MTV will be associated with the Blackpool Illuminations Switch-On concert for the third successive year. The free show will be played out on Friday 31 August on the Tower Festival Headland, one of the most iconic outdoor music venues in the UK. Details of the acts and Switch-On personality will be released in the coming weeks. Last year almost 20,000 people who enjoyed Laser beams and pyrotechnics that lit up Blackpool Promenade as the resort celebrated the start of the 2017 Blackpool Illuminations season with an out-of-this-world Switch-On event. After a dazzling performance leading up to the Switch-On moment by Diversity, the dance group’s creative director Ashley Banjo sent out a distress signal to help power up Blackpool’s famous Illuminations in front of a huge audience on the Tower Festival Headland. It was then that Gabriel Lorca (actor Jason Isaacs), the captain of the brand new Star Trek: Discovery TV series, was beamed on to a giant screen to come to the rescue, enabling Diversity to trigger an explosion of lights, fireworks and confetti, and kick-start 66 nights of Illuminations on Blackpool seafront. This first “intergalactic” Switch-On was part of a unique collaboration with Netflix and CBS, to celebrate the much-anticipated release of the next chapter in the iconic Star Trek franchise later this month. The crowd was wowed by live performances from Conor Maynard, Sigala, R3wire & Varski, and the MTV Base Garage Anthems show. It was the second year running that Diversity had played a starring role in the event, which last year was hosted by MTV’s Becca Dudley. Once the Switch-On ceremony was over, Example and DJ Wire headlined an hour-long party under the Lights. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “We are thrilled that MTV is again associated with the 2018 Switch-On event. “Last year’s event was a huge success, drawing in crowds from all across the country. We can’t wait to see what is in store for 2018!” Mark Swift, SVP, Commercial & International Ad Sales, MTV, commented: “We have a very positive, long-standing relationship with VisitBlackpool and we are delighted to be returning to Blackpool to support the Illuminations Switch-On, in addition to staging Nickelodeon Slimefest in October” The Friday night celebration will once again start with a “Blackpool Introduces” showcase featuring the best of local talent. That will be followed by the main show, the Switch-On itself, and then an hour-long party under the lights. As last year, the Switch-On event will be free, with people invited to apply for the 20,000 wristbands that will guarantee entry to the Tower Festival Headland arena. Allocation is restricted to four wristbands per household. The ballot closes at midday on Tuesday 24 July. Marine Splash provides youngsters with the opportunity to splash through fountains, water jets and water tunnels, with a paddling area also included. Marine Splash has opened for the summer period and will be open every weekend thereafter. During the school holidays until September, Marine Splash will be open 7 days a week. All opening times will be weather permitting. Be sure to visit the Splash café serving hot and cold food and drinks, ice cream and shakes. Marine Splash opening times have been extended this year and it will now operate between 10am and 4pm on weekends. During the school holidays, Marine Splash will be open between 10am and 7pm Monday to Friday. Entry to Marine Splash is £2 for those aged 4-16 and free to those 3 and under. During school holidays (Monday – Friday), YMCA Fleetwood will be operating a fun activity programme at YMCA Fleetwood that will include a number of indoor pool junior activities such as inflatable fun swims, waterwalkerz, peddlerz, surf boards, Mermaid Sessions plus much more! Prices start at £3 for YMCA members and FY7 residents (proof required. £5 for all others). Prices include junior activities occurring at the time of entry.Visit our website at ymcayactive.org for details of school holiday activities and times. Children will be given a wristband which they must wear when in the centre. The wristband will not be valid outside of the published public session times In addition, YMCA Fleetwood Health and Fitness Centre have secured a local community grant to provide free swimming for local Fleetwood children with an FY7 postcode throughout the school holidays. Free swimming throughout the school holidays is available for children aged 16 and under.All children wishing to take part in the free sessions must complete a registration form before participating. Forms are available from YMCA Fleetwood and must be signed by a parent or guardian aged 18 or over with proof of residency at an FY7 postcode e.g. recent utility bill or driving licence.Any children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a paying parent or guardian aged 18 or over. All children registering for free swimming from the FY7 postcode areas will be given a membership card which they must bring every time they wish to enter the facilities. Here, we look at the pros and cons of real turf and artificial grass. Us Brits love grass lawns.They are a defining feature of our suburbs and are in most people’s gardens.Yet they are expensive and require regular upkeep.At a bare minimum, you have to mow them regularly, strim the edges and dig out the weeds. If you have lovely-looking grass on your lawn, chances are it will stay like that. But not all gardens are as fortunate. For some, the lawn can be most the high maintenance thing in their garden. So, what do you do if your lawn is looking worse for wear? Here we look at the pros and cons of real turf and artificial grass. REAL GRASS A newly turfed lawn can transform a tired garden into an attractive outdoor space.The process of laying the turves (rolls of turf) is not difficult and you can start using the lawn within a few days. Most of work is in the soil preparation. It involves stripping the old lawn and a lot of weeding, digging, levelling and raking. The turves ideally need to be laid within 24 hours of delivery, so you need to work relatively quickly.After it has been laid, it needs to be watered frequently until it has rooted into the underlying soil. If you want to cultivate a lawn that is long-lasting, make sure you buy the right variety of turf. Many products are described as multipurpose but they may not be suitable for your garden. One square metre of multipurpose lawn turf starts from £2 to £3.You may also have to buy top soil if your existing soil is poor.A 750 litre bag of top soil will cover 15 to 20 square metres to a depth of 55 mm. It costs around £120. ARTIFICIAL GRASS More people are opting for synthetic grass in their gardens because they require minimal upkeep.Artificial grass doesn’t need to be mowed and you get a green lawn all year round. It can’t be dug up, which is why it is particularly popular with families who have young children and dogs. Previously, synthetic lawn turf looked very similar to the mats you used to get on greengrocers’ displays. Now, you can get products that are a convincing alternative to real turf.The fibres are cut at different lengths and are in a range of greens and browns, which gives the grass a natural look and feel. If the lawn is laid and looked after properly, it can last approximately 7 to 10 years. The main downside is that you won’t get the lovely cutgrass smell and the same biodiversity as a real grass lawn. Some maintenance is also required. It needs to be swept and watered occasionally.You may get algae and moss growing on the grass and bird poo stains, but they should be easy to remove with hot water and household detergent. SO, SHOULDYOU FAKE IT OR NOT? If you’re fed up with your lawn looking like a mud bath, artificial turf will probably sound hugely appealing.They suit gardens that get a lot of wear and tear all year around. If you have a soggy garden and want real turf or can’t afford artificial grass, it is possible to improve drainage if you put down the right top soil, according to lawn turf specialists. The installation of artificial grass is the key to its longevity. If it isn’t laid properly, it could look ropey quite quickly. Synthetic turf specialists are unlikely to offer a guarantee on their product if they have not laid it themselves, so it may be worth paying for the installation costs if you don’t feel confident about doing it yourself. It sounds obvious but real grass can’t be laid on anything but soil as it is a living thing so it is not ideal for roof terraces, flat roofs or patio gardens
