Jennifer Gaggion No matter how comfy your couch is, how big the family room TV screen is, or how fancy your dining room set is, your kitchen is still the heart of your home. It’s where you start your day with breakfast and end it with dinner (or in my case a late-night snack). Not to mention, it’s where you go for pit stops throughout the day, and of course, spend time cleaning up after each meal. And when you have guests over, the kitchen is usually where everyone ends up gathering. So, given all of the time that you and your guests end up spending in your kitchen, it should not only be a practical and functional space, but a welcoming and peaceful environment as well. 10 OLM www.originallivingmagazine.com Summer 2018

If you’re feeling like your kitchen is in need of a little TLC, then here are 5 tips and tricks to help you out. Whether you are hiring a professional, or thinking more along the lines of a DIY project, these tips are 1.great for taking your kitchen to the next level. Pick the right color scheme. The palette that paints your kitchen should be one that looks fresh, clean, and calming. It’s a good idea to stick with softer tones. Something too bright, like a fire engine red or a canary yellow, can be okay as a moderately used accent color, but can be hard on the eyes, or too distracting when used as a dominant color. One classic example of a clean and calming color scheme, is whites and light grays with ocean blues. 2.Choose appropriate countertops. If you have a lot of windows and an abundance of natural light flowing through your kitchen, then you have an environment that could compliment dark counter tops. That being said, whether you’re going for a rustic, beachy, or elegant vibe, lighter counter tops always look great. Its one of the reasons why stones like Carrera marble are such a sought-after countertop material, because its natural, beautiful, crisp, and light. Can’t afford Carrera marble? You’re not alone. Given the beautiful effects that can be done with concrete these days, concrete is a wonderful alternative to natural cut stone for your countertops. If you’re looking for an easier, shorter-term solution for updating your counters, there are also some great-quality and easyto-use countertop paint products and kits on the market. 3.Go for glass fronts on some of your upper cabinets. You’d be surprised at the way a few glass-fronted upper cabinets can accent your kitchen and really add another level of depth to the space. An added bonus: having exposed storage space gives you a chance to show off your beautiful glassware and plates, and 4.even provides incentive to stay organized! Please. Choose. Good. Lighting. There’s nothing worse than having bad lighting ruin an otherwise well-designed space. Especially in a kitchen, it’s essential to have good work lighting. Recessed lighting aimed at counters, and undermounted lighting under the upper cabinets are perfect for lighting your work and prep areas. In addition to task lighting, having some sort of pendant or chandelier over an island, kitchen sink, or eat-in kitchen areas, (or lighting in your glass-fronted cabinets) are all wonderful as accents and for creating a nice ambiance in the space. As far as what light bulbs to use, a highly beneficial tip is to take swatches of your kitchen materials and paint colors to your local lighting specialist or a light fixture showroom and see how those swatches look under different types of light bulbs. The type of light bulb you use will have an effect on how the colors in your kitchen look, so its important to choose the right one 5.for your taste. Add a little greenery. There are a few benefits to having greenery in your kitchen. It’s been proven that having indoor plants is a fantastic way to improve air quality. In addition to that, you can decide to have fresh herbs growing in your kitchen, which will smell amazing, save you money on some ingredients, and of course taste divine in your cooking! It can also be as easy as keeping a vase of fresh flowers on display. Whatever you choose, having fresh plants in your kitchen is a sure way to add freshness and liveliness to the space. If keeping plants isn’t your forte, something as simple as displaying your fresh produce, as in a bowl of fresh fruit on the island, or a tiered basket of fruits and store-bought herbs hanging over the sink, can also help to achieve this ambiance. Kitchens are not just a place where we cook, but also a place to gather, and make happy memories. We hope these 5 tips help you create a space that you feel wonderful in and want to show off. Happy remodeling! Summer 2018 www.originallivingmagazine.com OLM 11
