from the secretaryfirstly i would like to thank the non-committee volunteers who helped out at the state championship show to interstate competitor graham cooper for spending 3 days prior to the start of the show on the tractor preparing the arena surface which was the best it has looked for a long time on the gate shane bettess julie nichol and astrud seletto scribes for the two days of showing raechelle salvalaggio and ciro casa thanks also to astrud and julie for organising morning tea for the judges on the friday and to garry o sullivan a very non-horsey husband for dragging the arena all day on the saturday i would also like to thank sandy dods for all her admin work before during and after the show sandy has been a great help to me with the vrha office and since the state show has resigned from the committee i for one will miss her support on the committee and at our shows and the newsletters rd the may show coming up will be the 3 caq continental affiliate qualifier for the vrha and gvrha this show will include the caq classes together with the gvrha slide to america series vrha buckle series vrha hi point classes and vrha entry level classes one big line up of classes to fit into one show day get your entries in before the closing date and take advantage of the prepaid discount entry fees and also to assist the office to get the show organised an additional reason to support early entries is that i will be for the first time utilising a computer software program designed for reining shows which will take a bit of time getting familiar with but hopefully in the long run it will assist with running shows and cut down on time for the office this program is used by other affiliate clubs and i believe it works well for them this will also be an advantage to new committee members in being able to continue running shows in the same format without having to reinvent the wheel every time by the time this newsletter goes out q11 will be over on behalf of the vrha we hope everyone who travelled to tamworth to compete in the reining classes are home safe and had many successes the vrha will be running a clinic at the machiavelli quarter horses complex at winchelsea at the end of may thanks to john woods for offering to donate his time for the weekend to kick start a number of clinics we will be holding at barry mcvilly s property these clinics are to support barry s sponsorship to the vrha barry is a keen supporter of reining and we look forward to presenting barry with his trophy buckle for the $5,000 gold sponsorship he made to the state championship show the clinic is now booked out but i am in the process of organising another date due to the enquiry demand the vrha hope to run more varied reining clinics for all levels from the winchelsea facility so keep an eye on the calendar of events for more information recently i organised framed photographs of the class champions from the state show and sent them to all class naming rights sponsors as an appreciation gesture from the vrha for their sponsorship towards the show thanks to steven tjepkema the official show photographer for designing the photo with the sponsor and class name i must admit they looked great and i am confident the sponsors will be pleased appreciation certificates have also been sent to the trophy buckle sponsors and other sponsors of the show thank you once again to all the sponsors and the club members for donating goods and supporting the club and the show lastly funds raised from the entries of the michelle halliwell memorial ladies class at the state championship show came to a total amount of $300 a cheque has been forwarded to the cancer council victoria thank you to competitors for supporting this event again this year i must also make mention of the delicious state show smorgasbord dinner held on the saturday night 56 in all attended and all had a great feed please contact the office should you have any suggestions for the club for clinics venues or if you wish to help out at shows or on the committee we would appreciate your help in anyway particularly on show days we will be looking for scribes gate marshals vrha state championship show 25th 26th february 2011 werribee park national equestrian centre was once again host to the annual victorian reining horse association s state championship show held on the 25th 26th february 2011 this show was once again a highlight of the vrha calendar of events not only for competitors wanting to take home the prestige of championship titles but for a significant event to reining in victoria this show was momentous as the vrha celebrate its 20th year anniversary of the club since becoming incorporated in 1991 over the past 20 years the club has seen many members come and go and still has existing members from the founding of the club back in 1991 the club has been through its share of highs and lows has seen many members taking on committee roles in the pursuit of keeping the club together all for working towards the club s mission as a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion and support of reining in victoria the club has also seen its fair share of trials and troubles with the change of nrha australia to nrha america affiliation but here today 2011 and 20 years later the club is continuing to see growth in reining the dedicated and hard work that has been done over the years and continues to be done by volunteer committee members volunteers helping out at shows and behind the scenes to keep the club going sponsors and last but not least the competitors and their reining horses getting out whether for a hobby or business the vrha thank you for your support over the past 20 years competitors travelled from far and wide to show in pursuit of the seventeen maryanne powell trails end trophy buckles and a slice of the prize money throughout the two day program competitors were also contending the first round of qualifying for the nrha continental affiliate championships to be held in tamworth during august this year at the reining australia national show and also the gvrha ride slide to america series under the watchful eyes of judges don mclaughlin and cherise mclaughlin from queensland some of australia s future reining champions showed what they are made of in the vrha futurity classes graham cooper on a very handsome chestnut gelding rufolena took home champion in the macobri farm open futurity while rene hoefchen riding op sovereign whizz won the blue dog non pro futurity whizkey on the rocks showed he was a horse to be reckoned with taking out the machiavelli quarter horses non pro derby owned and ridden by rene hoefchen with a total score from the judges of 141.5 another feature class of the show saw keiran moses with a score of 136.5 winning the pryde s easifeed open aboard little gambel lena the open freestyle reining was entertaining to say the least with competitors demonstrating the skill and athleticism of their reining horse adding creativity and individuality to their chosen music the devil went down to georgia was the winning composition performed by vrha youth member alexandra barratt riding toccoa something lethal this was one of many championship successes had by the barratt family over the two days bethany barratt and toccoa something lethal winning the michelle halliwell memorial ladies and the rookie level 2 classes katelyn barratt riding ruf cut winning the youth 14-18 years class with alexandra barratt also winning the younger youth section and taking home the champion youth 13 years under trophy buckle the vrha youth program have made an exceptional effort over the past year fundraising for the youth trophy buckles and are really showing us how it s all done with young max conder being awarded the 2011 vrha youth encouragement award for his efforts showing a classy dark chestnut gelding by the name of jessies cutter beau another highlight of the show saw a different kind of run in pattern on saturday evening prior to the major event of the show vrha member khristie martin had everyone standing as she entered the arena on her horse tamkaura promise of glory microphone in one hand australian flag in the other singing the national anthem khris had everyone gobsmacked at her hidden talent 150 runs were judged over the two days weather was good to us and all in all a great few days of reining for competitors families and friends spectators and visitors to werribee park the vrha committee would like to thank the valued sponsors of the show and supporters of this annual event and also to the competitors who travelled to werribee to compete wendy o sullivan vrha secretary/treasurer
