term newsletter for parents ter mf 201 our 1 kowhai october 2011 issue no seventeen apple.com/iwork welcome to term four 2011 dear parents and caregivers welcome back to a new and exciting last term i hope you enjoyed a well-deserved break spent some quality time with one another and you are looking forward to the warmer weather as much as i am this term we welcome eryn roxburgh from the university of canterbury who will be in kowhai for the first four weeks of this term rugby world cup budgets the last term of the year has arrived welcome back to school the warmer weather means the return of our school hat being sun smart means that we take every precaution in keeping safe in the sun and it is imperative that your child brings their school uniform issue hat to school every day please do not wear caps these do not protect your child s ears or neck working hard soccer skills with the beginning of a new term it is a good idea to check whether your child needs any additional stationery many of the children in kowhai were running low on glue sticks pencils and books at the end of last term and they will need to be replaced as soon as possible these are available from the school office before and after school please ensure that payment is made at the time of purchase some highlights from our term three antics lsutherland@stpatkai.school.nz kowhai www.stpatkai.ultranet.school.nz

term four 2011 page 2 the learning extension for the term is similar to last term each night reading maths and spelling will be sent home this will still be monitored closely so don t forget to keep signing those reading logs if your child does not have one you can log any reading at home into their spelling notebooks the learning extension can still be completed online if you do not have internet access at home there are always laptops for your child to use before school and the traditional learning extension sheets will still be available your child has three weeks to complete the required activities to earn their trinity quest for the year the last day to have the required tasks signed off by me is the 18th of november many children in kowhai have almost if not already completed their trinity quest challenges and i am impressed with the learning that has taken place we have had some sterling presentations from our class members this year we have taken photos of most of these and they are available to view on our class ultranet page i can t wait to see what exciting things people present this term our topic for the term begins with a health focus specifically a cycle safety unit we will have education officers from the police force coming out to school on friday in week one your child may need to bring their bikes to school to practise the all important road safety skills they will learn i will put a message on ultranet with any further details you may need to know we will then take a turn to an arts focus we will be busy preparing for the school production we have songs to sings lines to learn props to create and costumes to design we will be busy busy if you have any spare newspaper at home a donation of this to our class would be greatly appreciated we will use this to create papiermâché props the production will take place over two shows on the 29th and 30th of november from 7.00-8.00pm at the kaiapoi high school auditorium further details will emerge in the coming weeks we will continue to have p.e on a friday afternoon please remind your child to pack their p.e gear each week our focus this term will be on volleyball and swimming each friday afternoon for four sessions a team from mainpower will come out to school to work on volleyball skills with the class mainpower are also sponsoring every child in years 3-5 to participate in ten swimming lessons the dates for our swimming lessons are as follows the 1st and 2nd of december each day from the 5th 9th of december 12th 13th and 14th of december your child will need to bring their togs and towel to school on these days our library day is friday and any early returned books can still be placed in a green box in the classroom library our class mass is on wednesday of week five this term at 9.00am sharp please remember that as mass starts first thing in the morning your child will be asked to arrive early that day to ensure we are all on time our family mass for the term is on the 27th of november at 9.00am your child/children are obligated to attend if there is a family emergency and you are unable to make this please remember to send a note to school to explain any absence if there are any queries regarding your son or daughter do not hesitate to contact me to arrange a time which is convenient for us both to sit and discuss your concerns kind regards lyneen sutherland a at m wh ter usy oooo b h wa lsutherland@stpatkai.school.nz kowhai www.stpatkai.ultranet.school.nz
