ea1 21 ee e the academic program at driscoll school is structured to meet the changing needs of children as they develop critical thinking and creative problem solving are emphasized at all grade levels in an effort to stimulate a child s intellectual curiosity and ability to acquire the skills needed to live in the 21st century the use of technology is integrated across disciplines to enhance learning our primary objectives are to challenge each child to extend his/her thinking and knowledge and to enable young students to become increasingly confident as learners throughout the grade levels classroom teachers collaborate with resource specialists classroom assistants and aides full year interns student teachers and parent volunteers to enrich the academic program for all children our participation in the intern programs through various high quality teaching preparation programs through schools like wheelock and simmons provide dynamic university involvement in our school ;e1 n 21 u1 classes in grades k-5 are self-contained with one classroom teacher depending on the needs of students and collaboration between grade level teams some flexible grouping across classrooms may occur for some aspects of instruction or for special learning experiences in our 1st and 2nd grade classrooms children remain together with the same teacher for both years this provides stability and an opportunity for teachers to get to know children well at the end of the 1st grade children may change classes if the teacher or parents believe that another group would be more suitable a final decision about this type of change will be made by the principal in grades 6 7 and 8 students are assigned to a homeroom where they check in each morning at 8:00 a.m they then rotate to various classes throughout the day according to an assigned schedule which they will receive on the first day of school depending on the needs of students and the teaching methodology some flexible grouping across homerooms may occur for some aspects of instruction or for special learning experiences ;e1 be1;ana classroom placement takes place in may and june in a series of meetings held with classroom teachers the guidance counselor student services staff the vice principal and the principal the goal of this process is to create balanced and equitable classes that provide an optimal learning environment for both the individual child and the group of children as a whole we also strive to create groupings that make it possible to provide the most effective student services our placement process includes an opportunity for parents to provide information or share unusual circumstances that they feel are important or which they believe we may not know all information must be submitted in writing to the principal by mid-april to be considered as part of the process[close]

submitting information is completely optional the same consideration and care will be given to every child during the placement process whether or not parent communication is received requests for specific teachers either in conversation or in writing will not be considered as part of this process each year teachers ask students to list some friends on friend cards these cards are not shared with other families or students but help us understand some of the relationships between students while our preference is always an overall placement with a well-chosen teacher and group of students the friend cards are a consideration in the placement process final decisions on class placement are made by the principal ;c cecn 8 n1 the curriculum at driscoll school is based on the learning expectations for the public schools of brookline there are four sets of learning expectations grades k-2 grades 3 4 grades 5 6 and grades 7 8 these expectations are benchmarks by grade level indicating what every child should know understand and be able to do by the end of each year along with the brookline student reading list these publications build a strong bridge between home and school and ensure that everyone has the same information about teaching and learning expectations teachers will provide an overview of the curriculum at the fall open house grade level curriculum overviews and more detailed learning expectations are available on the public schools of brookline s website at www.brookline.k12.ma.us 1 a na student achievement is assessed in multiple ways the strongest indicator of school achievement is academic performance and production teachers use both formal and informal class screenings the state of massachusetts assesses all children in grades 3-8 on the mcas massachusetts curriculum assessment each spring for complete information about the mcas and to see released test items go to the massachusetts department of education website at http www.doe.mass.edu/mcas :a e>2kb 2@1n1 a2@1 the goal of the technology program is to integrate technology into the curriculum across all grade levels and to provide the necessary technology resources experiences and support for both students and teachers to develop technological skills in an everchanging digital world students and teachers have access to technology throughout the whole day computers are located in every classroom in the library and in the computer lab there are also mobile computer carts in the school students receive a more formal computer class in grades six and seven students cover various topics including an internet safety unit in conjunction with the brookline police department[close]

e=d@1@k1 na 1 a a the driscoll library has an extensive collection of print resources videos and audio books as well as a bank of computers connected to the internet for educational use these resources are designed to provide students with opportunities to read and appreciate literature as well as to research information and become skillful users of information all students and staff use the library students visit the library for regular library classes and are also welcome to come before school or after school during posted hours students in 3rd grade and younger must be accompanied by an adult when visiting the library outside school hours the library catalog is online and is accessible in classrooms and at home through the driscoll webpage the online catalog also provides access to electronic resources and reference materials staffing for the library includes a full-time library media specialist and parent volunteers both parents and students are welcome to use the facilities and borrow materials children are responsible for taking care of the materials they borrow and are asked to pay for any materials damaged or lost parents can support the library in a variety of ways parent volunteers are essential to the library program parents can volunteer to help shelve books on a regular basis work processing books or volunteer for special projects such as preparing for the writing festival or author visits parents may choose to support the susan lewis cooper children s authors fund this fund was created in memory of susan lewis cooper a parent and library volunteer and supports school visits by authors and storytellers finally the library is happy to take book donations of new or gently used books for the library collection and classroom libraries nc a!c;1 at driscoll school students are provided with quality opportunities to experience music and develop an understanding and appreciation of a variety of musical genres and skills through active participation in singing playing instruments listening moving analyzing and composing students initiate a meaningful relationship with music that they take from the classroom and continue to develop throughout the rest of their lives students in grades k-6 participate in general and vocal music students in grades 7 and 8 develop composition skills and study various musical genres in more depth band string and choral programs are available for students in grades 4-8 after school programs include town-wide band town-wide orchestra and town-wide chorus all 8th grade students participate in the 8th grade musical in the spring fos1 c cecn the k-8 visual arts curriculum teaches students to develop skills in both two and three -dimensional mediums students learn to express their individual ideas as they experience a variety of artistic materials and concepts which are integrated into other areas of academic studies the overall goal of the curriculum is to inspire confidence in[close]

!1=eke=8a1 ee e c 1 a1@ek n 1e 1k school hours for k-8 8:00 a.m to 2:20 p.m instruction begins promptly at 8am instructional hours for early education classrooms vary please check with early education teachers for more information there are 8 early dismissal days at 12:30 for parent conferences 4 in november/december and 4 in march/april please refer to the district calendar for exact dates and applicable grade levels this calendar can be found at http www.brookline.k12.ma.us in addition there are usually 3 early dismissal days at 12:00 the wednesday before thanksgiving the day before december break and the last day of school lunch is served on 12:30 dismissal days lunch is not served on 12:00 dismissal days d@a1f81 7 1;f7ec breakfast and lunch are available for purchase healthy meals are prepared at the school breakfast is served in the cafeteria beginning at 7:30 a.m in order to promote good health and nutrition all students are expected to eat lunch refrigeration and microwave access are not an option for students students should not bring glass bottles or soda students have an opportunity for morning snack time in their classroom healthy snacks are encouraged and should be provided by families driscoll school maintains a no nut policy in all classrooms we appreciate that no nut snacks be sent to the classrooms for snack time nut products are allowed in the cafeteria only nut free tables are available in the cafeteria for students who do not consume nut products at lunch please review with your children that sharing of food is discouraged mainly as a precaution to prevent the spreading of germs as well as preventing life threatening allergic reactions students in k-6th grades have 30 minutes to eat lunch and 20 minutes for recess either directly before or after they eat 7th and 8th grade students have a 30-minute break period which includes their lunchtime @a;a unless the weather is significantly bad all students will be expected to participate in outdoor recess and should dress appropriately we will generally send appropriately dressed students out in light rain or snow to allow them time to run around and get fresh air if indoor recess is required indoor activities will be available students up to 7th[close]
