country ride safety precautions for operating all terrain vehicles n all regions of the country canadians are taking to all terrain vehicles atvs like never before driving atvs has become a favourite pastime for many adventure lovers unfortunately with the increased recreational use of atvs related injuries have also been on the rise between 2002 and 2008 there were 100 atvrelated deaths in the province of alberta alone excessive speed inexperience and alcohol were common factors contributing to these casualties story by greg hanson i in light of these and other atv-related deaths and injuries across canada john baird in his former role as canada s minister of transport encouraged all atv users to take steps to protect themselves and try to prevent incidents from happening in the first place to that end here are ten recommendations that will enhance your own safety and the safety of those you love 2 3 4 5 takeacoursefroma qualifiedatvinstructor this is a requirement for young drivers in some provinces even if it is not required where you live it is still a good idea for children and adults alike weartheproper protectiveequipment always wear a quality helmet that exceeds safety requirements and is in good condition regularly inspect your helmet for any dents or cracks if you find any replace it fibreglass helmets are standard and less expensive but kevlar is stronger and offers better protection your helmet should fit snugly but comfortably and include full face protection your protective gear should also include gloves a longsleeved shirt or jacket pants not shorts and boots childrenunder16should onlyoperateanatvwhile undersupervision 1 8 knowthelaws inyourarea drive your atv only where it is legal age restrictions as well as atv licensing and registrations vary from province to province so check to see what the laws are where you live a link to the relevant website for each province can be found on the transport canada website at tc.gc.ca/eng/roadsafety/resources-links-index-47.htm#caprov beyond provincial laws pay attention to local bylaws and be respectful of private property even if they are legally permitted to drive they may lack the experience and judgment to operate the atv safely packanemergency kitforyouratv include such items as first aid supplies a blanket sunscreen water a whistle a flashlight flares waterproof matches a knife a compass and a small quantity of nonperishable food or nutrition bars www.countrypridemag.com

6 7 8 9 tellsomeonewhere youaregoingandwhen youwillbeback in the event that you become lost or are injured this information may become essential to your safe rescue plus it will provide peace of mind for those at home crossroads&highways quicklybutsafely when you come to a road or highway stop the atv and look both ways for oncoming traffic when there is a break in traffic go directly across do not cross at an angle or spend more time than necessary to get to the other side adjustyourdriving forthesituation your atv will handle differently on a paved road than on a dirt trail or other terrain your control of the atv will also be affected by rain or snow if you are carrying a passenger or other items remember that the additional weight will affect the centre of balance and how the atv handles specifically it will change how the atv accelerates brakes and corners most atvs are not designed for passengers you should only carry a passenger if you have an atv that is built for it drivewithinyourlimitations driving an atv can be an exciting and enjoyable pastime there is no reason for you to sacrifice your safety in the process by exercising sound judgment and taking these precautions you can fully enjoy the use of your atv while maintaining a high level of safety t www.countrypridemag.com 9 atvs are powerful vehicles that should be driven responsibly responsible drivers recognize what they can and cannot do and then operate accordingly also be mindful of the limitations of the atv itself about half of atv-related fatalities are the result of the atv rolling or flipping respecting your limitations will help minimize this risk while you should enjoy driving your atv resist the urge to show off keep your speed manageable and stick to safe terrain when traveling in an unfamiliar area take precautions by reducing your speed to watch for fences especially barbed wire fallen trees and other unexpected hazards 10 neverdrivewhile intoxicatedorunder theinfluenceofdrugs this may seem obvious but far too many injuries and fatalities result from drivers who neglect this important safety standard.
