2 news local friday october 21 2011 the inner city weekender an association with 061icd1200 maybe i m a bit harsh but i don t really feel sorry for the australian boy currently locked up in bali on drugs charges i certainly think it s an awful situation to be stuck in but i have absolutely no doubt that as naive as some teenagers are they all know drugs are illegal don t get me wrong the balinese justice system is far too harsh but just like you follow rugby rules when you play that game you must abide by indonesian laws when you are in their country however i don t think it would hurt for australia to toughen up its justice system a bit last week i read about someone appealing against their sentence for killing someone they d received four years jail but claimed that was too severe what maybe it s time to reconsider a `three strikes and you re in policy send a message that if you are going to consistently flout the law you will pay a serious price many bleeding hearts will probably argue that no study has ever officially shown that mandatory detention has decreased crime rates but i am yet to hear about it increasing crime rates either i sincerely hope that the young australian boy in bali does return to our shores as soon as possible but really if he isn t so fortunate there must be an element of well what did you expect we all know about schapelle and the bali nine it is hard to say we haven t been warned about what happens when drug laws in indonesia are tested people just need to become more accountable for their actions you do the crime you do the government s refusal to guarantee their wages and conditions beyond the next 12 months according to marrickville mp carmel tebbutt the public sector employment and management amendment bill 2011 was passed in the legislative assembly of nsw parliament last wednesday ms tebbutt said the legislation could see tafe teachers across nsw including dozens in marrickville suffer major cuts to their wages and conditions th is is a bill that will affect about 10,000 tafe teachers across t nsw but also 7,000 tafe support staff such as librarians gardeners and tech storepersons she said the o farrell government is refusing to guarantee entitlements beyond the next 12 months th is means tafe staff have awoken to great uncertainty over their future salary leave loading and overtime and penalty rates in parliament last week ms tebbutt asked the minister for education adrian piccoli to guarantee that no tafe employee would have their salary or conditions of employment reduced as a result of his proposed changes but mr piccoli said the question was stupid because the marrickville mp had not done her research he referred to ms tebbutt s media release in which she said the legislation was would leave workers at the mercy of a dog-eatdog industrial relations system she is referring to fair work australia who established fair work australia it was kevin rudd julia gillard and anthony albanese mr piccoli told parliament i said yesterday perhaps the member was not listening that core provisions with respect to salaries and working conditions will be rolled over into new agreements so there is nothing to fear ms tebbutt said the legislation was already causing great alarm in marrickville judging by the influx of communication she had received from residents tafe colleges are already struggling to recruit and retain qualified staff so in the end it will be the students who lose out as teachers exit the system she said the minister for education adrian piccoli must guarantee no tafe employee will have their employment conditions reduced and that tafe will remain a highquality accessible provider of vocational education and training in nsw news in brief marrickville police the inner city weekender friday october 21 2011 lifestyle susan garrad 9 staying healthy keeping fit q i have a strong family history of breast cancer i have a mammogram regularly but i d like to know if there is anything i can do to prevent developing the disease yes there is more and more it is becoming clear that some breast cancer risk factors are modifiable by behaviors that we can control with our daily choices the latest research on this topic points to the power of diet for beating this common disease the research found that carotenoids naturally-occurring nutrients found in brightly colored vegetables and fruit are believed to have cancer-preventive properties these are the nutrients that give vegetables and fruit their bright orange green red and yellow pigments the researchers found that among premenopausal women those who ate a diet rich in these foods had an almost 20 per cent lower risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer and among women who smoked the protective effect of carotenoids against breast cancer was even stronger the following tips will get you on your way to improved health and lower breast cancer risk · the women with the lowest breast cancer risk ate two or more servings of carotenoid-rich fruit and vegetables per day aim for this number at a minimum and more is better · you can fi nd plenty of beta-carotene in the following foods carrots sweet potato spinach kale pumpkin cabbage cantaloupe broccoli peppers apricots peas beans green leafy vegetables plums raspberries and corn · don t rely on dietary supplements for your carotene fi x studies show that only food provides benefit and that for some people such as smokers carotene supplements can do more harm than good if you would like help reducing your breast cancer risk book an appointment with susan at women s health naturally on 9798 9322 david stein it seems the `picking a trainer topic has got a bit of interest thanks to everyone for the emails i enjoy receiving them all except to musclesmustafa74 sorry i don t do home visits or glute massage anymore but an interesting question i did receive was is there such a thing as a bad client what if a client feels they re just to far out of shape and embarrassed to get a trainer and a lot of people feel this way if you re sick do you wait until you re better before you go to the doctor what about quickly changing your oil before you take the car in for a service we don t want the mechanic seeing how dirty our old oil is starting your training journey is daunting it s very hard for an overweight unfit person to walk into a gym or see a trainer the fi rst time i don t just mean hard to get up the steps but the willpower to stick to the decision and go right outside their comfort zone it makes people feel quite vulnerable the trainer is most likely quite fit and healthy themselves so people think trainers must be looking at their new client judging them or quietly saying how could you let yourself go this much and be so lazy it s funny but somewhere it s assumed everybody knows how to keep fit and anyone who doesn t is just lazy we all own a body so must know how to look after it th is isn t true i train people to become trainers and i know how much is involved in making someone good at it to assume everybody should just know how to do it is ridiculous i can say from experience having completed my trade straight after i left school a carpenter learns a lot before he earns his papers but then they can take an old house and turn it into something much better a trainer is in the trade of getting people fit the `product they make is fit healthy people any trainer worth more than $1.50 an hour knows how people feel when coming in the fi rst time they are professionals assessing where a new client is and where they want to be and then designing a way to get them there they re not thinking you re fat and i m not they have chosen to follow a career path that revolves around helping others improve their results too it is a service industry skill level as a trainer is judged by what they can do for a client it s entirely normal to feel a little trepidation starting out but give it a while see if that turns into excitement as you start feeling and seeing all the great results from your efforts david stein has worked in the fitness industry for over 18 years training and advising
