incidents in an exclusive one-on-one interview with the weekender mr scipione condemned domestic violence as one of the most hideous crimes police officers have to deal with assaults overall are falling of course if you were to drill into the assaults there s domestic violence and non-domestic violence [and the one area where we have seen an increase is domestic violence while nondomestic violence is falling he said but here s the dilemma we suspect the vast majority of domestic violence is not reported so what i am doing is encouraging people to make a report the commissioner said that recent increases in the number of reported domestic violence cases suggests police are getting their message through and more victims are speaking up for themselves victims are prepared to come and talk to us and are n confident we can do something about it and that is a good thing as we have to continue to do all we can to drive domestic violence out it is unacceptable it s one of the most hideous crimes we have to deal with and certainly something we pay particular attention to the commissioner is positive about the overall reduction of crime in penrith and st marys with many key indicators showing a long-term decline in incidents such as break and enters and motor vehicle thefts if you were to look at crime rates today as opposed to what they were 10 or 15 years ago in western sydney you would see break and enters are through the floor the number of break and enters significantly reduced all falling he said is that good enough one car stolen one house broken into one victim of crime is always going to be one too many so we should never be satisfied or happy about where we are the solution has in part been improvements to the nsw police force s customer service a personal goal that mr scipione set forth when he was named commissioner in 2007 we want to ensure the nsw police commissioner andrew scipione in penrith last friday community that we do not own you you own us he said successful campaigns such as mystery shoppers to test police services community awareness policing programmes and social media are the new tools of successf u l moder n day policing read the full story online at www.westernweekender.com
