from mrs ryan 4th grade news calling all pumpkins to 4th grade for our annual pumpkin day this year was the best year yet sixteen pumpkins were donated by the 4th grade families for us to use on this special learning day students were put into 7 groups and moved around the classroom visiting 7 learning stations the students were asked to weigh pumpkins find the circumference weigh gourds on a balance scale triple the recipe for pumpkin muffins while eating pumpkin muffins made by a class mom ,and finally carving a jack o lantern and reading about pumpkin contest winners it was a memorable learning experience for all proving what teachers always say learning can be fun from mrs maffia and mrs andrews second grade news this year there are so many twos in the second grade we even have two teachers we think that two heads are better than one students are busy learning about native americans as new york city s first inhabitants we are also becoming better readers and writers by practicing in our guided reading groups and responding to literature we will begin tracking our 25 books starting with the november 1st homework reading response have a safe and happy halloween mrs lapierre mrs smith prekindergarten news october has been a busy month for pre-k our circle time activities are constantly expanding as the children develop skills in name recognition rhyming letters counting and more the children have also been working as classroom helpers doing important jobs that benefit the whole group we are all beginning to feel a sense of community responsibility and pride in their accomplishments the children participate in daily routine jobs that involve counting questioning problem solving sharing information and cooperation both classes have done a wonderful job sharing responsibilities and working together as a group our favorite books this month are go away big green monster by ed emberly and the little old lady who was not afraid of anything by linda d williams the children enjoyed sequencing and acting out the details in these two interactive tales this week we will be celebrating halloween pre-k is very excited about the upcoming costume parade and decorating pre-k wishes everyone a sweet trick-or-treat experience administration s message we are involved in so many wonderful projects and programs at ps/ms 47 this year the program achieve 3000 continues in grades four through eight it is a differentiated reading program that is conducted online computer club chess club and chorus have continued this year as well the 100th precinct community council sponsors the chess club our teacher volunteer mrs abrams facilitates computer club may we also add that ms penny is volunteering her time again this year we cannot thank these teachers enough for their dedication to the students of ps/ms 47 the annual breast cancer walk took place on october 21st thank you to mrs stone and mrs colleran for coordinating this event the eighth grade participates in the walk as our school s representatives donations are sent to the american cancer society thank you for the generous donations penny harvest is underway we encourage our students to bring in pennies and any loose change eventually the pennies will be counted and proceeds are used for charitable organizations the summer reading challenge assembly was held on november 5th congratulations to the 58 students who completed this endeavor we believe this is our highest response rate yet the school spelling bee will be held on friday november 4th at 1pm students from grades 5 through 8 will be participating the winner will advance to the scripps national spelling bee student council will be handling the box tops for education program in addition to sending in the box top coupons please think of us when you are doing your online shopping if you shop through box tops marketplace we can obtain additional money for our school we are also collecting labels for education it all adds up on monday october 31st we will hold our halloween/harvest celebration students are allowed to wear costumes to school and we will have a parade at 8:30am in the inner school yard parents are welcome the parents association will hold their pumpkin decorating event for all students it promises to be a lively day parent teacher conferences will take place on tuesday november 15th report cards will be distributed we are utilizing global connect again this year to keep parents abreast of school news and events please let us know if you are not getting the messages in addition notices go home with your children for certain information many of the notices only go to the youngest in the family in an effort to reduce waste and keep you from looking at two or three of the same items from your children s folders thank you for all your consideration and cooperation sincerely janet donohue ann moynagh
