the hate media have been quietly invading our turf dear latte leftie i m writing to you out of concern over the occupation not the occupation of martin place by noble anticapitalist activists all of them no doubt inner westies but the occupation of the inner west by the hate media s right-wing attack dogs in a recent punch article that gen y imre salusinszky joe hildebrand revealed he was moving it is the time of year when pumpkins drastically outsell all other vegetables when the normally sartorially sound find it acceptable to leave home draped in little more than an old white bedsheet and when children are allowed to break the rules and accept lollies from strangers halloween is almost upon us and with that we see our nation creep closer towards what was once dismissed as `american commercialism over the last few years there has been a dramatic surge in the commemoration of halloween with its origins buried among ideas of celebrating the end of the northern hemisphere summer to remembering the spirits of those who have passed on halloween has retained its dense imagery of death evil and the afterlife while many of us may pay ritualistic homage to this day each year for some inner west residents encounters with `the other side are a daily occurrence whether welcomed or not our local area has played host to a myriad of inexplicable events confronting crimes and freakish experiences one such residence steeped in a chilling history is the abbey on johnston street annandale commonly known amongst locals as one of `the witches houses the abbey has become one of the most recognisable and notorious properties in the inner west it stands proud on one of annandale s highest vantage points almost as if it were acutely aware of its brilliance for anyone who has wandered past the sheer size of the foreboding brick wall is enough to raise hackles let alone the many stories of what is rumoured to have happened inside the abbey s fate seems to have been sealed upon her creation it was built by john young freemason and mayor of annandale in 1881 to impress his estranged inner west haunts still despairing over him she walks around the home in a state of confusion and aguish as a healer caterina deals with the mysterious haunting and ghostly experiences that most of us associate only with halloween all year round one of her more notable brushes with the afterlife was focused on helping a balmain man clear his home of a stubborn spirit the man requested caterina clear the space after it was haunted by a certain presence she discovered the intruder was the previous owner who had died of a heart attack and was too afraid to leave the physical world i went to the home and comforted him until he felt calm enough to look into the light and cross over she explains caterina describes herself as a `conduit able to build the link between the different realms her abilities are used only for the purpose of seeking positive outcomes for her clients a chance at creating peace and serenity both for those who have passed and those who are still very much a part of the physical world she is quietly critical of the increasing misuse of and misunderstanding surrounding psychic healing she s concerned that it is an unregulated profession there are no laws or regulations governing what a medium can or cannot disclose to their clients nor are there qualifications which can help people to judge between healers caterina is often faced with the burden of correcting the readings of amateurs who have left their clients with inaccurate or disturbing readings ixxxxxxxxx i went to the home and comforted him until he felt calm enough to look into the light and cross over caterina ligato psychic healer growing up in a haunted house former inner west resident sue hesse shares her experience of growing up in a haunted house the house is in edna street leichhardt it s is no longer in the family but we owned it for more than sixty years it s a small old weatherboard cottage with a cobblestone path and gate the story was that a man who committed suicide in one of the bedrooms haunted the house he was always referred to as mr hunt we were told that he hung himself with the light cord in one of the bedrooms i m led to believe that my family was always aware of the presence my aunty purchased it from my grandmother s sister around 1950 they always told stories of how you would hear footsteps up the side passage and then the gate latch would rattle open and close my mum still talks of the experiences one night she was so convinced that the footsteps and the noise of the gate opening were my dad visiting after he had finished work that she ran to meet him but he wasn t there often the back door that led directly on to the kitchen would open on its own my aunty and uncle always talked about it and just accepted the fact that they shared their house with a ghost they weren t scared and lived in harmony with the man s spirit i think there are too many amateurs who are claiming to be psychics i believe this is something you are born with caterina ligato psychic healer i think there are too many amateurs who are claiming to be psychics i believe this is something you are born with i was always guided by my gift to help and strengthen people to walk their true path without fear says caterina the witching season is upon us but for some inner west residents ghosts are part of their everyday reality all year round writes rachel borthwick what about those amongst us who truly feel a connection with the afterlife should intuitive gut feelings be discounted because they may not have been present since birth not necessarily says caterina who believes that practising meditation and nurturing perception can be important in understanding ourselves i believe everyone has intuition and it always good to listen to your inner voice finally i can t help but invite caterina s opinion on the rebirth of channel seven s the one the show is centered on the idea of finding australia s most gifted psychic by assigning a wide variety of weekly tasks revealing that she has had endless phone calls from the show s producers requesting that she be a contestant caterina refuses to subscribe to the franchise and use her gifts for entertainment i feel my gifts are a privilege and i must respect them always at the end of my day i like to thank god for all my blessings and go home to the family that i love whether you are a believer or sceptic that s a philosophy that we can all draw inspiration from happy halloween n main photo one of annandale s famous witches houses this one probably wasn t haunted inset photo but the nearby abbey was wife eleanor however the couple never lived in the property with eleanor passing away in england in 1885 while young remarried and lived in nearby kentville the late dr geoffrey davis was the owner of the abbey for more than 50 years and documented the mansions eerie qualities to woman s day magazine in 1967 he recounted frequently hearing the sound of the front door opening and someone climbing the stairs upon investigation however there was never anyone there it has also been well documented that the abbey s many residents and visitors have seen a lady in white over the decades a former resident perhaps or a visitor drawn into the home s vortex determined to live there forever in spirit i have seen that there is the spirit of a woman who was held captive and abused and murdered by her husband says psychic healer caterina ligato caterina is an expert on the spiritual realm who has nurtured her gifts since the age of three she believes that building a house shrouded in so much negativity was never john young s intention it s very sad really she [the community life o ut and about soapbox got a local issue you want to get off your chest email 450 words to info@ciaomagazine.com.au marrickville s ancient treasure as the 150th anniversary of marrickville council approaches we take a look back at the place that has been at the centre of its politics for the last 150 years marrickville town hall wasn t always where it stands today before the current town hall ever existed the original town hall stood at 96-106 illawarra rd it was built by local architect and brick maker john michael despointes whose name probably sounds familiar to those living on despointes street in marrickville today following the formation of marrickville council on november 5th 1861 the one-storey hall was erected in 1879 it was the fourth oldest town hall in sydney and though marrickville council had already been established for 18 years this building became the council s headquarters for the following 40 plus years says richard blair member of the marrickville heritage society a second storey was added in 1883 but when the `new marrickville town hall was officially opened on marrickville road in 1922 it became the second largest town hall in sydney and the old town hall was sold to the department of education since then it has passed to the jessie street national women s library the department of housing and now the greek atlas league of nsw an organisation that has restored the building as a physical record of marrickville s early village history the old town hall is considered by some to be one of the most important former public buildings in the local government area is our light rail stuffed in sydney even our good ideas are poisoned by politics every city i visited while away overseas recently had either built or were expanding their metro and light rail networks even battered and bruised northern britain put sydney to shame and has anyone been on new delhi s incredible new metro alas poor sydney while i was away our disappointing donothing new government canned the greenway then told us a paltry 5.7km light rail extension on existing tracks would take errr at least until 2014 god help us but there s a sad unspoken truth here one that goes to the heart of our failure that route was the wrong place to start a light rail rollout despite the alleged clamour in reality political noise there was no quantifiable consumer demand there now no one even dares claim there was the former government s own viability report discovered that the company operating the light rail already knew it west of the fish markets the trams run empty though happy enough to have their private monopoly cemented it has always been primarily interested in the more profitable cbd the original marrickville town hall 1870 the old town hall became absorbed into marrickville public school and continued as part of that school for well over 60 years many current and past residents of marrickville attended that school and recall it with affection says richard it has also been the site of a scandalous mystery richard recounts that in october 1990 the two lions that had graced the steps of the building for over 100 years were stolen and have never been found it was a cause celebre at the time attracting newspaper articles and letters to the editor whilst official letters of complaint were written to the then owner the department of housing the premier of nsw and the heritage council he says to celebrate all this rich history and the cultural significance of the first marrickville town hall the council s library and history department will be holding a free concert for locals at the venue itself on friday 4th november the marrickville symphony orchestra originally established in 1930 and recently reformed will perform on the night and there will be a poster exhibition tracing the 150-year history of the marrickville area on display so if you find yourself in the mood for a party come along and celebrate a little piece of inner west history and if you spot a couple of lions heads around be sure to let the authorities know n nancy merlo back in the 90s it was even cold about going past pyrmont in the end they were gifted the line to lilyfield as a consolation earlier plans for a cbd line met stiff nimby resistance from city retailers and vested interests and were abandoned years later the same bullshit politics were replayed over the cbd metro and the greenway it s going nowhere why shop when you can swap swapping is the new shopping for socially responsible inner westies so home gardeners take note the watershed will be hosting two urban harvest food swaps at marrickville festival and newtown festival and everyone s invited from 11am to 5pm on sunday 23rd october at the marrickville festival gardeners can come along and exchange their home-grown fruit vegies herbs and seedlings with other growers in the area community and home gardeners urban farmers and growers are all invited to bring their surplus harvest along and trade it in taking advantage of this great opportunity to share produce cooking and growing tips the second swap will be held from 10am to 12pm at the newtown festival on sunday 13th november and the same deal applies gardeners can swap a bunch of rosemary for a few lemons or trade that extra spinach for some seedlings this way they can not only diversify the backyard crop but also celebrate locally grown food said mayor of marrickville councillor morris hanna n for more information call 9519 6366 in 2007 the coalition went to the election promising a major expansion of light rail debnam proposed a line down parramatta rd to strathfield and many more routes to them privately run light rail was an opportunity to break free from railcorp and what they saw as the tyranny of transport unions o farrell shows no interest in any such reform even less in light rail and anyway the light rail company which doesn t release patronage figures has an uncomfortable little secret the herald revealed it this month while that mysterious lobbying was going on usage had been falling the line was too expensive and indirect importantly density is not high enough in the drawing area at least not ominous drum roll yet the extension was rushed through by labor under part 3a for stupid political reasons which didn t even work for them the new government now has to subsidize a non-profitable service plus convince a reluctant private operator to finance its construction and buy new rolling stock hence the delay negotiations have stalled because nobody wants to take a bath sydney is crap at transport planning our chances of a metro were trashed our hopes for light rail have been bungled we now know this 1 if the extension ever opens the operators will immediately require a huge bailout or face insolvency 2 this will be the last light rail line this city ever sees what s on compiled by nancy merlo email info@ciaomagazine.com.au saturday 22nd
