pleuropneumonia by virginia leighton-jackson travel sickness is a silent killer which most vets see on a weekly basis but the call is often too late travel sickness why have i never heard of this before it is not as if this is a new disease it is simply not widely known and that is why it is a killer horses get off the float looking healthy but within the next 48 hours they embark on a fight for their lives travel sickness is a bacterial infection of the lower respiratory tract and lungs of horses that have travelled long distances either by road or by air it is known as pleuropneumonia and fortunately is not contagious but that is the only thing going for it the condition can be fatal in as little as three to five days if left untreated the condition spreads to both lungs and out into the chest cavity causal factors the most common forms of travel stress are directly related to the float or truck that is transporting your horse loud noise inadequate suspension poor ventilation cramped conditions high-speed driving short rest stops during long distance travel and trailer swaying make for an uncomfortable ride but the largest contributing factor is tying your horse too short tying a horse s head up high might seem like a good way to stop it from injuring itself in the float but this can cause severe damage a horse in its normal state will spend most of its time with its head down this makes it easier for it to breathe and allows naturally-occurring secretions to drain themselves from the lungs this is also one of the reasons horses sneeze when they are perfectly healthy when the head is tied up the secretions flow backwards and build up within the lungs often resulting in a potentially lethal bacterial infection cross tying is even worse for the horse as it completely removes the horse s ability to move its head and neck from the central upright position research shows that it takes two days for a horse to recover from travelling cross tied where as horses that are travelled loose only need one day to rest if they are healthy to add insult to injury dust inhaled from the road carbon monoxide poisoning from poorly ventilated trucks and stale hay containing dust mites germs and moulds can overload an already infection-infested system also fumes such as carbon monoxide from exhaust and ammonia from urine which can build up within the float may cause a toxic reaction within the system horses transported by air are also at risk of developing travel sickness horses that are air freighted are usually housed in the rear of the plane the area in which airborne contaminants are most likely to build up in air stables the breast bar often restricts the movement of the neck preventing the horse from lowering its head this combination of factors is alarming but fear not grooms who travel with your horse on planes are trained to recognise and alert the on-board vet to the signs of travel sickness in most cases your horse can be treated to prevent the illness from progressing into fullblown pleuropneumonia symptoms signs of pleuropneumonia present within 48 hours of travelling initially your horse will seem depressed lethargic go off its feed and develop a low-grade fever then it starts to pant respiration becomes shallow rapid and laboured these early signs of travel sickness can often be confused with colic but as the illness progresses the symptoms become more definitive dehydration starts to become apparent as coughing fits and nasal discharge plagues your horse many horse owners adopt the `wait-and-see attitude to a seemingly mild ailment after travelling it is crucial to watch your horse for at least three days if there is any sign of any illness or discomfort a vet should be called immediately stress to the vet that your horse has travelled and let them know how long your horse was in the float and if there were any rest stops travel sickness is a serious illness that can be treated quickly and painlessly if it is caught early problems only occur if it is underestimated or ignored continued

treatment suspected pleuropneumonia is treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics to try and fight off the infection this is usually continued for up to three weeks to ensure that the horse has initially recovered from the disease after treatment relapse is common in horses in the race industry that go back to work as soon as the antibiotics are finished horses should be rested for several weeks after the treatment and should not be put back into hard work for several months to prevent a recurrence of the disease it is also recommended that a mare that has been infected with pleuropneumonia should not be bred for at least three months in the early stages of pleuropneumonia antibiotics on their own are effective in stopping this disease in its tracks as the disease progresses fluid starts building up in the lungs and chest cavity these fluids cannot be naturally removed so your vet may recommend draining them with a catheter placed into the area surrounding the lungs if the disease goes untreated until the final stages draining is essential to relieve the pressure on the lungs and heart preventing heartbreak the australian dpi has compiled a list of tips to avoid travel sickness ensure adequate ventilation and avoid exhaust fume contamination of float or truck allow the horse to lower the head during transport regular breaks every six to eight hours on long trips where it is practical and safe to do so avoid dusty feed during transport soak hay if necessary monitor your horse s appetite demeanour and temperature for several days after prolonged transport if there is any sign of illness such as diarrhoea nasal discharge coughing fever loss of appetite founder or colic veterinary assistance should be sought other preventative measures are fairly commonsense but are often overlooked make sure your horse is completely healthy before allowing to travel one sick horse on a float or truck spells misery for all the others and is at a higher risk of acquiring pleuropneumonia try using stallion dividers to prevent horses squabbling or injuring themselves during transport always ensure horses are cooled down and given a drink before long distance travel this guards against dehydration during rest stops give horses small amounts of water and check for overheating do not put a horse straight onto a float if it has been working or if it has been pacing due to stress allow it to rest and calm down for at least twenty minutes so it does not become nervous when it is first loaded do not over-rug your horse a lighter rug than usually necessary for the temperature should be used to avoid overheating due to travel stress provide dampened feed or pellets to reduce dust and airborne contamination lightly dampened hay in particular by wrapping a biscuit of hay in a wet chaff bag for 2-4 hours to reduce dust and other airborne contamination this will increase palatability of hay and provide additional moisture during long trips locate feeders below chest bar height avoid transporting horses suffering from any respiratory diseases they may pass them on to other horses or the condition may worsen during travel ensure the float is in good condition and level on the towbar drive steadily and smoothly keep the back flap down to reduce intake of swirling dust on dirt roads if a horse has competed or raced hard give it a day off after a long trip turning the horse into a grassy green paddock to graze with its head down for a few hours or putting dampened feed in a bin at ground level will encourage drainage of the respiratory system try not to travel horses over long distances in hot or humid conditions this provides the ideal breeding ground for bacteria travel sickness can be devastating once it gets hold on your horse when you send your horse off on a float or transport truck be aware check out the float or truck that your horse will be travelling in ask the driver questions and make sure he knows the signs of travel sickness too remember travel sickness is 100 treatable if you are 100 aware if you aren t it may end up being 100 fatal avoid travelling mares in the later stages of pregnancy if they are travelled it should be done so with extreme care and caution they should not be travelled with younger horses stallions or mares that have recently aborted to avoid contracting viral infections which could lead to late term abortion stop for rest breaks every two hours and take every measure to prevent travel stress.

by julie quinn the vrha held a reining clinic with rob lawson at the machiavelli quarter horses indoor arena winchelsea on the th th weekend of the 29 30 may 2010 we started on saturday morning at 10am with 10 riders and after the general introductions we went straight to doing basic exercises guiding our horses by their noses on small circles visualising drawing a circle on the ground rob likes to refer to these as `mr squiggles circles then we incorporated lateral flexion and some hind quarter control before we moved on to our next exercise before lunch large fast circles and speed control the facilities at machiavelli quarter horses are amazing and on behalf of all clinic participants i must say thank you to owner barry mcvilly and staff for providing a wonderful lunch for your good company and for allowing us to hire the indoor arena and stables and for the `ned kelly refreshments thanks also to sandy dods and debbie barratt for the sweets after lunch we worked on shoulder control rob gave us each individual time walking up and down the length of the arena showing us how he wanted only our horses shoulders to move off the centreline this was quite a challenge at the start this exercise was then repeated with the horses hips as well it was then time to start our turnarounds spins we each took turns with rob spiralling into a turnaround it was informative for us to watch the seasoned show horses spins improve after just a few minor adjustments after this we retired for the day sunday morning started at 9am with the warm up based on more small circles shoulder control and some large fast circles a revision of the previous days riding our aim today was to work on lead changes and how to set your horse up for a lead change so onto the large counter bend circles rob was very clear in his training as to why a lead change fails when the horses shoulders get in the way and he explained that the approach to the centre of the circle was crucial for starting to move those shoulders i was generally a few strides late however overall i was happy with my attempts before we finished for the day rob was very generous patient and clear with his instructions which made it easy to follow and understand how reining manoeuvres come together our mixed group of seasoned reining riders and horses to beginners like myself all gained more knowledge from this clinic i hope in the future that the vrha hold more clinics such as this one to give everyone the opportunity to attend and access reining trainers and their teaching methods that they may not usually be able to thank you again to all who had a helping hand in making this clinic possible i m looking forward to the next one already happy reining julie.
