Recycled – Made with a significant proportion of recycled materials. Enviromentally-friendly – Made from materials that are sustainable and particularly environmentally friendly. Artisan – Celebrating the best of traditional craftsmanship. These articles illustrate exquisite skill and incredible attention to detail. Mass production and the forces of globalisation threaten artisan producers and their communities, who often struggle to adapt to the competition. UNESCO recognises the importance of the preservation of traditional skills and knowledge and the benefits that are conferred when these skills are passed on, particularly within the same community. By purchasing items that celebrate traditional craftsmanship, Namaste is contributing to the preservation of traditional skills and indigenous cultural heritage and we hope and believe that we are contributing positively to this effort. Food safe symbol - The material used in this product is safe for food contact. GoodWeave – All of our rugs come from either GoodWeave licensed suppliers or from suppliers who are working towards GoodWeave accreditation. We are proud to ® support this pioneering charity that seeks to end child labour in rug weaving and to help educate and develop rug weaving communities. For more information please see page 315 or visit www.goodweave.org. • NAM EPAL ORT • CHIL ASTE SUPP D RESCUE N Child Rescue Nepal - Namaste has been supporting Child Rescue Nepal for almost 20 years. Child Rescue Nepal frees children from slavery. There are 5.5 million children in the world today who are trapped in slavery or similar practices. We contribute a percentage of all purchases we make from Nepal to Child Rescue Nepal. To find out more about the charity please see page 442 or visit www.childrescuenepal.org Fair Trade Forum India - Fair Trade ForumIndia (FTF-I) is the National Network for Fair Trade in India. Fair Trade Group Nepal - Fair Trade Group (FTG) Nepal is a consortium of fair trading organisations in Nepal. Bamboo with Eggshell spun bamboo decorated with hand painted eggshell See page 35 Recycling & Respecting the Environment Recycled and environmentally friendly products make up a large proportion of the ranges we have to offer at Namaste. Wherever possible we try to ensure that our suppliers can source the raw materials they use from recycled sources, and we are proud to say that many of our suppliers are now specialising in green products. We make sure to discuss with our suppliers their environmental policies and their use of recycled materials, while encouraging them to use both recycled and environmentally friendly packaging materials. We are also trying to do our bit for the environment by minimising our use of packaging materials and by re-using everything we can. 100% handloom recycled cotton Mandira cushion cover See page 362 100% PET yarn from recycled plastic bottles See page 339 Our best-selling ranges of Indian windchimes, made from recycled iron See page 241 Handloom kilim with recycled sari thread See page 393 6 HOME & GIFTS Handmade paper gift bags made from recycled cotton waste See page 257

HANDMADE IN INDIA Recycled Aluminium Wherever possible we choose to reuse and recycle. Recycled aluminium saves up to 90% carbon emissions compared to the production of new aluminium from bauxite - it also reduces landfill waste! The aluminium is cast and then highly polished to give it a lovely smooth finish. The colour is applied and allowed to dry before being hand finished with clear enamel, which is then given a final polish. All items are food safe. Our supplier in Northern India was established in 1992 and has grown to be one of the larger enterprises that Namaste trades with. Two brothers manage a family business with a total combined workforce of over 150, many of whom are skilled artisans. Over 100 of these employees are permanent workers with job security. We hope that by placing regular orders and building our business together, Namaste is contributing to providing much needed employment and income for the local community. We buy direct from the manufacturers, with no middlemen or exporters involved in the buying chain. This enables us to build a relationship together in a spirit of partnership. All Namaste production is carried out ‘in-house’ and we have inspected the workshops and can report that production areas are clean, well lit and ventilated and fire exits and first aid facilities are well signposted. All Health and Safety, First Aid and Fire regulations are in place and adhered to. Paid breaks are provided during the working day and 18 is the minimum age for employment. The business makes regular contributions to schools where children from poor families can study. Recycled materials are used in packaging and waste products are disposed of carefully with concern for the local environment. The artisans and other workers involved in Namaste production earn a fair wage which is at least equal to or above prevailing local rates. Wages are in excess of minimum wages as set down by the state and we are confident that they allow a reasonable standard of living. Men and women earn the same pay for the same job; sick pay is provided plus paid holidays and time off for festivals – an important part of life in India! One of the advantages of working with larger scale producers is that the workers often benefit from a more organised and better place to work. HOME & GIFTS 13
