president s message ­ i was fortunate enough to attend the reining australia nationals at tamworth last month and must congratulate all riders on the standard of performance but especially those members of the vrha i won t try to name them all but fifteen of our members competed and all runs i saw were a credit to the riders without singling out any particular rider or run it must be said that cameron halliwell s run that won the inaugural `michelle halliwell memorial open non pro event was the second highest score of the show and an absolute crowd pleaser and i am sure michelle must have been smiling down on cameron when she saw him do that run on her beloved palomino mare the standard of the vrha competitors is improving constantly and i feel sure we will see many more of our members with blue ribbons at future state and national shows we are fast heading towards the end of the year and our attention is now drawing towards the annual awards night and the agm which is to be held on the weekend of our november show this year we have operated with a very small committee of only five people and a youth representative the workload is such that more people could be utilised for the benefit of our sport if you believe you have something to offer and can spare some time to participate in the organisation of events and administration of the vrha your input would be appreciated by all members if you are not able to attend committee meetings but still feel you could have an input it would still be most welcome and a tremendous support to the next committee our buckle series is drawing to a close with only two more shows until the awards are won this series has been an absolute drawcard for competitors and no doubt the competition between now and november will be hotter than ever so to all buckle series entrants get your horses ready for a final dash to become the winner in what has been to date a most exciting competition i look forward to seeing you all at our next show committee 2009/10 president peter tjepkema 0418 321 289 vice president gary browne 0418 997 025 secretary treasurer wendy o sullivan 0419 139 066 assistant treasurer kristy hobson general committee paul barratt 0418 534 544 sandy dods newsletter peter tjepkema vrha president from the office ­ hi members it s been a quiet time for some and a busy time of year for others throughout winter members travelling to tamworth to compete at the reining australia nationals in august saw some extremely keen and enthusiastic reiners representing victoria i travelled to tamworth to assist ra secretary barry humphries in the reining australia show office and after six days in the office and approximately 12-13 hours a day in there saw about four runs the whole time i was at the show i must say was somewhat an experience i would like to make mention the work that barry undertakes as ra secretary is one of excellence before during and after the show not to mention the responsibilities he has in the office throughout the year my support to barry was a small recognition of the help he has given the vrha throughout my term as vrha secretary and during the process of affiliation with nrha a big thank you to barry from the vrha i would also like to thank sandy dods for her support in the background at the show taking all those great photos and keeping everyone up to date with results on the vrha facebook page it was hard to keep her out of the office but a quick about face and she was gone i needed her out at the show doing other jobs for us it was great to have the opportunity in tamworth for me to meet others and put names to faces and to spend so much valuable time with a laptop for the remainder of the year we have two club shows coming up including buckle series classes and these shows will finalise the buckle series and vrha hi points for the year the next show is in october and then november look out for details in the newsletter website and facebook we also have a clinic agm and hi point awards night in november so busy times ahead we are on the lookout for donations for a raffle we will be running at the november show so please let a committee member know if you have something you can donate or bring along to place in the wheelbarrow at the show kindest regards 0400 424 298 youth representative katelyn barratt memberships 2010 membership forms are available to download from the website www.vrha.com.au alternatively contact the secretary to obtain a copy your membership will assist and support reining in victoria welcome to the following new vrha member stacy kellie wendy o sullivan vrha secretary

annual general meeting of the victorian reining horse association saturday 27th november 2010 at werribee park national equestrian centre commences in the indoor arena at 7pm followed by the annual hi point award dinner presentation commences at the conclusion of the agm dinner reservation forms and further information will be available soon long-stem vs short-stem forages nutritionists recommend horses consume at least one to two pounds 1kg of long-stem forage each day long-stem forage is best defined as hay or pasture this recommendation respects the natural desire of horses to graze as horses are hardwired to spend more than half of their day eating forage products that include extremely short pieces of fibre such as cubes pellets or chaff are often fed in lieu of long-stem forage a spate of inquiries regarding the necessity of long-stem forage has landed in the electronic mailboxes of kentucky equine research ker nutritionists the overwhelming inquiry can short-stem forage products completely satisfy a horse s forage requirement according to kathleen crandell ph.d a ker nutritionist the answer is yes but there is a caveat if a horse does not have enough forage to chew on to fill the time it might develop abnormal behaviours such as cribbing weaving manure-eating and mane and tail chewing most horses without access to long-stem forage seek chewing satisfaction through destruction of wooden surfaces within reach said crandell hay pellets and cubes are typically made from good-quality forage and they can therefore help satisfy a horse s nutritional requirements this is especially true if lucerne products are used for horses with elevated nutrient needs such as youngsters or those exercised frequently on the flip side the quality of chaff or chopped forage is less reliable high quality chaff originates from hay not straw though chaff made from straw is popular in some regions of the world straw offers few nutrients to horses and it is high in indigestible fibre which increases the risk of impaction colic therefore straw chaff should be fed in small amounts primarily as a way to slow consumption of a grain meal and should not be used as the sole forage chaffs made from high-quality hay however can be the principal forage source in sum horses can survive without long-stem forage in their diets provided the forage requirement is met at least 1-1.5 of body weight per day through alternative forages to maximise chew time though it is best to give horses some long-stem forage daily long-stem forage such as hay and pasture keeps horses content by satisfying their need to eat for much of the day article by kentucky equine research ker
