on march 23 and 24 the seventh annual battle of the books competition was held and was once again a great success over ninety-five fourth and fifth graders initially signed up for this reading enrichment program sponsored by the pta battle readers were required to read thirty books of different reading levels and genres they had to memorize the title and author and familiarize themselves with details from each book in order to answer questions on competition day parsley had its highest participation ever with 80 readers meeting their reading goals and eligible to compete the readers started preparing back in september and dedicated themselves to reading twenty of the thirty books on the reading list by january they met twice monthly during the monday morning marvels practice sessions and then again for our afternoon practice sessions during these sessions readers played fun games and had lively discussions on all the books on competition day the battle participants showed off their skills and answered over 100 questions relating to the books they read the fifth grade competition resulted in a 3-way tie a first at parsley after a sudden death round one team emerged the winner but all the competitors are winners in our eyes the fourth grade competition was equally exciting with our competitors keeping their cool in front of a large audience while answering some pretty tough questions way to go fourth graders rd th music notes from ms baker and p.e from mrs deaton during the weeks of april 5th and april 12th music and p.e are combining and teaching dance students are dancing twice a week during their regularly scheduled music and p.e classes please make sure your son/daughter wears sneakers on these days notes from the nurse spring into spring spring has sprung the flowers are starting to bloom the temperatures are warmer and we have an extra hour of daylight at the end of the day what better time to get active moving your body by running jumping walking and playing gives you energy and keeps your muscles and bones strong it also can help prevent chronic health problems and make you feel good about yourself according to the surgeon general more than 50 of adults are not physically active on a regular basis and about 25 are not active at all and children tend to follow by example so be a role model here are some suggestions provide regular opportunities for the whole family to participate in physical activity together try going for a family bike ride or walk participate as a family in a charity fun run or walk take family vacations that include hiking or other physical activity or practice sports with your kids limit daily screen time i.e computer tv or videos to no more than 2 hours set a good example and limit your screen time as well try maximizing time in front of tv by dancing to the music or running in place or putting in an exercise video make it a goal to move 60 minutes each day if you are unable to do this all at once try moving for 10 minutes at a time several times during the day this can include inside chores walking the dog kicking the soccer ball or playing tag with a friend so spring into spring and get moving as a family you ll be glad you did happy spring maria turnley rn visual art camp at parsley thank you to the parsley pta for spononce again mrs sload will be teaching visual art camp at parsley using a wide varisoring this wonderful program another ety of art techniques and supplies fun to be had by all thanks to the teachers and staff for their continued support and to the parents and grades rising 1st -5th grade families for encouraging their battle dates week 1 june 14-17 reader to join the program and work their week 2 june 21-24 hardest to succeed readers are leaders times 8:00 am 10:00 am grades 1-2 10:30 am 12:30 pm grades 3-5 pta web sites cost $40.00 per week per child location parsley art room north carolina pta www ncpta.org art camp will be monday through thursday not monday through friday as in the past this is due to the fact that all school buildings in new hanover county will be closed on fridays during the summer to compresident deb church dchurch2@bellsouth.net pensate for the loss of friday a half hour has been added to each vp fund raising melissa pollock mapollock@bellsouth.net vp membership sandi gessner sandig@ec.rr.com day all supplies are provided if you need a form please pick vp special events garnett willard garnettw@ec.rr.com one up in the office or the art room space is limited so please treasurer christy jewell wojewell@aol.com register soon to ensure your child a spot any questions please recording secretary joelle ando tando@bellsouth.net feel free to call suzanne sload 790-2355 ext 105 corresponding secretary barb caropolo caropolo@ec.rr.com pta council rep tracey schmidt traceyvision@hotmail.com national pta for student parent topics www.pta.org sign up for the nhcs e-news update www.nhcs.net.
