wine read the label on a bottle of premium wine and if it s from the barossa you know it s going to be good with a rich grape growing and winemaking history dating back to 1842 and its profound and unique silesian german influence the barossa is australia s most famous wine region no other wine region in australia can boast such a strong heritage based on some of the greatest winemaking names in the country and a rich storehouse of century-old vines and historic wineries today it has 700 grape growing families many sixth generation and about 170 wine companies with more than 75 cellar doors including such household names as seppelt yalumba jacob s creek penfolds and peter lehmann as well as smaller brands such as henschke rockford st hallett and grant burge dedicated wine lovers will also want to seek out the increasing number of boutique wineries producing astonishingly good and interesting wines although many are without cellar doors these boutique producers often open their doors by appointment while it is the german speaking silesian migrants that are most often associated with the barossa s beginnings it was an english pioneer joseph gilbert who is thought to have planted the first vines at pewsey vale in 1842 later johann gramp and his son gustav laid the foundations of orlando in 1847 at rowland flat while englishman william jacob who gave his name to jacob s creek planted vines there in the early 1850s silesian migrant joseph seppelt was another pioneer who arrived in the barossa in 1852 where he established seppeltsfield pioneer english landowners also played a major role at the angaston end of the region with samuel smith planting his first vines in 1849 and calling his property yalumba while william salter bought land at angaston in 1844 and planted his mamre brook vineyard starting saltram estate a century later the barossa would welcome a new breed of winemaker in 1961 for example kaiser stuhl sponsored the barossa that is the wine regions of the barossa valley and eden valley combined is remarkably versatile in terms of the range of grapes it can grow and wine styles it can successfully produce why do we make so many different types of wine the doyen of barossa winemakers peter lehmann once asked rhetorically because we can he answered anyone who knows peter lehmann knows he wasn t joking the barossa s shiraz grenache cabernet sauvignon and semillon rank among the best in australia while the riesling and chardonnay from its cooler more elevated vineyards have produced some of the barossa s most prestigious wines the twists and turns of the barossa disappear into a series of rolling hills and transverse valleys which charm and delight the first time visitor in consequence site slope and aspect all vary widely the barossa produces wines that are soft well rounded and full of varietal flavour the flagship wine is rich concentrated shiraz and the barossa boosts some of the oldest shiraz vines in the world it is one of the wines that define the barossa experience grenache fruit from dry-grown vines has become highly prized and is the second most widely planted grape variety the soils and the climate of the barossa produce ripe richly flavoured cabernet while the cabernet from neighbouring cool climate eden valley is more elegant and austere the barossa has had a long-term love affair with semillon its main white variety there are also substantial plantings of riesling and chardonnay the cool climate of the eden valley barossa ranges produces subtler more complex flavours with eden valley riesling recognised as an australian classic and then there are the barossa s fortified wines sometimes described as `liquid sunshine the barossa is especially famous for its sweet fortified reds and whites muscats and tokays don t miss the fortified wine tour at seppeltsfield winery and check out more fortified wines at numerous cellar doors around the region with all those cellar doors to choose from visitors will find it useful to plan their visit to the barossa in advance there are several options the most relaxing way is to let someone else do the driving there are a number of excellent tours available in which highly experienced guides will chauffeur you from cellar door to door another option is to focus on a specific area of the region such as seppeltsfield road with its 16 wineries seppeltsfieldroad.com or perhaps to look at the small but distinguished group of wineries on krondorf road including rockford st hallett tips for getting your wine home safely wine doesn t really enjoy travelling and visitors wanting to purchase wine from cellar doors are encouraged to take note of a few points to ensure the wine arrives home in the same condition as when you sampled it if you are carrying wine in vehicles remember to treat it as you would children or pets don t leave it in the car on a warm day stories abound of corks spontaneously popping bottles leaking or corks moving and so allowing air in which causes rapid oxidization many wineries can send your wine home using specialist wine transport services which can be arranged at the time of purchase once home safely bottles should be left unopened for a few days to recover from travel induced `bottle shock cellar door staff can provide further advice regarding wine transport and storage a young german winemaker wolfgang blass to come to australia working under contract for leo buring he created sparkling rhinegold reinforcing the success of orlando s barossa pearl and laying the foundations for the modern wolf blass winery the constant process of regeneration in the barossa brought another wave of star winemakers including robert o callaghan rockford charlie melton charles melton wines dave powell torbreck and rolf binder and now there s a new legion of young winemakers christian canute rusden peter schell spinifex kym teusner teusner gill and ben radford radford tim o callaghan diggers bluff
