school hours 7:45 am 8:00 am 8:15 am children who are having breakfast or have arrived to school early go directly to the cafeteria children go to their classrooms classes begin a tardy tone lets you know it is time students arriving after 8:15 should report to the office for a tardy slip before going to their classroom 2:55 pm 3:00 pm bus students are dismissed walkers are dismissed please be aware that students will not have access to the building or be supervised before 7:45 a.m they will be allowed only in the cafeteria from 7:45 ­ 8:00 a.m dropping off and picking up your child before the school day the main door to the school will be the only door unlocked by 7:30 in the morning the earliest that a child can arrive to school without a specific appointment with a teacher is 7:45 when the door nearest the cafeteria will also be unlocked the cafeteria is the space that is open to students at that time where they can have breakfast and/or wait for the 8:00 bell the school officially opens at 8:00 when we will have staff members at the main front door the door nearest the cafeteria and the back door to the primary wing ready to welcome your child the door to the grades 5/6 hallway or d wing will not be unlocked or used as an entrance should you choose to escort your child to his/her classroom you may do so as long as it is your intention to stay in the building for just those few minutes you are also welcome to wait in the cafeteria with your child between 7:45 and 8:00 without signing in 7

after the school day the only door that will remain unlocked during the school day and after school is the main front door at the end of the day we will have staff members stationed again at the main front door the door nearest the cafeteria and the back door to the primary wing they will open those doors when the bus riders are dismissed at 2:55 you may meet your child at their classroom at that time if you choose without having to sign in please recognize our efforts to reduce the number of adults waiting for their children in the hallways while classes are trying to end their day some students are coming back from another learning space and are often intimidated or distracted by all of the grown-ups and toddlers that they have to get through to access their classroom teachers are trying to give end of the day directions and the office is trying to make important announcements that need to be heard thank you for helping us to make the smoothest transitions possible for your children and to keep them safe the door to the cafeteria will be open for bask parents also main office hours are from 7:15 a.m ­ 3:30 p.m end of day plans occasionally plans must change and if you need to pick your child up early from school please call the office to change their after school plan please make every effort to confirm after school plans with your child before they leave home in the morning too many last minute changes and phone calls to the office can be very tricky in a school with 300 children we will work to keep interruptions to a minimum and ensure that we know where your child is at all times absences from school school attendance is taken very seriously at bes when a child misses school he/she misses valuable learning time with his/her peers while we recognize that some absences are unavoidable we hope that our community will embrace instilling a sense of responsibility and commitment in our students that school is important if your child is going to be absent please call 453-3227 and let us know if it is not during school hours you may leave a message at 453-3227 ext.350 if your child is absent and we have not heard from you we will give you a call this helps both home and school be sure that children are where we think they are when the absence is unexpected as when your child wakes up ill please call us in the morning so that we know s/he will be absent that day when your child exhibits these symptoms it may be wise to keep him/her home from school temperature of over 100 degrees sore throat or enlarged glands ear ache stomach ache or diarrhea head lice live new skin rash feeling achy all over/flu symptoms 8

if you know in advance that your child will be absent e.g for a family trip please let us know as early as possible when your child returns to school we will do everything we can to share missed information with the students and thank you in advance for your additional support as per school board policy we will contact you if your child has missed several days of school to discuss any concerns our truancy officer this year is officer kevin gibbs parental requests for staying in from recess or physical education requests from parents to keep children indoors and inactive during recess or physical education classes will be handled in the following manner when children return to school from an illness they are usually able to resume full participation in all school activities under special circumstances parents may submit a written request to limit a child s activities for one day this will allow time for the parent/guardian to consult a doctor regarding a condition that may limit participation for continued limited participation in some activities please get a written statement from the family doctor school closing or delayed opening school closings and delayed opening staff and students are notified via the alertnow system when school is closed the determination to close school is made by the superintendent you can also get this information from the following radio/tv stations 95xxx ­ 95.5 fm wjoy ­ 1230 am wkol ­ 105fm wdev ­ 550 am/96.1 fm wezf ­ 92.9 wcax channel 3 cbs wizn ­ 106.7 fm wncs ­ 104.7 woko ­ 98.9 wptz channel 5 nbc wvmt ­ 620 am office personnel and custodians will attempt to get to school to take care of any children who arrive at school because their parents are unaware that school has been cancelled the head custodian will place a sign in front of the school building designating that school is closed the administrative assistant will record the closing on the phone for incoming calls and the school technician will note the closing on the school website 9

emergency closing/unplanned early dismissal in the event school is recessed prior to the regular closing time each classroom teacher will ask his/her students if they have a place to go where adult supervision exists if a student is uncertain he/she will be given an opportunity to use the school telephone if there is confusion on the child s part as to where he/she is to go he/she will be kept at school under supervision of the school transportation to and from school riding the bus students will be assigned to a specific bus and picked up and dropped off at designated stops it is important to be at the bus stop on time school busses will stop at all scheduled stops please be sure your child is waiting at the stop 5 minutes before the scheduled time just as we do busses sometimes arrive at their destination a little earlier or later than planned if you want your child to be dropped off at other than the usual spot please send a note to the office for an adult s signature the child will have to give this signed note to the bus driver in order to be dropped off at the new location bristol middle and high school students who want to ride the bus to and from mauhs may board/exit the first available bus at the elementary school safety rules for bus riders the driver of the bus is the person immediately responsible for the safety and welfare of the students while boarding riding or departing from the bus the opportunity for bus transportation is a privilege requiring good conduct and courtesy from all students our school wide expectations and the safety guidelines below should guide student behavior 10

bristol elementary school bus expectations we respect ourselves others and our school at bristol elementary school bus watch for your stop walk to the bus keep your body safe use quiet voice stay in your seat hold your backpack on your lap sit appropriately feet on floor take care of bus save food and candy for home respect ourselves respect others respect our school/bus students who cause a problem on the bus will be referred to the planning room and disciplinary actions may follow any student who engages in behaviors that create safety hazards while waiting for the bus or while on the bus will be denied bus privileges if you would like the complete bes board of directors policy on student transportation discipline please contact the school administration safety rules for bike scooter and skateboard riders and walkers students are welcome to ride bicycles skateboards or scooters to school to keep all people and property safe they need to follow these rules do not ride bikes scooters or skateboards in the street or on the sidewalk in front of the school from 7:55 to 8:15 and 2:55 to 3:10 walk your vehicle past the bus loading zone at these times park bicycles in the racks located in front of the school cross streets at designated crossings an adult crossing guard is employed by the school district to help provide a safe street crossing at intersections of north spring and pleasant streets crossing guards are on duty from 7:50 am to 8:10 am and 3:00 pm to 3:15 pm 11

school breakfast and lunch breakfast and lunch are available to all students students may bring a bag lunch to school or may participate in the school lunch program if a student wants breakfast at school it is served between 7:45 am and 8:15 am your child may be eligible for free lunch eligibility forms are sent home in the first day packet if you have not received one and think you should please call the office full price for students reduced price for students adult price breakfast $1.25 breakfast free breakfast $1.50 lunch $2.00 lunch .40 lunch $4.50 milk only .40 snacks in school students are encouraged to bring healthy snacks to school learning is hard work and nutrient-dense snacks help children throughout their day the best snacks are low in fat salt and added sugars good snack ideas include hard boiled eggs low sugar/low fat muffins high protein ants on a log celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins fresh fruit and cheese and whole grain crackers pets at school while we love animals we do not encourage students to bring pets to school only the teacher can determine if the presence of a particular animal is relevant to the unit being studied if yes students may bring a pet to school under the following conditions no students in the class are allergic to fur hair etc the teacher has given written permission to the parent/guardian after a determination about relevance and safety including allergies is established with administration a date and time for the visit has been established in advance an adult must bring the animal to school remain with the animal throughout the visit and be responsible for the animal s behavior the animal owner must provide evidence that the pet is current with all required immunization pets may not be transported on school buses please be sure children wash hands after touching any pet 12

student attire student clothing should be comfortable safe and appropriate for the work of active learning it should support our commitment to being a safe orderly and respectful school clothing that is revealing or promotes the use of alcohol tobacco or other drugs or promotes sexism racism profanity or violence is not appropriate for school hats may be worn in all areas of school including the hallways gym and lunchroom as long as adults can see the children s faces and eyes students may wear hats in their classroom if that is consistent with their classroom rules hats may not be worn during the pledge of allegiance when the warm weather settles in we want students to be cool comfortable and covered shorts as long as they are not too short are fine sleeveless shirts are fine clothing that exposes stomachs and/or undergarments should not be worn if children are not appropriately dressed for school we will give parents a call and ask them to bring a change for them home/school communication children learn best when home and school communicate openly and frequently teachers are encouraged to communicate with parents by note telephone e-mail conference or casual conversation in turn we hope that parents will do the same if you call during class time your call will most likely be put through to the teacher s voicemail this minimizes classroom interruptions teachers check their voicemail regularly and will return your call if you have information that must get to the teacher right away we will of course make sure that happens occasionally children at school need to contact a parent or guardian and they are welcome to use the school phones with permission we would encourage afterschool activities or play dates be arranged the night before or the morning of please do not let your child bring a cell phone to school they can be distracting 13

homework guidelines the bes homework guidelines are based on our school vision the most recent research on the social emotional and academic impact of homework on children and families the developmental characteristics of students at each grade level input from parents and the pros and cons of homework generated by students and staff the purpose of homework is to promote high quality learning and the desire to keep learning homework should foster the connection between home and school by engaging the family in their child s learning success with homework helps build confident learners general k ­ 6 guidelines homework should stimulate creative and analytical thinking it should be purposeful engaging and achievable for all.assignments may be different for different children as determined by the child s needs whether assignments require family participation or are best completed independently students should have all the knowledge skills and materials they need to be successful students will be taught how to do homework including how to trouble shoot if they get stuck students and parents need to understand the homework expectations and each of their roles homework content will not be graded grade level teams have common expectations for homework within a logical k ­ 6 progression examples of grade level expectations kindergarten reading with a parent/family member occasional family projects 1st through 4th reading every night students can choose the genre and amount of time spent reading both independent and shared reading is encouraged if other homework assignments are added theme and writing related projects including responses to text should involve an element of student choice math ­ games skill sheets if students truly can complete them independently and need the practice to build fluency homework completion may be tracked 14

5th and 6th students are responsible for organizing and completing homework for keeping and using their student planners for budgeting time effectively especially for long term projects identifying and collecting needed materials and having them where they need them when they need them homework completion is tracked independent reading every night mix of teacher assigned and student choice when other homework assignments are added math ­ skills/games that students can complete independently and for which they need the practice to build fluency theme and writing related projects will involve an element of student choice homework and families some suggestions for parents one purpose of homework is to foster the connection between home and school by engaging the family in their child s learning your interest in your child s day at school and any work they may be doing at home reinforces and extends their learning and thinking it is also a great motivator for continued learning one of the most important things you can do is to simply ask your child about their day at school some conversation starters are tell me about the most interesting or the hardest or the weirdest or the funniest thing you learned or did or thought about in school today what would you like to learn more about what was your favorite morning meeting greeting would you teach me how to do it another way you can help your child be a curious and confident learner is to encourage and support positive homework habits here are some suggestions help your child develop routines around reading and doing other homework by establishing a usual time and a quiet place for doing homework support your child in doing the work but don t do it for him/her talk with your child about what they are reading or writing ask questions that help your child clarify summarize or extend what they have learned in school or at home children need some basic supplies to do their homework these include pencils crayons scissors glue paper erasers and dictionary if you need help finding any of these supplies please contact your child s teacher to keep supplies handy you might try keeping them in a shoe box basket or plastic container 15
