www.friendsofglendavisravine.ca my toronto includes streetcars and croquet here are many things i like about toronto and my list most definitely includes the streetcar there is a westbound stop across from where i and the wife reside and it can get mighty chilly on a cold winter morning while waiting for the vehicle to arrive then just when all seems lost the noble prow of the 501 crests the hill at the queen and lee intersection and suddenly all seems right with the world non cents i see by the papers that a montreal store is refusing to have anything to do with the one cent coin store management refuses to give out the humble coin in change and will not accept them when they are offered in payment in my opinion this is discrimination in its crassest form and it should be vigorously stamped out by authorities and i will tell you why familiar old phrases such as a penny for your thoughts will disappear from popular use because it won t mean anything to a generation that will grow up in a penniless society and here s another thing in my lifetime i have worked with many women with the first name penny and without exception they have all been intelligent and very attractive but getting back to the penny for your thoughts argument what will re t place it a nickel for your notions doesn t have the same ring to it there is a very real chance that if the anti-penny forces succeed in getting rid of the unassuming coin i believe they will turn their dark attentions to getting rid of the five cent piece and eventually the eradication of coins altogether and what kind of a world will that leave us the merry jingle of coins in one s possession will be replaced with the dour rustle of paper money and to me this does not represent an improvement in our lives stick up for croquet speaking of improvements in our lives i and the wife were delighted with the resounding success of the first annual gardeners cottage croquet tournament which was held recently on the pristine playing grounds in kew gardens lawyer don snider an avid croqeteer was a great help when it came to explaining the rules of the game and other niceties and it is our hope that the game will become an important part of the sporting events in the beach it was part of a fundraiser organized by the local advisory board for kew cottage aka the gardener s cottage and the profits went to the continued upkeep and restoration of the gardener s cottage which has stood at the foot of leuty avenue for more than a century unfortunately i and the wife were unable to attend due to a previous commitment but reports from witnesses brought back memories of the croquet matches we used to hold at our various residences in this great part of the city they were hotly contested affairs replete with accusations of sandbagging and other deliberate attempts to throw opponents off their game but despite these allegations all of them unproven i am pleased to say the games were conducted in an atmosphere of good fellowship and keen sportsmanship there were a few flair ups to be true but at the end of the day these outbursts were forgotten and all contestants received a prize none of them worth more than $1.25 i know that sounds a little chintzy but our expenses were high because every year we had to replace croquet mallets that were broken over the heads of competitors and croquet balls that were split in half by the swings of frustrated competitors i was very pleased to learn that there were no reports of similar behavior at this year s inaugural event i am sure that pattern of behavior will be continued in the years to come when i am confident the croquet tournament will become an established part of the beach athletic scene bill maclean s 5 minutes 5 questions in the last issue we fire watch what you heat always stay in the kitchen while you re cooking bottoms up any time is bubbly time did you know in the early years of the newspaper we ran a contest called `what is it it was the brainchild of andrew blinoff who took magnified pictures of various objects readers were invited to guess what the photo was of aided by clever clues in the caption the winner would be drawn from the correct answers and would win a monetary prize it was a very popular contest and we still run it occasionally dipping into the photo archives for more information call us at what tickles your nose dances on your palate and makes magic every time you sip it that would be bubbly of course sparkling wine is made several different ways the champagne method involves a second fermentation in the same bottle in the charmat tank or cuvée close method all the same the second fermentation takes place in a large tank and the wine bottled under pressure through the transfer method the wine is actually fermented in the bottle but then transferred to a large tank to clean it up and then rebottled under pressure another method is injection or carbonation where co2 is simply pumped into a tank of still wine occasionally some light bubbly is created by stopping fermentation through chilling thus leaving some slight natural co2 in the bottle whether for toasting launching ships partying or special occasions sparkles is the wine of choice because of its exuberant character there s just something about the bubbles that entice for matching shellfish simply prepared poultry or soft young cheeses there s nothing finer in my mind one does not need a reason or excuse to open a bottle of bubbly the mere popping of the cork is celebration enough with the festive season not that long off it s never thanksgiving ing price point and the weekend weather goes thomas neal accompanying strategy this past long weekend has is a well-known and is always the most imto rank up there as one of respected local beach portant factor to considthe best we ve been given agent er in a long time it was like real estate sellers should be summertime all over beach wise wary of the practise of again really quite specputting their property tacular wasn t it and now that the last of the turkey leftovers are gone on the market at a list price that is evidently or unless you celebrate the american thanks much lower than it should be then holding giving too then you may not be carving the back on the offer presentation date with the thought that they ll achieve a better final sale big bird again for a few months our beautiful beach neighbourhood trees price through attracting multiple offers the same can be said for sellers and agents are now reaching full radiant colours and the hockey and football seasons are in full swing that believe the beach market is still feverish fall is indeed a very busy time for children s and silly and price their property much highsports and programs and now it s full-on un er than what the comparable market really calls for the strategy of delaying the offer til the christmas break the beach fall real estate market is also in process still has merit in certain price ranges full swing by now although this year there but should be exercised in a form whereby the wasn t a real traditional kickoff date like after process is more subtle in order to effectively the labour day weekend this year the beach market the property to those available buyers fall real estate market just seems to be a con whose time constraints may impede their tinuation of this year s late spring and sum availability to see the house and think about an offer mer market of course the `traditional strategy of placto date there isn t a lot of inventory throughout the scope of price ranges we have ing the home on the market at the right price in the beach but that hasn t pushed sale or slightly above with competent marketing prices that much higher as has traditionally and timely reception of offers and negotiation been the case when lack of good product and is never a bad choice so what s the right strategy this fall well a bigger pool of eager buyers snap up whatafter over 22 years of selling beach homes exever listings come along instead buyers are treading fairly softly perience has taught me that there isn t a perthese days what with the risk of dark eco fect strategy for the beach fall market rather nomic clouds that seem to hover above then it s the one that you feel most comfortable dissipate only to reappear again days or with and the strategy that fits well with your weeks later it s no wonder the beach fall real goals and needs at the time as i ve stated beestate market can t seem to gain a strong fore the beach fall market tends to flip-flop almost on a weekly basis and even more so this foothold this fall market is different from the last year depending on the economic news of the several years and especially last year when day the housing market indicators are still the bank of canada was on record as stating robust but i always think that by time the methat by the spring of 2011 interest rates would dia makes their statements on the general begin to move upwards to more normal levels real estate market the market itself has that created somewhat of a push by buyers in changed or moved on the national media the fall of 2010 to take advantage of what ap tend to be a month or so behind what s really peared to be the last of the all-time low inter happening and the beach market can easily est rates but as we know those interest rate change within that time frame it s always important for your agent to have hikes never materialized and now buyers have been given the good news that the rates a good feel for what s happening at the very won t be increasing in the short term without moment you re putting your home on the marthe threat of higher rates on the foreseeable ket your agent should be thoroughly knowlhorizon buyers instead have the luxury of sit edgeable with the current beach market conting back and waiting for that near perfect ditions and give you their opinion of each of property to pop up before making their move the available strategies presenting you with if most of the boxes on their wish list get the different concepts of each with the inherpunched they ll jump there s not the anxiety ent pros and cons make sure you know the choices because out there for buyers that has been prevalent in the last several years that if they pause too `one-size doesn t fit all this fall when the sold long or wait until the spring prices are going sign is on your front lawn you re the one that needs to feel satisfied and justified by your deto rise quickly no this fall we re seeing a steadier beach cision on a personal note i d like to give the longmarket overall with both sellers and buyers searching for the common ground i guess you time editor of bmn carole stimmell who is could call it a more `normal market but it s retiring from her position with this paper a hard to know what normal is now seeing what huge thank-you and best wishes into the futhe beach market has accomplished this last ture carole has been a terrific help and mendecade is a normal beach real estate market tor to me over the past decade that i ve writone whereby sellers are compelled to hold spending too much time in the dental chair based on scientific data they may not be alone statistics have shown that dental caries better known as tooth decay or cavities is on the rise in children aged two to five years and has been on the increase for the past two decades tooth decay is by far the most common of all the chronic childhood diseases affecting five times more canadian children than asthma while childhood tooth decay is readily treatable it does potentially lead to undesirable outcomes such as discomfort dental anxiety or phobia time lost from school and significant financial burden to families although many different risk factors have been implicated for developing tooth decay the four essential ingredients are a tooth surface decay-causing bacteria fermentable carbohydrates such as sugar and time what makes some children more prone to cavities than others are factors such as the hardness of the enamel the anatomy of the teeth and the buffering capacity of excessive exposure to fluoride is not good either and can cause fluorosis which can negatively affect the appearance of the teeth and potentially lead to other health problems optimal benefit from community water fluoridation programs has been shown to take place at one part per million in municipal water supply this has been the fluoridation level in toronto s drinking water since 1959 in spite of this media focus on the undesirable effects of excessive fluoride intake has unfortunately led to the rise of an `anti-fluoride movement bottled water in plastic bottles began to gain popularity in the 1980s in part because of widespread concern about the safety of tap water bottled water is usu ally either obtained from natural springs or produced by treating tap water with a chemical process known as reverse osmosis this process is designed to remove unwanted impurities from tap water but unfortunately it also removes most or all of the fluoride from the water dentists have long speculated that mass consumption of bottled water would lead to significant increase in the prevalence of tooth decay recently a number of studies have proven this speculation to be valid researchers in a number of centres have studied two groups of children from the same community over a period of two to three years one group drinking exclusively tap water and the other only bottled water in each community studied the group of children drinking bottled water had significantly more tooth decay the only variable the researchers could identify to distinguish the two groups was the presence or absence of fluoride in their drinking water based on these findings most dentists recommend tap water over bottled water particularly in young children parents of young children should be encouraged to carefully consider the health effects before choosing bottled water over municipal tap water piano violin cello new toddler and parent class please contact ines pagliari director
