a life-long passion for the fast growing sport of reining has led shauna larcombe from competing in country victoria to living in the centre of europe and training horses professionally he sunburnt country of south-eastern australia is almost as far from the verdant valleys around lake geneva in switzerland as one can get but these days a 360-degree view of french and swiss alps rather than the wide brown land is what aussie reining rider shauna larcombe calls home for the long-time competitor turned professional trainer it s a good place to be in october 2009 shauna rode rs fondadores olena to victory in the 4-star reining competition at equita lyon in france her very first fei reining event another 4-star win will qualify her for the 2010 alltech world equestrian games where she hopes to represent australia the equita lyon included reining for the first time last year and it proved so popular that next year classes will be moved to a larger stadium the only western discipline recognised by the fei reining is huge in europe and the us and its popularity is growing in australia the inclusion of this demanding and exciting sport in the world equestrian games is a sign of its growing popularity several-times dressage champion anky van grunsven aspires to compete in both disciplines at the alltech games in kentucky french showjumper michel robert five times french national jumping champion and olympic medallist is also greatly interested in reining and the technical training of american reining horses there are currently three european 4-star reining events in italy germany and france with italy traditionally the strongest nation originating from the manoeuvres required of a working american cow horse the sport of reining demands ultimate control from both horse and rider the horse is required to show obedience agility and speed whilst performing a set pattern or test that must include full-gallop circles multiple-circle spins and spectacular sliding halts the principles required of balance impulsion and collection are very similar to dressage only they must be achieved totally without rein contact because there are a limited number of set patterns the horse can anticipate so the trainer/rider must exercise great self-control when riding lest thoughts lead to body signals mix up the training and not over-train a high level of trust and cooperation between horse and rider are required and precision is vitally important with points lost for mistakes and poor style but gained for accuracy and expression it can be a noisy exhibition as competition crowds are encouraged to show their appreciation of each display with whistles and cheers following in the footsteps of brother martin a record-making 4-times winner of the italian futurity shauna s personal success is also bringing accolades to the prestigious cs ranch just out of geneva where she works as head trainer although she would have one believe she got there by luck shauna s journey to the other side of the world is a perfect story-in-progress of being true to oneself and following a dream of talent and hard work of sacrifice and good fortune shauna was born in alford sa and the family lived around adelaide before moving out to gawler when she was a teenager the larcombe s were deeply involved in quarter horses specialising in reining and all five children rode with three going on to be highly competitive and two shauna and older brother martin developing international careers from the time she started working shauna saved money and travelled to the states at around two yearly intervals to gain as much training as possible with various reining horse trainers particularly steve schwartzenberger in colorado in 1993 parents bob and margaret moved their family to the goulburn valley in victoria so the children could be closer to the bigger nsw and victorian shows not long after disaster struck in the form of illness shauna lost her mother after a brief battle with cancer then two years later her father was diagnosed although she still rode and competed locally shauna put her life on hold to care for her father during an illness lasting six years in 2004 after a year of missing her parents and wondering how to get her life back on track she flew to italy to stay with her brother martin,

as a distraction continued martin was competing with great success and working at mario erbetta s cisal quarter horse stud near lake maggiore in northern italy and shauna worked there too mostly ridng two-year-olds when he was offered a position with corinna schumacher of cs ranch shauna became a part of the package as his assistant trainer though martin committed to only two years as the family was planning to return to australia they continued working out of cisal while cs ranch in switzerland was being developed and when martin and his family left shauna took over as head trainer in late 2005 horses and staff moved to the cs ranch on the outskirts of geneva switzerland though all breeds are accepted in reining quarter horses are the traditional breed so these and qh-crosses from good reining lines are being imported from the states shauna s favourites are the palomino mare flossy that competes as miss stepping gun the buckskin stallion sparkin tinsel most likely to be shown this year by corinna and the talented stallion rs fondadores olena on whom shauna won the french title all three horses will become part of cs ranch s breeding program operating at another property and currently producing four or five foals each year last december shauna put off the usual stopover to australia following her annual visit to the us to look at horses and check out the scene and instead opted to return to switzerland to prepare for the 2010 nrha european futurity in kreuth germany the european futurity is the biggest competition between european countries and is this year expected to attract between 300 to 400 horses cs ranch is a state-of-the-art training complex lovingly designed and developed by corinna schumacher who prefers real horsepower to the formula-1 cars driven by husband michael specialising in the western discipline of reining it s a pristine equestrian property surrounded by breathtaking snowcovered mountains and overlooking a serene blue lake encrusted by ancient vineyards and fairytale villages where the rich and famous come to live if this is `the top it s a wonderful place to be executed in typical swiss style with tasteful simplicity excellence in design and materials and great attention to detail and practicality like many equestrian properties in europe cs ranch is also stylishly and artistically beautiful with bronze horses frolicking on the lawn just inside the timber and black iron gates and a magnificent bronze horse and rider modelled on a photo of martin larcombe wrought in a classic reining `slide while no expense has been spared the ranch is understated and welcoming a supremely practical establishment run with quiet precision by a small band of dedicated staff there are 26 boxes in the spacious hall which includes a huge lounge area for staff and meetings where trophies are proudly on display and a host of tack storage and facility rooms the comfortable boxes are lined with rubber and fitted with the new mattress-type flooring which remains drier and reduces the need for shavings the fittings constructed from robust and safe metal fixtures include spin-out buckets for easy feeding even during a cold and snowy winter during daytime the horses are put outside into paddocks whenever possible adjacent to the stables are the `light boxes which provide simulated daylight to the horses coats and the luxurious ruku box or purpose built horse-sauna resembling a large crate outside and a wood panelled horsebox inside heat lamps along the walls and roof apply warmth to the horses muscles prior to work continued above the lounge area of the barn displays trophies and welcomes visitors and clients.

great attention is paid to the horses fitness soundness and wellbeing as shauna says it is very important to treat your horse like an elite athlete especially at the level of competition we do here in europe we are constantly checking our horses with our orthopaedic veterinarian from italy even if i don t `feel anything wrong with the horse we are also very careful about fitness and will make sure our horses are physically fit and adequately warmed up before we attempt stops or spins the facilities are well set-out in a compact area leaving room for paddocks day-yards and some hay-growing on the approximately 20-acre property land at such a premium is never wasted outside too everything is serene and orderly with a lush manure heap gently steaming in the chilly air to be recycled into the garden and broad neatly swept concrete walkways connecting the main buildings other buildings include a cosy cedar office shauna s small but attractive manager s house and the cedar round-yard and horse walker the horses learn to walk at liberty on the sand surface within the partitions of the horse walker thus gaining valuable exercise above the outdoor arena turns to ice in winter left the 90 x 50 cedar ménage arena seats more than 1,400 people and is flooded with plenty of natural light there are plans for a new outdoor arena to replace the old small arena which will become a second stable block the new barn will incorporate bigger boxes conference facilities and purpose-built farrier and wash stations behind the stable block is the spectacular cedar indoor ménage the 90x50m arena which seats more than 1,400 people is flooded with natural light the timber blends with the beautifully-groomed sand like yellow surface especially imported from germany which gives the building a warm and inviting feel even in mid-winter shauna works up to eight horses a day in here for an average one-hour workout it s very important that the ground you re riding on has a good solid smooth base with approximately 4-5 inches of sand on top if the ground is not good you could create problems first you may do damage to your horse physically if he s a horse that really tries to stop and then gets stuck secondly he could be hurt mentally if he tries to stop and gets hurt he may not want to try again they have to have confidence in you it really is a good feeling when you get a horse that loves to stop with the sliding stops you need a horse that has the inbuilt desire to want to stop and to use his haunches when doing so this mostly comes back to bloodlines but the best horses are the freaks that just want to do it shauna says we start with the young horses by teaching them what the word `whoa means it s mainly repetition and the ones with ability pick it up very quickly this is started at the walk and trot graduating up to the canter once the stop response is solid and the horse is getting `broker by which i mean we can control his body from head to tail then we start to add speed by this time the horse will be shod with special slider plates on the hind feet these are flat shoes with a little longer trailer at the back to aid in the sliding when preparing for a competition shauna will work on stops about three times in a week and if the horse is good it s more about just making sure he s listening to the command `when i arrive at a show i make sure the horse gets adjusted to the different ground by asking him to stop from a slower pace before asking him to gallop and stop more often than not the ground at the shows will be `slicker than what we have at cs ranch so i need to make sure the horses don t get scared by asking them to stop from a fast speed and perhaps losing their footing or slipping generally they adapt pretty quickly and i think they actually think above it s easy when we go to shows this is one reason why we have shauna s very swiss cottage is surrounded by the first the heavier ground at home so then they don t usually have a of the seasons snow problem when we show continued

because of its central location in europe cs ranch is ideally placed for international competitions and is the venue for the 2010 and 2011 nrha european reining championships as well as the annual cs classic or european reining affiliate championships with her home-ground advantage shauna larcombe is ideally-placed for continued success in europe though this is a pressure in itself as a highly experienced competitor she s aware that hard work and good fortune aren t guarantees there are too many variables and much keen competition it requires good horses a cool head and plenty of stamina to cope with the multiple stresses of living away from home combined with the responsibilities of training someone else s horses and top level competition she misses family and friends and the smell of the australian bush shauna doesn t know what the future holds but if and when she returns to australia she will bring with her a level of professionalism she believes can only be gained in europe she regrets that it s so much harder to make a living with horses in australia but while she s enjoying being where she is the opportunities to earn learn and gain experience are worth any sacrifices back home many australian reining enthusiasts are cheering her on left with a little bit of home shauna and her pup wombat an australian shepherd of course article reprinted with permission by the author wendy elks and publisher hoofbeats magazine articles covering all aspects of horses and horse care training riding and veterinary subjects are covered in the hoofbeats magazine available from all good newsagencies more information and article lists can be found on their website www.hoofbeats.com.au gary browne `topfield acres owner carolyn williams vrha club show 01/05/2010

gary browne reining clinic by glenda tjepkema nd on sunday 2 may 2010 the vrha held a gary browne clinic at werribee park they also held a show on the saturday at which i competed for the first time nine riders including myself attended the clinic having ridden at one of gary s clinics before i was looking forward to learning new techniques and reinforcing those i had already been taught also hoping to learn to remember all of the pattern and how to count we started at 9am practising methods of warming up and making our horses more flexible before stopping about noon for a lovely lunch provided by the vrha with the assistance of jacky ragg and sandy dodds after lunch we progressed to faster work and lead changes gary is a very good teacher clearly explaining each move and patiently working with the newer members of this exciting sport we had some very green horses and some more experienced and riders who were from various levels i m sure all of the participants that attended including those sitting on the fence benefited greatly john wicks reining clinic by david norbury i had the pleasure of attending a clinic given by john wicks the day after the recent vrha show at werribee park on the 2nd may 2010 i ve not attended one of john s clinics before and must say i really enjoyed it we started off as all clinics do with exercises and how when performed correctly become manoeuvres i was pleased to see how much emphasis john put on the exercises as i think people think we do them only to warm a horse up and this is so far from the truth john went on to explain how certain manoeuvres such as spins become circles reinbacks become stops and lope departures become lead changes in the spin we want the horse to hold the same shape as he would if he was sliding and the lope departure requires the same shape as the horse would need to perform a lead change we were all given a chance to display our horse s good and bad points to john and he spent as much time as necessary to help every rider through their problems i mentioned to john that i don t think i have ever seen him miss a lead change on a horse and when he explained his programme for this manoeuvre you could see why he has so much success with it that s not to say his other manoeuvres are any less impressive it was rewarding for me as well as the other riders at the clinic to be instructed by one of the country s top reining horse trainers who has won the reining australia futurity twice and has won over $100,000 in prize money.
