Bolivar Road School “The Address for Success” June 2018 Principal’s Monthly Message As someone who has been "going to school” for most of her life, June has always been a magical time, marking the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation. For children, there lies ahead an endless summer >illed with possibilities. It is up to us, as parents, to provide them with some structure and activities that will allow them to continue learning even though they are no longer in school. Often simple day-to-day activities can keep your child in the learning loop. One suggestion is to make sure there are lots of easy books available for them to read for fun. Even though they may be easy for your child, they will provide reinforcement of strategies learned in school (and potentially forgotten over the summer). Reading easy books also allows for the reinforcement of sight words, greater familiarity with book language and the development of >luent and phrased oral reading. Writing postcards and letters to relatives and friends, notes to mom or dad, and helping with shopping lists are relatively painless ways of engaging children in writing activities. Encouraging your child to keep a summer journal is another way to engage him or her in meaningful writing. As for math, telling time and counting money are math concepts that can be challenging. Endless real life opportunities present themselves for practice. Also, gathering and adding coupon values, keeping track of the shopping list, or tallying miles on a trip are ways your child can perform math tasks that are real and fun. June marks the end of my time at Bolivar and I will admit that in the short time I have been here I have become attached to this school, these children, and the staff. But the greater departure is that of our fourth-grade students. They will be heading off on a new adventure in September and leaving Bolivar behind. They are a great group of students with amazing potential and I wish them much success at CMS. My best wishes to you all. Thank you, and I hope you and your family have a wonderful summer. ~ Jan Ahlsen CHANGES TO NYS HEALTH EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS EFFECTIVE JULY 2018 Starting July 2018, mandates in Education Law with regards to physical exams will change. Health examinations will be required for each student in kindergarten, first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, and eleventh grade, all students who are entering the school district for the first time, students receiving certain special education services, and all students involved in interscholastic athletics. Health examinations may be either performed at school by the School Medical Director or performed by the student’s primary medical provider. They must be dated no more than twelve months prior to the start of the school year in which they are required or the date of entrance to the school for new entrants. Bolivar B.E.A.R.S. We need a quorum to vote, so please come! Email us at BolivarPTA@gmail.com if you are interested in joining our team. On June 18 the 4th graders from Bolivar and Bridgeport visit Green Lakes. PTA is ordering their “Class of 2026” shirts and will assist with hosting the 4th grade families at school after the trip. Is your child missing a coat, sweatshirt, or pair of gloves? We have many clothing items on our “lost and found” cart that have not been claimed. There are just a few more weeks left of school to reclaim your belongings.
